The DW-5000R-1A is Casio’s modern re-creation of the 1983 DW-5000C, the first G-SHOCK. It closely follows the original’s square-case design and several small exterior details, but it is not an exact reproduction: the case is listed as slightly larger, and the revival adds a high-brightness LED backlight and bio-based resin bezel and band. This is a guide to Casio’s published details, not a first-hand review.
What the DW-5000R-1A revives
Casio announced the DW-5000R on November 28, 2024, describing it as a re-creation of the DW-5000C released in 1983. Casio says this version reproduces the original more faithfully than its earlier limited-edition anniversary revivals and positions it as a standard model in its lineup. That is Casio’s characterization, rather than an independently measured comparison.
The recognizable formula remains: a square digital watch with a protective bezel and the original’s red, blue and yellow face accents. Casio calls out several specific details in the re-creation:
- The band follows the original’s length and form, including the uneven areas around the holes and the positions of its dimples.
- The bezel top is flat and carries the “PROTECTION” and “G-SHOCK” lettering.
- The watch retains a stainless-steel center case and a screw-lock case back engraved “Shock Resistant.” Casio notes that the back engraving’s orientation may vary from watch to watch.
What changed from the original
The DW-5000R keeps the original’s visual cues, but Casio’s published information identifies practical updates as well as a dimensional difference. The international product information gives the revival a 42.3 mm case size, compared with 41.6 mm for the original. That is a 0.7 mm increase; it does not by itself establish how the watch will fit a particular wrist.

Is it a faithful re-creation or a modernized watch?
It is both, in distinct ways. The case-and-dial identity, flat marked bezel, band detailing, steel center case and screw-lock back connect the DW-5000R to the original. The LED backlight, bio-based resin components and slightly larger listed case size are departures in materials or specification.
