Specialist accounts describe watches assembled around established third-party movements, sold through jewelers and tourist outlets, and sometimes bearing another retailer’s or brand’s name on the dial. That modest, distributed history is part of their appeal—and it means the name alone cannot tell you what is inside or what the case is made of.
What is a Chronographe Suisse?
“Chronographe Suisse” does not point to one consistent movement, case material, or dial design. Specialist watch writing describes it as an unconventional supply and sales context: watches used movements made by other Swiss manufacturers, and some dials carried a jeweler’s or another name alongside Chronographe Suisse.
Nacho Conde Garzón wrote in Fratello Watches on 27 October 2021: “It would be more accurate to say that it’s somewhat unconventional, as the brand as such was more of a parts manufacturer.” Monochrome’s specialist history likewise presents the name in the context of a productive supplier or brand using movements from several makers. Why are these watches called souvenirs?
Fratello reports that Chronographe Suisse watches were sold through jewelers and tourist shops, including airport-lounge stores in Switzerland, and characterizes them as relatively inexpensive watches marketed to visitors. That distribution helps explain the souvenir-watch description. It does not establish what share of sales went to tourists: no sales ledger or quantified tourist-sales figure is cited.

How to identify a particular watch
Check the movement, not just the dial
Specialist accounts report examples with Landeron, Venus, and Valjoux movements. The dial name does not confirm which calibre is inside. Have a watchmaker or a specialist inspect it; do not open an old chronograph yourself to identify its movement.
Passion Horlogère gives the Landeron 48 a production figure of around 3,500,000 units (Passion Horlogère, 2011), and describes it as a cam chronograph produced from 1937 to 1970. That is a movement-production estimate, not a count of Chronographe Suisse watches. Passion Horlogère.

Verify the case metal and condition
Reported examples range from gold- or nickel-plated base metal to stainless steel and solid 18-karat gold. A gold-colored case is not proof of solid gold. Inspect relevant marks and the case as a whole; when the material is uncertain, ask a qualified watchmaker or other appropriate specialist to assess it. A mark on one component should not be taken as proof that every case component is the same metal.
Fratello reports example case sizes of 34–38 mm, not a universal specification. Its account also notes that some thin gold cases and lugs can be vulnerable to dents. Check the individual watch for damage and wear rather than relying on the model name or a general size range.

Assess originality, service, and fit
For a meaningful comparison between two examples, establish the movement and service condition, verified case metal and case condition, originality and condition of the dial, hands, and other parts, dimensions and strap fit, and the date and context of any documented sale. These are practical comparison points, not a formal grading standard.
Fratello’s 2021 example had 20 mm lugs; that measurement applies to its watch, not every Chronographe Suisse. Measure the lug width of the watch you own before ordering a replacement strap.

What did these watches cost, and what are they worth now?
Fratello Watches reported a historical price range of €450–€2,000 in 2021, with plated examples toward the lower end and steel or solid 18-karat-gold examples at higher levels depending on condition. This is dated reporting, not a current appraisal or price recommendation. An individual watch needs to be assessed for its actual case metal, movement, originality, condition, and service state; the name on the dial is not enough to establish its value. Fratello Watches.
What the name cannot establish
The specialist accounts support a varied, distributed history, but they do not provide an exact Chronographe Suisse production total, a definitive founding date, or an ownership record. Nor do they quantify tourist sales. Treat claims about those specifics cautiously unless they are backed by additional documentation.
