A Samsung Galaxy Ring became painful and stuck on tech creator Daniel Rotar’s finger in September 2025, forcing him to seek hospital assistance before it could be removed. Early reports described the incident as battery swelling. Samsung later said its own examination and an independent analysis found that a crack in the ring’s internal molding caused the deformation, and that it identified no wider Galaxy Ring battery-safety risk.
That conclusion does not make a damaged ring safe to handle. It does mean this single, serious incident is not evidence of a confirmed defect affecting every Galaxy Ring.
What happened to the Galaxy Ring?
On September 29, 2025, Daniel Rotar, who publishes as ZONEofTECH, reported that his Galaxy Ring had begun swelling while he was wearing it. The ring became painful and could not be removed normally as he prepared to board a flight. He was unable to travel and later went to a hospital for help.
Reports said airport attempts using soap, water or hand cream did not work. At the hospital, staff used ice to reduce finger swelling and medical lubricant to slide the ring off. The ring was reportedly removed without cutting it. Photographs taken afterward appeared to show separation or distortion around the ring’s inner section. Rotar later said the marks and irritation on his finger were expected to heal.

Samsung contacted Rotar, obtained the device for examination and was reported to have reimbursed travel-related expenses, including hotel and return-travel costs. Initial coverage quoted Samsung describing the event as an “extremely rare” case while it investigated (Android Authority’s initial report; PhoneArena’s account).
Was the battery actually swollen?
The user’s initial description and the ring’s appearance made battery swelling a reasonable early description. Samsung’s later reported finding was more specific: a crack in the internal molding caused the swelling or deformation observed in this particular ring. Samsung said its investigation and an independent external analysis reached the same conclusion.
Samsung did not determine what caused the molding crack. The reported conclusion therefore does not establish whether impact, manufacturing variation, wear, environmental exposure or another factor created the crack. It also should not be rephrased as proof that the battery could never have contributed to the failure. The defensible finding is that Samsung attributed the observed deformation to cracked internal molding and said it found no broader battery-safety risk (Samsung investigation report; independent coverage).

What remains unknown?
- What caused the internal molding to crack.
- Whether heat, salt water, travel or charging played any role. Those possibilities were discussed, but no causal link was established.
- How many comparable incidents, if any, have occurred across the product line.
- Whether a regulator separately reviewed this individual case.
- Whether the returned unit had a manufacturing, impact-related or wear-related defect.
The Galaxy Ring’s IP68 rating is not a guarantee against every type of water or saltwater exposure. That qualification is relevant to care and fit, but it does not show that saltwater caused this incident (follow-up reporting; Tom’s Guide account).
Was the user seriously injured?
The documented effects were pain and pressure from a ring that had become difficult to remove, followed by hospital assistance. Reports mentioned small marks or irritation afterward. The available coverage does not establish a burn, chemical injury, permanent disability or other severe lasting harm, so those descriptions should not be inferred.
Is the Galaxy Ring unsafe?
No searched evidence establishes a recall, government safety notice or widespread Galaxy Ring battery defect. Samsung’s January 2026 statement said the returned ring’s swelling resulted from cracked internal molding and that it found no wider product battery-safety risk.

There is nevertheless a ring-specific hazard worth taking seriously. A rigid, sealed electronic ring can become constricting when a finger swells or the ring deforms. That is different from an ordinary ring that is merely tight because finger size changes during the day. A battery-life decline alone is also not proof of swelling.
What to do if a Galaxy Ring is hot, swollen or stuck
Safety warning: If a finger is painful, numb, blue, cold, increasingly swollen or losing sensation, treat circulation as the priority and seek urgent medical help.

- Do not puncture, crush, pry open, cut or disassemble it. Samsung’s manual warns that damaging or puncturing the sealed battery can create fire or explosion hazards (Galaxy Ring safety guidance).
- Do not attempt a battery repair or replacement. The ring is not designed for user servicing.
- Get professional removal if the finger is swelling or the ring will not come off easily. Contact emergency services or go to an emergency department rather than experimenting with household tools.
- Keep a damaged device away from flammable materials if it can be moved without worsening the injury. Do not delay medical care to preserve the ring.
- After the immediate problem is resolved, photograph the device, retain purchase records and contact Samsung support.
Samsung was reported to have suggested cold water or soap-and-water methods for some stuck-ring situations (9to5Google). Those suggestions should not be treated as a universal home procedure for a ring that is hot, cracked, separating or otherwise structurally damaged. The ice-and-lubricant removal described in Rotar’s case was performed by hospital staff, not established as a do-it-yourself protocol.

What does this mean for prospective buyers?
The incident is a reason to consider fit, service and removability—not proof that everyone should avoid the Galaxy Ring. Samsung recommends using its sizing process before ordering. People whose hands or fingers regularly swell should discuss continuous ring wear with a clinician and may prefer a device that can be removed instantly.

Should you choose a different wearable?
A smartwatch or fitness band is generally easier to remove quickly and is less likely to constrict a swollen finger, although it is larger and less discreet. Oura, Ultrahuman and RingConn offer other smart-ring ecosystems, but their current prices, subscriptions, compatibility and service terms must be checked for your region. None should be assumed immune to hardware failure.

The Galaxy Ring is most compelling for people already invested in Samsung phones and Samsung Health who are comfortable with a sealed device worn continuously on a finger. Readers who prioritize instant removal, have recurring finger swelling or dislike non-user-serviceable hardware may be better served by a wrist-worn alternative.
The current bottom line
The hospital visit was real, and a deformed smart ring can present a genuine constriction hazard. But Samsung’s later investigation did not conclude that the Galaxy Ring line had a broad battery-safety defect: it attributed this ring’s deformation to cracked internal molding and left the origin of that crack unresolved. Treat any hot, swollen or damaged ring as a professional-removal problem, not a DIY repair project.
