Masa & Co is the original-watch brand of Masa’s Pastime, a Tokyo atelier that grew from antique-watch restoration into repairs, component-making, dial work and case production. Its MP Series brings those capabilities together in watches powered by the MP1 movement; a separate Nayuta lineup is developed under different creative oversight.
From antique-watch restoration to original watches
Masa’s Pastime says it was established in Higashimurayama, Tokyo, in 1990, with a focus on restoring antique watches. The business moved to Kichijoji in 1999. Its official site describes original-watch production as a progression from restoration work, and says Masa & Co was established in 2023 as its original-watch brand: Masa’s Pastime — Original Watches.
In a 2025 interview with MONOCHROME Watches, founder Masa Nakajima recounted that he worked as a professional scuba diver in the Philippines, Indonesia and the U.S. West Coast in the early to mid-1980s. He said his interest in antique watches began after meeting a Japanese vintage-watch buyer. Nakajima said he returned to Japan in 1990 and started a business first called “Masa’s Junkyard.”
Nakajima also said he began repairing watches himself around 1995, after customers complained about repairs performed by another local watchmaker to whom he had sent their watches. That account helps explain what “all-round atelier” means here: repair and restoration were not separate from watchmaking, but the foundation for developing more of the work in-house.

How the atelier’s capabilities expanded
Masa’s Pastime says its restoration work developed into making components for antique watches, engraving and guilloché dial work, and producing cases with modern machining equipment. The move to original watches therefore followed a practical path: first restoring and repairing timepieces, then building the skills and workshop capabilities needed to make parts and complete watches.
The dates describe different milestones, not a single launch. Masa’s Pastime says the Masa & Co brand was established in 2023; the 2025 interview says the MP1 became a reality and launched in 2024.

The MP Series: Nagi, Shike and Sohkoku
The September 2025 interview names three original MP-series watches: Nagi, Shike and Sohkoku. All use the MP1, which Nakajima described as a mechanical movement with an approximately 32-hour running time. This is an interview-reported specification, not an independently tested result.

The distinction among these models established in the interview is their movement decoration: Nagi and Shike use striped finishing, while Sohkoku’s finish is frosted and its balance cock carries engraved hemp-leaf motifs. The available information does not establish current prices, dimensions, water resistance, warranty terms or detailed dial and case specifications.

What the interview says about the MP1
Nakajima described the MP1 as a manually finished movement, including hand-bevelled back plates, mirror-polished steel parts and screw heads, and hand-bevelled wheels in the gold train. He also said the hardened and tempered steel escape-wheel and pallet components are bevelled and hand-polished.
In the same interview, Nakajima described a beryllium-copper balance with six timing screws and three K18 mass lots, alongside a free-sprung overcoiled hairspring made from a palladium alloy. He said the workshop makes components apart from the mainspring, hairspring material and rubies, which he said are imported from Switzerland and Germany. These are the maker’s descriptions in the interview, rather than independently verified specifications.

Masa & Co also has a separate Nayuta lineup
The MP Series is not the only Masa & Co collection. Nakajima described the MP watches as directly overseen and produced by him. The separate Nayuta lineup is designed under the supervision of watchmaker Nayuta Shinohara and made collaboratively with the team. He said the two collections share no parts, so the Nayuta watches should not be treated as variants of the MP1-powered MP Series.

Custom-order status has changed over time, and the available statements do not establish whether bespoke work is available on 4 October 2026. In the September 2025 interview, Nakajima said the atelier was not accepting new fully bespoke orders; he described that pause as having begun around two years earlier, when original watches equipped with the MP1 launched. Masa’s Pastime later listed a notice dated 19 November 2025 suspending customization and custom-made cases. For current status, use the contact route on the official Masa’s Pastime site.

The interview also reported a gradual plan to develop watches with different movements, anticipated “sometime next year” from the perspective of its 2025 publication. That forecast is not confirmation that another movement or model launched in 2026.
Why the “all-round atelier” description fits
Masa & Co’s story is not simply that a vintage-watch restorer began selling original watches. The company presents an older restoration business and a newer watch brand as connected stages of work: Masa’s Pastime developed repair, component-making, dial and case capabilities, while Masa & Co applies the atelier’s watchmaking to original models. The MP Series makes that connection visible through its shared movement and distinct finishing choices; Nayuta represents a separate collection with its own watchmaker-led oversight.
