Fitbit Isn’t Dead: Google’s 2026 Hardware Is the Screenless Fitbit Air

Fitbit’s 2026 hardware is the screenless Google Fitbit Air—not a confirmed Charge 7 or smartwatch. Here’s how it fits into Google’s new Health app and Pixel Watch strategy.

Fitbit is still making hardware, but the 2026 device is not a new smartwatch or a confirmed Charge successor. Google announced the Google Fitbit Air on May 7, 2026: a screenless tracker built around the Google Health app, sold in the US from $99.99. The Fitbit name remains on trackers; Google Health has replaced the Fitbit app, while Pixel Watch is Google’s smartwatch line.

What did “new Fitbit hardware in 2026” mean?

In 2025, reporting said a Fitbit executive had indicated that new hardware was planned for 2026. The report did not identify a product category, so it left open whether Google meant a Charge-style tracker, a smaller band, a screenless device, or a smartwatch. Tom’s Guide’s original report and Android Central’s discussion of possible successors reflected that uncertainty.

That promise has since produced the Fitbit Air. Names such as Charge 7, Inspire 4, Luxe 2, and a new Fitbit smartwatch remain speculation, not confirmed products. Google’s current store lists existing Fitbit models alongside Pixel Watch, but listing a model is not a commitment to release its successor.

What is the Google Fitbit Air?

Fitbit Air is a small, screen-free wearable designed for continuous tracking. It records activity, sleep, and a range of health-related metrics; the user reviews the information in the Google Health app rather than on the wrist. Google announced it on May 7, 2026, at a US starting price of $99.99. The Special Edition was announced at $129. Google’s offer includes three months of Google Health Premium for eligible buyers or new and returning members, subject to the offer terms. Coaching features beyond basic tracking depend on Premium membership.

Google lists heart rate, steps, active zone minutes, distance, calories, sleep, blood oxygen (SpO2), heart-rate variability, resting heart rate, breathing rate, skin-temperature variation, cardio load, readiness, and heart-rhythm features. It has vibration feedback but no display. Heart-rhythm notifications should be treated as alerts about possible signs, not as a diagnosis.

Google’s battery estimate is up to seven days, not a guaranteed runtime. The company says the estimate came from pre-production hardware and software tested in 2025 with default settings; actual battery life varies with use and settings. What the screenless design changes

The Air suits people who want a small tracker they can wear without checking a watch face. Its minimal design may be less distracting and more comfortable for sleep or continuous wear than a conventional smartwatch. Data and coaching live in the phone app, so the device is best understood as a sensor and tracker—not a miniature watch.

  • Long battery life: Google Fitbit Air’s battery lasts up to a week, and fast charging gets you one day of battery life in just five minutes[6,7]
  • No wrist display: It cannot show the time, live workout metrics, notifications, maps, or music controls.
  • Phone-led use: You need a phone to review information. People who want immediate on-wrist workout feedback should consider a screen-equipped tracker or smartwatch.
  • GPS: Google’s listed specifications do not identify built-in GPS. For runs where you do not want to carry a phone, choose a device whose built-in GPS is explicitly listed.
  • Coaching: Google Health Premium is required for the personalized coaching experience; the included trial is subject to eligibility and offer terms.

Google presents Fitbit Air as a screenless tracker and contrasts it with screen-equipped Fitbit devices on its Fitbit comparison page. That makes the Air a poor choice if you expect the functions of a smartwatch.

What happened to the Fitbit app?

Beginning May 19, 2026, Google started transitioning the Fitbit app into the Google Health app. Its four primary sections are Today, Fitness, Sleep, and Health. The change is a key reason the Fitbit brand can appear to be disappearing: the software has a new name, while Fitbit remains on hardware such as the Air and Charge 6.

Google says existing Fitbit users’ historical data, milestones, and health trends remain available through the transition, and that existing Fitbit and Pixel Watch devices continue to work with the new app. That does not establish that every legacy feature or screen will remain unchanged. The rollout and navigation are described in Google Health’s transition support page; Google’s Google Health app announcement explains its broader role.

  • Fitbit: A continuing hardware identity for trackers, including Fitbit Air and Charge 6.
  • Google Health: The app and coaching layer that replaced the Fitbit app.
  • Pixel Watch: Google’s smartwatch platform, with on-wrist apps and broader watch functions.

Is a Charge 7 or new Fitbit smartwatch coming?

There is no verified announcement in the available official sources for a Charge 7, Inspire 4, Luxe 2, or successor to Sense 2 or Versa 4. The confirmed 2026 hardware is Fitbit Air. Google continues to show Charge 6, Inspire 3, Sense 2, and Versa 4 in its store, but a product listing does not confirm a replacement or future release.

Google’s current product presentation places Pixel Watch alongside Fitbit trackers and older Fitbit smartwatch models. That supports the view that Pixel Watch is the company’s main smartwatch line and Fitbit is still useful as a tracker and health brand. It does not prove Google has permanently ruled out another Fitbit-branded watch. See the current Google Store lineup and Fitbit product comparison.

The screenless Air also suggests—this is an interpretation, not a stated roadmap—that Google is exploring a lower-distraction wearable whose value depends on passive sensing and app-based coaching, rather than on another full-featured watch.

Fitbit Air versus Charge 6, Inspire 3, and Pixel Watch 4

Device Best fit What sets it apart
Google Fitbit Air People seeking screen-free, small-form tracking for sleep and everyday health data No display; phone app for viewing data; up to seven days’ battery per Google’s qualified estimate; US price from $99.99
Fitbit Charge 6 People who want a conventional tracker with on-device feedback Display, built-in GPS, Google Maps, and Google Wallet; see Google’s Fitbit comparison
Fitbit Inspire 3 People who want basic tracking in a traditional band Display, up to 10 days of battery life, and phone-connected GPS; Google’s US product page showed a $99.95 price signal, which may change; see Inspire 3 details
Pixel Watch 4 People wanting a full smartwatch with apps and Google services On-wrist apps, notifications, maps, and broader smartwatch functions; see Google’s Pixel Watch comparison

Google’s comparison pages are the sources for the feature distinctions above. They do not establish current prices for Charge 6 or Pixel Watch 4 here, so check the live store listing rather than assuming a price. A smartwatch also has a different size, battery-life profile, and use case from a small screenless tracker.

Who should choose Fitbit Air—and who should skip it?

Fitbit Air is a good fit if you

  • Prefer not to have a screen on your wrist and are comfortable checking data in an app.
  • Prioritize a small wearable for sleep and continuous tracking over live workout feedback.
  • Use Android 11 or later or iOS 16.4 or later, and can meet the Bluetooth, internet, and location-permission requirements for syncing.
  • Want Fitbit-style tracking in Google’s new Health app and understand that advanced coaching involves Premium.

Choose another device if you

  • Need a display, notifications, on-wrist apps, or live workout metrics.
  • Run without a phone and need built-in GPS; Charge 6 or a GPS-equipped smartwatch is a more suitable direction.
  • Want a smartwatch rather than a tracker; Pixel Watch is Google’s option for that category.
  • Expect medical-grade diagnosis. Fitness wearables can provide health-related estimates and notifications, but should not be treated as a substitute for professional care.

As with other wrist-worn trackers, reported heart-rate readings can vary with placement, movement, activity, and individual physiology. Health metrics such as SpO2 may not be available in every circumstance. If readings or alerts affect a medical decision, consult a qualified clinician.
