Ématelier makes both monochrome Grand Feu enamel dials and artistic, hand-painted examples, including bespoke dials for customers’ existing watches. Its 2024 Sprezzatura collection page listed complete watches with handmade Grand Feu dials from $1,900 USD. That is a comparatively accessible price point within the specialist enamel-watch niche, as Oracle of Time judged in August 2024; it does not make the watches inexpensive in absolute terms, and the listed prices are not confirmation of current availability.
What Ématelier makes
Ématelier describes itself as a specialist in traditionally handcrafted Grand Feu dials, spanning monochrome surfaces and artistic work. Its stated techniques include miniature enamel painting, cloisonné, champlevé and lacquer painting. The company also says it accepts bespoke work for customers’ existing watches, so its offering is not limited to buying a complete watch.
For a starting point, see the Ématelier company information and its collection pages. A complete Sprezzatura watch is a different proposition from commissioning a dial for an existing watch: the latter depends on compatibility with that watch, which should be confirmed directly with the maker.
Why hand-painted Grand Feu enamel takes care
Grand Feu enamel is glass applied in layers and hardened through repeated firing. Ématelier’s craft description says an image can be built up layer by layer, with firing between coats; in the Geneva technique, transparent enamel is applied over the completed painting. The company reports that one of its pieces may require as many as 10 to 12 firings, but this is a broad company process description, not a universal specification for every dial.

Firing is a consequential part of the work: Ématelier identifies warping, cracking, bubbling and even a dial exploding as possible outcomes if the firing or color sequence goes wrong. Those risks help explain the skill and labor involved, but they do not establish that every dial takes the same amount of time or undergoes the same number of firings.
Technique changes the result
- Monochrome Grand Feu: a colored enamel dial without a miniature painted scene.
- Miniature painting: an image is painted in enamel layers; the Geneva technique adds a transparent enamel coat over the finished image.
- Sunken and double-sunken dials: layered construction creates recessed or stepped visual depth, reflected in the Sprezzatura price tiers.
- Cloisonné: fine partitions define areas of color. For Sprezzatura, Ématelier specifies a 0.1 mm gold ribbon and twelve enamel colors.

The same collection page stated an initial production run of 70 watches in total, five per model. Check with Ématelier for present stock, configuration and pricing rather than treating the 2024 page as a current price list. The collection’s technical information describes multiple layers and firings at 750°C to 800°C; for its cloisonné option, it specifies eleven firings at those temperatures.
Why “affordable” needs context
In its 14 August 2024 article on Sprezzatura, Oracle of Time described the collection as accessible, connecting that assessment to Ématelier’s choice to avoid some costly movement and case-finishing choices. That is a relative judgment about a specialist niche, not an objective claim that a watch costing $1,900 or more is cheap. The documented price point helps explain the comparison, but it does not establish current prices or availability.

When comparing options, separate three questions: whether you want a finished watch or a custom dial; which dial technique and construction appeal to you; and whether a published price is still being offered. Ask the maker to confirm what is included in a present quote and whether an existing watch can accept a bespoke dial.

- Sprezzatura (2024): the technical page gives 750°C to 800°C for multiple firings; its cloisonné configuration is described as eleven firings at that range.
- Elements: Ématelier’s Elements collection page describes black, white and blue dials with multiple firings at 900°C, and says fired enamel markings are fused into the polished surface.
- Harmony (2017): Ématelier’s historical release described a miniature hand-painted dial taking seven to ten days of work and twelve firings at 750°C to 800°C. Those details apply to that release, not automatically to current dials.
These are maker-published specifications, not independent measurements. The different figures reflect collection-specific descriptions rather than a single stated temperature or firing count for every Ématelier dial.
