It keeps the original 222’s tonneau profile and fluted bezel while adding a contemporary steel case, transparent back and an in-house self-winding movement.
What the steel Historiques 222 is
Reference 4200H/222A-B934 (also identified as X42AB934) is Vacheron Constantin’s stainless-steel continuation of the Historiques 222 line. The watch measures 37 mm across and 7.95 mm thick, with an integrated steel bracelet and a matte blue dial.
The original 222 debuted in 1977 to mark Vacheron Constantin’s 222nd anniversary. Jorg Hysek’s design used a monobloc tonneau case, a fluted bezel and an integrated bracelet. Vacheron revived the model in 18-karat yellow gold in March 2022, then followed with this steel interpretation in 2025.
Vacheron describes the steel edition as retaining the distinctive design and nostalgic character of the original while being “resolutely contemporary.” The contemporary details are most visible in the matte blue dial and sapphire display back.

Design details and wrist fit
A 1970s silhouette in steel
The case is a monobloc tonneau rather than a conventional round sports-watch shell. Its fluted bezel, stepped geometry and integrated bracelet create the 222’s recognizable profile, while the Maltese cross appears at 5 o’clock as a case-side signature.
Dial and finishing
The matte blue surface is less reflective than a sunburst dial and gives the watch a deliberately restrained appearance. Gold-tone baton markers and hands add warmth, and Super-LumiNova provides low-light legibility. The bracelet alternates polished and satin surfaces to preserve the contrast associated with the design.

Proportions
At 37 mm wide and under 8 mm thick, the 222 is compact for an integrated-bracelet luxury watch. Fratello’s reported 45.3 mm lug-to-lug measurement helps explain why it can wear neatly on smaller and medium wrists, although the bracelet’s fixed integrated architecture limits strap-swapping and makes trying one on especially useful.
Calibre 2455/2: what you are getting
Calibre 2455/2 is an automatic movement measuring 26.2 mm by 3.6 mm. It runs at 4 Hz, uses 27 jewels and contains 194 parts. Its stated 40-hour reserve is practical for daily wear but shorter than the reserves offered by some newer movements in competing luxury sports watches.

The Hallmark of Geneva certification is significant: it covers the movement’s finishing, construction and testing requirements under the certification’s rules. The sapphire back makes that work visible rather than hiding it behind a solid caseback.

Hodinkee reported that the model was immediately available at launch, exclusive to Vacheron Constantin boutiques and not a limited edition. That describes the launch position, not guaranteed stock today: allocations, local taxes and delivery timing can change. Contacting a Vacheron Constantin boutique or requesting an appointment is the most direct route to a new watch.
Richemont’s FY25 annual report described the steel 222 as the Maison’s opening-year reintroduction of an iconic model. The report’s wording reflects the importance of the launch, not a promise of unrestricted supply.

“Better” depends on what you value. The 222 is a strong choice for a buyer who prioritizes historical continuity, a smaller case and a less common design language. Royal Oak and Nautilus families have their own signature bezel-and-bracelet shapes, and the exact dimensions, movement and water rating vary by reference; they cannot be judged as a single uniform specification.

The 222’s case is not trying to out-tool a sports watch. Its appeal is the combination of 1970s architecture, discreet dimensions and high-end finishing in a design that is rarer on the wrist than the most familiar integrated-bracelet icons.
