For current Fitbit trackers and watches, no: Windows and macOS are not the normal Bluetooth sync host. Set up and sync the device with the Google Health app on a compatible Android phone or iPhone, then use your computer to view account data or download an export. Fitbit Connect, USB dongles and direct computer syncing belong to selected older models and should be treated as legacy workflows.
What “syncing with a computer” means now
There are four separate actions that older guides often blur together:
- Device sync: the Fitbit sends new measurements to a nearby phone over Bluetooth Low Energy.
- Cloud upload: the phone sends that information over the internet to your Google Health account.
- Viewing: you open information already stored in the account through an available web dashboard or account controls.
- Exporting: you request a downloadable copy for a computer, spreadsheet or analysis program.
The current data path is:
Fitbit tracker or watch → Bluetooth Low Energy → Android phone or iPhone → internet → Google Health account → computer viewing or export. Google documents this phone-and-account workflow at its sync instructions.
A charging cable should not be assumed to transfer health data. Whether a cable carries data is model-specific, and current setup is performed in the Google Health app rather than a Windows or Mac Bluetooth panel.

What replaced the Fitbit app?
The former Fitbit app became the Google Health app beginning May 19, 2026; Google announced the rebrand on August 18, 2026. See Google’s transition notice. Anyone still using a Fitbit account had to move to a Google Account to continue using the service. Google says Fitbit-account access ended after May 19, 2026, and deletion processing for applicable unmigrated accounts began July 15, 2026 (migration details; additional terms).
Therefore, instructions that say “open the Fitbit app” may describe an older interface. Install or update Google Health and follow the labels shown on your platform.
What you need for a current Fitbit
| Requirement | Current detail |
|---|---|
| Phone | Android 11 or later, or iPhone with iOS 16.4 or later |

| App | Google Health app from Google Play or the Apple App Store |
| Wireless connection | Bluetooth enabled; keep the Fitbit close to the phone |
| Network | Internet access for uploading data to the account |
| Device state | Fitbit charged and compatible with the current app |
Google’s compatibility requirements are listed at this support page. The latest devices require a phone or tablet for setup; a Windows or Mac computer is not a dependable substitute (setup guidance).

Put Fitbit data on a Windows or Mac computer
For viewing
First complete a phone sync and verify that the newest measurements are visible in Google Health. On a computer, sign in to the available Google Health or Fitbit web account view. Google cautions that web views may not contain every mobile feature; do not assume complete feature parity (privacy and dashboard information).
For a spreadsheet or backup
- Sync the Fitbit in Google Health.
- Confirm the relevant dates and metrics are present in the account.
- Open Google’s Google Health data-and-privacy controls on the computer.
- Request an export of the desired information.
- Download the archive when it is prepared and save a backup copy.
- Open the supplied files in a spreadsheet, text editor or analysis tool.
Exports can include activity, exercise, sleep, heart-rate and other Google Health/Fitbit data (export instructions). An export is a periodic download, not a live Bluetooth feed, and it may contain multiple files rather than one tidy CSV.
Troubleshoot a Fitbit that will not sync
The device does not appear during setup
- Place the Fitbit on its charger.
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled.
- Open Google Health and retry setup there.
- Turn Bluetooth off, wait about 10 seconds, then turn it on.
- Restart the Fitbit and the phone.
- Remove another Fitbit from the account if a device limit is involved.
- Forget the Fitbit in the phone’s Bluetooth list, then add it again through Google Health.
- Only after confirming the operating system is supported, reinstall Google Health.
Google’s setup troubleshooting is at this guide.
Bluetooth says connected, but Google Health does not sync
A system Bluetooth connection alone is insufficient. Forget the device in Bluetooth settings and complete pairing from Google Health, which manages Fitbit setup and synchronization.

Sync works only while the app is open
On Android, check Google Health’s background-data permission, unrestricted mobile data when Data Saver is enabled, battery optimization and Location or Nearby Devices access. Operating-system background restrictions can delay automatic sync, notifications, GPS and firmware updates (background-operation guidance). Google also documents permission details at its location and Nearby Devices page.
Data is missing after a successful sync
- Leave the device near the phone long enough for a complete upload.
- Refresh the app in case it is showing cached information.
- Check background restrictions and account migration status.
- Confirm that the metric is supported and visible in the account view you are using.
- Remember that older models may have reduced current support.
For persistent firmware or synchronization problems, Google recommends an updated app, a charged device, stable connectivity, keeping the app available and resetting up the device when necessary (firmware and sync troubleshooting).
You have no compatible phone
Current Fitbit devices require a compatible Android phone or iPhone for setup and syncing. A Windows or Mac computer is not a supported replacement. Do not rely on unofficial drivers, APKs, old installers or third-party pairing utilities.

Your old Fitbit account no longer works
Google’s published policy says Fitbit-account access ended after May 19, 2026, and deletion processing began July 15, 2026 for applicable accounts. Use Google’s official recovery or support channels, but do not assume historical data can still be recovered.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fitbit Connect and older devices
Some older products—including models documented in the Alta, Charge and Blaze manuals—were designed to sync with a computer through Fitbit Connect, Bluetooth or a Fitbit wireless USB dongle. Historical manuals describe automatic syncing when the computer was awake, online and within range:
These documents refer to older products, operating systems, Fitbit accounts and Fitbit.com services. They are historical evidence, not proof that a current tracker supports direct computer sync. If a guide tells you to install Fitbit Connect or use a dongle, verify the exact model, software availability, account requirements and operating-system compatibility first. Never download a purported Fitbit Connect installer from an unknown third-party site.
Alternatives for sharing or automating data
Health Connect, Apple Health and other services
Google documents connections through Health Connect on Android, Apple Health on iPhone and selected direct integrations (third-party connection details). These routes are useful for consolidating health records, but they are not direct computer-sync tools. Metric coverage varies by service, and calculations may differ.
Developer access
For automation rather than ordinary consumer syncing, Google announced that the legacy Fitbit Web API is scheduled to be turned down in September 2026 in favor of a next-generation Google Health API (announcement). Because the transition is time-sensitive, developers should consult the current official documentation before choosing endpoints, scopes or an OAuth design.
The practical decision
- Current Fitbit: use Google Health on Android or iPhone, then view or export on the computer.
- Older Fitbit: check the exact model for a documented Fitbit Connect workflow, recognizing that legacy software or account services may fail.
- Spreadsheet need: use an account export, not a computer Bluetooth pairing attempt.
- No compatible phone: a current Fitbit may not be usable through a computer alone.
The Bottom Line
For a current Fitbit, the supported route is Google Health on a compatible phone. Once the device has synchronized, a Windows or Mac computer is useful for account viewing and data export—not as the primary Bluetooth sync host.
