These are editorial picks by role, not a market-wide ranking. Some families predate the decade, so confirm the specific reference and its production history before buying.
How to choose among 2000s Breitlings
Start with the watch’s purpose and the exact reference, rather than the collection name alone. A family’s history can explain its design, but does not establish the specifications of every watch sold under that name in 2000–2009.

- Aviation calculations: Consider a Navitimer if its rotating slide rule is the feature you want.
- Sports chronograph: Consider the Chronomat, while checking the reference to determine its actual movement.
- A family introduced in the decade: The Avenger has a documented 2001 introduction.
- Dive-watch purpose: Consider the Superocean family; verify the individual reference and its condition.
For any candidate, compare reference-confirmed case dimensions, movement and functions, water-resistance rating, dial legibility, bracelet or strap, and fit on your wrist. The available collection histories do not establish those specifications for particular 2000s watches, so do not infer them from the family name. For a used watch, condition, service evidence, and the seller’s return terms are also part of the comparison.
Shortlist: Breitling families to consider
Navitimer: the aviation-instrument choice
Breitling traces the Navitimer to a request from the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) for a pilot’s chronograph. Its rotating logarithmic slide rule was designed for calculations such as speed, distance, and fuel consumption. That history explains the family’s aviation identity, but does not verify the specifications of a particular 2000s reference. See Breitling’s Navitimer history and its heritage overview; confirm the precise watch’s reference and documentation before treating it as a decade-specific example.

Chronomat: a sports chronograph with a 2009 milestone
Breitling describes the Chronomat’s development for Italy’s Frecce Tricolori and says the model became the first Breitling to receive Manufacture Caliber 01 in 2009. This makes it a compelling late-decade candidate if you are seeking that movement milestone. It does not mean every Chronomat from the 2000s has Caliber 01: check the actual reference and movement. Read Breitling’s Chronomat history for the brand’s account.
Avenger: introduced during the decade
Breitling says the Avenger was first released in 2001, making it the clearest choice on this shortlist when a decade-introduced family matters to you. The date should not be extended to every later variant, and it does not establish the specifications of an individual watch. Check the reference against the seller’s documentation and Breitling’s Avenger history.

Superocean and Steelfish: the dive-watch branch
Breitling’s Superocean history places the family in the brand’s diving-watch lineage, but the history page does not identify a single best 2000s reference. A specialist model-history page labels the Superocean Steelfish “(2007),” a secondary-source date rather than a complete official period catalog. Treat it as a lead to verify, not a substitute for checking the exact reference and watch documentation. See Breitling’s Superocean history and the specialist Steelfish history page.

How to check a pre-owned watch before buying
- Identify the exact watch. Ask for clear photographs of the dial, case sides, caseback, clasp, and movement where appropriate. Record the reference and serial information, then compare them with the paperwork. A collection name alone is not enough to establish the model or its specifications.
- Check production-history claims. If the listing says a watch was made in a particular year or has a particular movement, ask what documentation supports that claim. Do not treat a family launch date or a model-line milestone as proof about an individual example.
- Assess condition and service evidence. Review service records and have a qualified watch professional inspect a costly example when the records or condition are unclear. For a dive watch, verify the condition of seals and the water-resistance rating rather than relying on the family’s intended use.
- Review the seller’s terms. Understand the return window and any conditions before committing. A listing’s description is not, by itself, independent verification of condition or originality.
- Use archive information for what it establishes. Breitling says an Extract from the Archives can provide historical details such as manufacture year, case material, and reference number. It is not a report on present condition. See Breitling’s archive service information.
