Which Omega watch does Don Draper wear?
Christie’s identifies the watch worn by Jon Hamm as Don Draper as an Omega Seamaster De Ville, reference 166.020. Its catalog describes the example as circa 1960, with a stainless-steel case, black gloss dial, date, center seconds, and automatic caliber 560 movement. The case measures 34 mm. Christie’s catalog entry is the strongest source for the screen-used watch’s identification and specifications.
Fratello independently identifies the on-screen model as a black-dial Seamaster DeVille with a date, though its early report estimates the movement as caliber 562 or 563. For the physical screen-used watch’s specifications, Christie’s later catalog listing of caliber 560 is the more specific evidence. Fratello’s identification provides useful independent context.
Was the black crosshair dial original?
No. Christie’s states that the dial was repainted black with crosshairs before the watch was worn on the show. The dial gives the watch its recognizable screen appearance, but it should not be taken as proof that a vintage Seamaster De Ville left the factory that way. Christie’s also notes that a second Omega was repainted to match as a spare; that spare did not appear on screen. The auction catalog records these details.

Why was the Seamaster De Ville chosen for Don?
According to Hodinkee’s account of the sourcing, prop master Ellen Freund needed a watch for Don shortly before season-five filming. Vintage dealer Derek Dier suggested the Seamaster De Ville as a recognizable 1960s Omega. The choice suited the show’s 1966 setting and Don’s tailored wardrobe: the modest-sized case and clean dial read as a period dress watch rather than a modern sports watch.
Keep the two dates distinct: the show’s relevant setting is 1966, while Christie’s catalog dates the screen-used physical watch to circa 1960. The fictional year and the auctioned watch’s estimated age describe different things.

What to check when comparing vintage examples
A listing described as “Don Draper style” or “Mad Men watch” does not establish that the watch is the screen-used example—or that its dial is original. For a vintage Seamaster De Ville, assess the specific watch and its documentation rather than relying on a resemblance to the television prop.
- Reference and case: Check that the seller’s stated reference and case details match the watch being offered; the screen-used example is cataloged as ref. 166.020 with a 34 mm case.
- Dial originality: Ask whether the dial has been refinished or replaced. A black crosshair dial can imitate the prop’s production repaint and is not, by itself, evidence of factory originality.
- Movement and service: Request clear movement information and any service records. A vintage mechanical watch’s condition should be assessed individually.
- Condition and components: Inspect the case, crown, and other parts for correctness and wear. Fratello specifically cautions buyers about redials and incorrect crowns.
- Provenance and terms: Ask for seller history and supporting provenance, and review return terms. The auctioned watch’s documented screen provenance is specific to that example.
There are two different goals: matching the television styling and finding a vintage watch with an original dial. The screen look is a black crosshair dial, but that dial was repainted for filming. Neither goal can be confirmed from a listing title alone.

Does a black leather strap fit?
A black leather strap can help recreate Don’s styling, but compatibility depends on the individual watch. Confirm its lug width and buckle fit before ordering; the sources do not establish one universal strap size for every example.
