There is no single best fitness tracker for everyone. In the 2024 market, the right choice depends first on your phone, then on whether you value smartwatch functions, workout data, sleep and recovery insights, battery life, comfort, or avoiding a subscription. Apple Watch Series 9 is the strongest all-round choice for iPhone owners; Fitbit Charge 6 is the simplest low-bulk band; Garmin Venu 3 is the battery-life leader for general fitness; Samsung Galaxy Watch7 fits Galaxy users; Oura Ring Gen3 favors sleep and recovery; WHOOP 4.0 targets training-load coaching; and Garmin Forerunner 265 is the specialist pick for runners.
These devices measure useful trends and provide alerts, estimates, and screening features. They do not replace a clinical examination or diagnose disease.

Best training-load and recovery coaching: WHOOP 4.0
WHOOP is screen-free and built around strain, recovery and sleep interpretation for athletes who want coaching rather than notifications or navigation. Its charging system is intended to let you wear it continuously.
The trade-off is fundamental: WHOOP is subscription-led, and its proprietary scores are interpretations, not medical measurements. It is a poor fit for anyone wanting a one-time purchase, live pace or a general smartwatch.
Best for serious runners: Garmin Forerunner 265
Forerunner 265 prioritizes GPS, structured workouts, training guidance and running-performance metrics. It is a better progression tool than a general-purpose band for readers whose main goal is improving running.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “health monitoring” actually means
Wearables combine direct sensor readings with algorithmic estimates and wellness scores. A heart-rate sensor records optical pulse signals; resting heart rate and HRV are calculated over selected periods; sleep stages are inferred from movement and physiological signals; calories, readiness, stress, body-battery and strain are model outputs.
- Heart rate and HRV: useful for personal trends, but optical readings can degrade during intervals, strength training, cycling, cold weather or loose contact.
- ECG: selected watches record a short, single-lead rhythm tracing. It is not a clinical 12-lead ECG.
- Sleep: duration and regularity can be useful; stages are estimates rather than direct brain-activity measurements.
- Blood oxygen and temperature: readings are sensitive to fit, motion, circulation, skin temperature, tattoos and altitude, and availability varies by market.
- GPS: built-in GPS records routes, pace and distance without a phone; connected GPS relies on the phone; rings and recovery wearables are not substitutes for a live GPS watch.
- VO₂-max and recovery scores: model-derived indicators that are best used to observe change within the same device.
- Fall, crash and sleep-apnea notifications: useful alerts or screening support, never proof that a condition is absent or present.
Consumer wearable capabilities differ materially among manufacturers, as summarized in this device review. Comfort and consistent wear can matter more than an extra sensor; selection research emphasizes matching device type and fit to the intended measurement and user population (selection considerations).
Compatibility, GPS and subscriptions
| Question | What to check |
|---|---|
| Which phone? | Apple Watch requires iPhone. Galaxy Watch’s advanced health functions may require a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone. Fitbit, Garmin, Oura and WHOOP generally support both major platforms, subject to app and operating-system requirements. |
| Do you need phone-free routes? | Choose a watch with built-in GPS for running, cycling, hiking or walking routes without carrying a phone. Connected GPS is adequate for casual outings. |
| Is a membership required? | Fitbit Premium is optional for core tracking but adds content and analysis. Oura’s membership is central to its full insight set. WHOOP requires membership. Garmin’s core platform, Apple Watch and Samsung Watch core health functions do not require a health-data subscription, though LTE, apps or coaching can add fees. |
| What about LTE? | Cellular watches need a supported carrier plan. If your phone is normally nearby, LTE may not justify its recurring cost. |
| Are features universal? | ECG, blood oxygen, hypertension-related tools and sleep-apnea functions can be restricted by country, model, software, age or phone compatibility. |
Battery and charging: the overlooked health feature
Missing nights or workouts while charging creates gaps in trends. Apple Watch generally needs daily charging; Charge 6 lasts several days to about a week; Venu 3 is designed for substantially longer endurance; Galaxy Watch7 commonly lasts a day or two; Oura lasts several days; WHOOP’s on-device charger is designed for continuous wear. Actual life changes with always-on displays, LTE, GPS, temperature, battery age and power-saving modes. Treat manufacturer maximums as mode-specific claims, not guarantees.
Accuracy, comfort and common failure modes
Fit matters: a loose or overly tight band, clothing between sensor and skin, tattoos, dense hair, cold hands, poor circulation, high-impact movement and weightlifting can all reduce signal quality. Swimming and water exposure require following the device’s rating. Charging overnight, battery-saving settings and app-sync failures can create apparent health changes that are really missing data. Firmware updates may also alter algorithms.
Use a tracker to identify patterns and decide when to seek appropriate care, not to diagnose yourself. Confirm an abnormal reading with a suitable medical test, do not change medication based only on a wearable, and seek professional help when symptoms or repeated alerts warrant it. A normal reading does not rule out disease.
Quick Recap
Three-year ownership questions
- Record the device price, membership fees, cellular plan and likely replacement bands or chargers.
- Ask whether the device remains useful without cloud synchronization or a paid tier.
- Check account export and deletion controls and which third-party apps receive health data.
- Confirm replacement-band, charger and battery-replacement availability for the exact model.
- Consider service discontinuation: a low upfront price is poor value if the insights you need depend on a service that may change.
Buying checklist
- Identify your phone and any required manufacturer app.
- Choose your primary goal: everyday activity, sleep, recovery, running or smartwatch communication.
- Decide whether you need built-in GPS or will carry your phone.
- Set a charging tolerance based on how important uninterrupted sleep data is.
- Try the form factor for overnight comfort and check water resistance for your activities.
- Price the membership, LTE and accessories over three years, not only the device.
- Check regional availability for ECG, blood oxygen and sleep-apnea features.
- Review privacy, export and account-deletion settings before syncing health data.
