There is no single best Garmin watch for everyone. Choose the Forerunner 970 if you want advanced running and triathlon tools, the fēnix 8 if outdoor navigation and broad multisport use come first, or the Forerunner 165 Series for core running features. If everyday wellness is your priority, compare the Venu 4 as well. The right choice depends on the specific features, size, and screen configuration you will use—not a universal ranking.
Which Garmin watch should you buy?
Start with the activity you care about most, then compare navigation, training tools, GPS, display, and battery estimates on the exact model. Garmin’s lineup addresses different users, from runners and multisport athletes to outdoor adventurers and general fitness users. Its watch selection guide is a useful starting point.
- Running and triathlon: Forerunner 970, if you want its premium training and navigation features.
- Outdoor navigation and multisport: fēnix 8, with the case size and display variant chosen to suit your priorities.
- Core running: Forerunner 165 Series, Garmin’s entry-level running GPS smartwatch.
- Everyday wellness and smartwatch use: include Venu 4 in your comparison.

For runners and triathletes: Forerunner 970
The Forerunner 970 is Garmin’s premium running and triathlon GPS smartwatch. Garmin’s comparisons list mapping, multiband GPS, and advanced training features, making it the clearest fit here for an athlete who will use those tools. If your running routine does not call for them, a simpler Forerunner may be a more suitable match.
Garmin gives the Forerunner 970 an estimate of up to 15 days in smartwatch mode. That is a manufacturer-published maximum, not a guarantee of everyday battery life; actual results depend on use. See Garmin’s battery guidance for the stated figure.

For multisport and outdoor navigation: fēnix 8
Garmin positions fēnix 8 as a premium multisport GPS watch. It comes in multiple sizes and with AMOLED or solar-equipped display options, so “fēnix 8 battery life” is not one interchangeable figure. Select the precise case and screen configuration before comparing estimates, and check that its mapping and activity features match your intended use.
For the 51 mm fēnix 8 AMOLED, Garmin estimates up to 29 days in smartwatch mode. For the 51 mm solar model, Garmin lists up to 48 days with solar charging. Both are Garmin’s maximum estimates, not independent measurements or guaranteed everyday results; the solar figure specifically identifies solar charging. Garmin’s battery guidance provides the manufacturer’s qualifications.

For core running features: Forerunner 165 Series
Garmin labels the Forerunner 165 Series its entry-level running GPS smartwatch. It is the simpler running-focused option in this shortlist. Garmin’s running comparison distinguishes it from higher models that add capabilities such as mapping, multiband GPS, and training readiness. Check the current variant details to see whether you need those additions; do not assume they come with every Forerunner.
For everyday wellness: Venu 4
Venu 4 is worth comparing if daily wellness and smartwatch features matter more to you than a running-first or outdoor-navigation-first design. Garmin includes it alongside Forerunner 970 and fēnix 8 in its comparison, but the cited product comparison covers the Venu 4 in 41 mm. Confirm the exact size and current feature details on Garmin’s comparison page before deciding.

Check training features and compatibility
Garmin’s August 28, 2025 announcement introduced running tolerance and Garmin Triathlon Coach training plans for select compatible smartwatches. Garmin describes the plans as adapting workouts using performance, recovery, and health metrics. Availability is device-specific: the announcement does not mean every Garmin watch supports every feature. Check Garmin’s announcement and current device compatibility information for the watch you are considering.
What to compare before choosing
- Primary activity: Decide whether the watch is chiefly for running, triathlon, outdoor navigation, multisport, or everyday wellness.
- Navigation: Confirm that the specific model has the mapping and navigation tools you want; these are not uniform across the running lineup.
- Training features: Compare the particular metrics and coaching features you expect to use, and verify device compatibility for newer software features.
- GPS: Check whether multiband GPS is listed on the exact model rather than inferring it from the Forerunner or fēnix name.
- Fit and screen: Compare case size and display type. fēnix 8 has different sizes and AMOLED or solar display variants.
- Battery estimate: Use the smartwatch-mode estimate for the exact variant, with its stated conditions. Garmin’s figures are manufacturer estimates, not independently measured results.
Current prices and the value of a particular configuration are not established by these feature comparisons. Check live listings for the exact model and variant before making a price-based decision.
