The most important addition for everyday owners is the Pebble phone app: it connects the watch to a phone, relays notifications and data, and handles app installs. The announcement is encouraging for long-term use, but it is not a promise that every component is free software or that online services and official support will last indefinitely.
What changed in Pebble’s open-source software
On November 24, 2025, Pebble founder Eric Migicovsky said the core software stack for the relaunched Pebble watches had reached 100% open source. He described the stack as PebbleOS, the mobile companion app, and developer tools and Pebble Appstore software. His announcement said the core stack—“everything you need to use your Pebble watch”—would remain open source. That is the founder’s stated commitment, not a binding support term or guarantee of service availability. Read Migicovsky’s announcement.
The “100%” description refers to the core stack, not every dependency or optional service. Migicovsky identified non-free components in PebbleOS and the app, including the PT2 heart-rate sensor and Memfault, as well as optional web services such as Wispr-Flow speech recognition. He said these are not required to compile and run the core software, and noted that other non-free components could appear in the future.
Why the January 2025 release was different
Google announced the PebbleOS source release on January 27, 2025, saying it could help volunteers maintain watches after the original company ceased operations. Google described PebbleOS features such as notifications, media controls, fitness tracking, custom apps, and watchfaces. But that release omitted proprietary chipset-support and Bluetooth-stack code. Google said the published code included its build-system files but “will not compile or link as released.” It was a meaningful source-code release, not a complete, ready-to-build watch software stack. Google’s announcement explains the original release and its limitations.

The November announcement describes a later state: Core Devices’ maintained PebbleOS, the newly published phone app, and development and distribution tools. Keeping those dates and scopes distinct matters if you are assessing whether the public software can support a watch today.
Why the companion app matters to watch owners
A Pebble watch has no independent internet connection, so the phone app is essential infrastructure rather than a convenience. Core Devices says the app maintains Bluetooth connectivity, relays notifications, synchronizes data, installs watchapps, and proxies network requests for the watch. Without a working phone-to-watch bridge, key features that depend on the phone cannot work as intended.

The public app repository’s README describes the app as open source and compatible with all Pebble watches and Pebble Index 01. It also says the public repository is a manually synced copy of an internal, actively developed repository and may lag behind it. Public source makes the app inspectable and reusable; it does not mean every current internal change appears immediately in the public copy. See the Core Devices mobile-app repository.
What open distribution means for watchfaces and apps
Migicovsky described the Pebble Appstore collection as nearly 15,000 watchfaces and watchapps developed between 2012 and July 2018. That is his description of the archive, not a fresh count of items available to download today. He credited Rebble with downloading an archive when Fitbit closed the original store and operating a service for continued downloads.

Core Devices said it was adding multiple app-store feeds to its mobile app, along with its own feed, a developer dashboard, and an Archive.org backup. At the time of the November announcement, the backup was to be completed gradually and the new feed contained only a subset of apps and faces. So the announcement did not mean that the full historical collection was already available through every route.

What this means for long-term Pebble use
Open source improves the odds that a community can inspect, adapt, and maintain software even if the original vendor changes direction. It does not by itself guarantee that a phone operating system will keep supporting an app, that a hosted feed or optional web service will remain online, that replacement parts will be available, or that Core Devices will provide support for a set number of years. Those dependencies have different owners and can change independently of the published code.
There is evidence that development continued after the open-source announcement. In a July 2026 update, Core Devices listed community contributions and software work including health sync, light-sensor improvements, notification filtering, language packs, and bug fixes. The company also reported 2,120 apps and watchfaces created for Pebble Time 2 and Pebble Round 2. These are company-reported figures and activity, not a guarantee of future features or a measure of the full current app catalog. Read Core Devices’ July 2026 update.

Questions to check before relying on a Pebble
- Phone compatibility: Confirm that the current companion app supports your phone and that the features you need work with your watch model.
- App access: Check which app-store feed or archive provides the watchfaces and watchapps you want; historical collection size does not establish current availability.
- Services: Identify whether a feature depends on a hosted service or optional proprietary component, rather than assuming open code keeps that service running.
- Hardware: Check the current model, repair options, and availability separately from software status. Core Devices lists Pebble Time 2 and Pebble Round 2 through its official store.
Open software does not settle the hardware decision
Software continuity and hardware longevity are related, but they are not the same. Migicovsky said Pebble Time 2 has a screwed back cover and replaceable battery, a hardware detail relevant to repairability. It does not establish the repairability or availability of every Pebble model. Check the official store for current models and availability rather than assuming an announcement or older listing reflects present inventory.
Core Devices’ July 2026 update also reported user concerns involving inaccurate step or sleep metrics, accelerometer issues, touchscreen problems on Pebble Time 2, high power consumption, and cracked glass. The company said it was working on fixes for some reported problems, without a stated ETA in that post. These reports are not an independent failure-rate study and should not be read as defects affecting every watch. The update also mentioned improved iOS notification replies in the EU as future work, not a feature confirmed as shipped at the time.
