Some Galaxy Watch4, Watch4 Classic, Watch5, and Watch5 Pro owners have reported that Raise wrist to wake stops working, including after updates or when Sleep mode ends. That does not establish one defect affecting every watch: Samsung documents several modes that intentionally block wake gestures, while reports of update-related failures remain anecdotal. Check settings and automatic modes first; a setting left off by Sleep mode or a routine can look like a sensor failure.
First identify what is failing
Raise wrist to wake is only one way to activate the display. Before changing settings, test the watch while stationary: press the Home/Power button, tap the screen, then deliberately lift and rotate your wrist as if checking the time. Note which actions work. A failure that happens only while cycling or navigating is different from a display that never responds.
- Wrist wake fails, but the button works: focus on the wake setting, power or silent modes, Sleep mode, and routines.
- Touch and wrist wake both fail, but the button works: check modes and Power saving; Samsung says these can restrict wake gestures.
- The button also fails, or the screen is slow or frozen: investigate a broader software or device problem rather than assuming the wrist sensor alone is at fault.
- The screen wakes and then goes dark quickly: check whether this is a timeout or another display behavior, not a failure to wake.
- The feature works at rest but not during a particular activity: record the activity and test conditions; that alone does not prove a hardware fault.
Samsung’s menu names and options can vary by watch and software version. Its [wake-gesture troubleshooting guide](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/troubleshoot/TSG10007117/) covers Wear OS models, including the relevant display setting and mode restrictions.
Why Raise wrist to wake can stop working
The setting is off
The direct cause may be that Raise wrist to wake has been disabled. It can also be changed by an automatic mode or routine rather than by a deliberate manual change.

Power saving or a restricted mode is active
Samsung says Power saving can prevent the screen from turning on by touch or wrist movement. It also lists Do not disturb, Theater mode, Good night/Bedtime mode, and Water lock mode as modes that can prevent wake gestures. These may explain the behavior without indicating a failed sensor. See [Samsung’s explanation of waking-up gestures](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/troubleshoot/TSG10007117/).
Sleep mode or a phone routine changes the setting
Some users report that wrist wake and touch wake remain off after Sleep mode ends. Samsung’s Watch4 firmware notes also say phone Modes can control display and wake functions, including Raise wrist to wake, on supported combinations. That makes a synchronized Sleep mode or a Mode/Routine worth checking when the setting turns itself off. These reports do not establish how widespread the behavior is or prove one universal bug. See [Samsung’s Watch4 update notes](https://doc.samsungmobile.com/SM-R870/019868210826/eng.html) and an [anecdotal Sleep mode report](https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyWatch/comments/1g9ky2f/).
An update may be associated with the problem
Watch4 and Watch5 owners have posted reports associating unreliable wrist wake with updates, including a thread describing behavior after the GVK6 update and a separate Watch4 report involving One UI 5. Those are user reports, not a Samsung defect bulletin or proof that an update caused every instance. Fit, apps, or a broader device issue may complicate testing
A loose or rotating watch, a sleeve over the display, a third-party watch face, or an unresponsive screen can complicate diagnosis. These are practical checks, not established Watch4/5-specific causes. Samsung’s general [screen troubleshooting guide](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/troubleshooting/TSG01003105/) includes software, third-party apps, and device condition among factors to investigate when a screen is slow or unresponsive.
Fix 1: Turn Raise wrist to wake on
- On the watch, open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Turn on Raise wrist to wake.
- Test with a deliberate wrist lift while stationary.
If you prefer to use the phone, open Galaxy Wearable, select the connected watch, and look in its display or wake-up controls. The exact labels can vary by app version, so use the watch’s Display settings if you cannot find the same wording on the phone. Samsung documents the watch path in its [official troubleshooting instructions](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/troubleshoot/TSG10007117/).
Fix 2: Temporarily turn off Power saving
Disable Power saving briefly and repeat the stationary test. If wrist wake returns, the watch was behaving as Samsung describes rather than necessarily suffering a sensor fault. Power saving can extend battery life, but it restricts some wake behavior; decide whether the battery trade-off is worth keeping it on.

Fix 3: Check silent modes and Water lock
- Return to the watch face. Press the Home/Power key if needed.
- Swipe down from the top to open the Status panel.
- Look for Do not disturb, Theater, Good night/Bedtime, or Water lock mode.
- Turn off the relevant mode temporarily, then test wrist wake again.
On Wear OS watches, Sleep mode may be synchronized with the phone and may not be visible where you expect in the watch’s Status panel. Samsung lists these mode restrictions in its [wake-gesture guide](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/troubleshoot/TSG10007117/).
Fix 4: Find out whether Sleep mode or a routine is switching it off
Check the phone’s Sleep mode schedule, Galaxy Wearable synchronization settings, and Samsung Modes and Routines. Look for controls affecting Raise wrist to wake, Touch screen to wake, Always On Display, Theater mode, Do not disturb, or Power saving. Samsung’s [Watch4 firmware notes](https://doc.samsungmobile.com/SM-R870/019868210826/eng.html) confirm that phone Modes can control several watch display and wake functions on supported setups.

- Restart the watch, then turn Raise wrist to wake back on.
- Test before re-enabling Sleep mode or routines.
- If wrist wake works, re-enable the modes or routines one at a time, testing after each, to identify which one changes the behavior.
Fix 5: Restart the watch
Use the watch’s on-screen power controls for a normal restart. If it is unresponsive, Samsung’s forced-reboot procedure is to hold the Home/Power and Back keys together until “Rebooting…” appears; Samsung says this can take up to 30 seconds. Do not release the keys just because the screen changes, and do not mistake a forced reboot for a factory reset. Samsung’s [restart guidance](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/troubleshoot/TSG10007323/) describes the procedure. A reboot does not erase the watch as a factory reset does.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 6: Install available software updates
Check for updates to the watch software, Galaxy Wearable, the watch plug-in or device component, and the phone software where relevant. Menu paths vary by version. An update can be relevant when symptoms began soon after software changed, but installing one is not proof that this particular issue has been fixed.
Samsung’s Watch4 update listing shows a security patch level dated May 5, 2026. That establishes continued updates in the listing reviewed, not a fix for Raise wrist to wake. Check the [Watch4 update page](https://doc.samsungmobile.com/SM-R870/019868210826/eng.html) for the applicable device information.

Fix 7: Isolate watch-face and app conflicts
Temporarily switch to a Samsung default watch face and test without recently installed apps or complications. If the symptom disappears, restore third-party faces or apps one at a time. This is an isolation step, not evidence that a particular face caused the original failure. Samsung’s [screen troubleshooting guide](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/troubleshooting/TSG01003105/) discusses outdated software, third-party apps, and device condition for slow or unresponsive screens.
Fix 8: Compare wake methods and movement conditions
Wear the watch snugly enough that it does not rotate freely. Make sure its underside is clean and dry, move any sleeve away from the display, and temporarily use a default face. Then compare the button, touch, and wrist-raise responses. Test while seated, walking, and—if relevant—during the activity where the issue occurs; note whether navigation or an exercise app is open. Reports describe differences during riding or navigation, but the available evidence does not establish an official cycling restriction for these models. An activity-specific failure could involve gesture recognition, movement context, app behavior, or screen timing rather than a dead motion sensor.
When to reset the watch or seek service
Factory reset is a last diagnostic step
Consider a reset only after checking the wake setting, Power saving, silent modes, Sleep mode and routines, restarting, installing available updates, and testing with a default face under stationary and moving conditions. Back up or sync watch data where supported, record eSIM/LTE details if applicable, and make sure you know your Samsung account credentials. A reset removes local settings and may remove downloaded apps and watch faces; it is not a guaranteed fix.
Contact Samsung or request a service assessment
Seek support if the setting remains enabled but wrist wake never works after those checks, the problem persists after a reset, the display is slow or frozen, or the watch has been dropped, exposed to liquid, or visibly damaged. Inconsistent button wake, touch response, or other motion-dependent functions also points to a broader problem. A Samsung Community response recommends service when documented troubleshooting does not resolve a Watch4 issue; see the [service recommendation](https://us.community.samsung.com/t5/Galaxy-Watch/Galaxy-Watch-4-feature-not-working-quot-Raise-wrist-to-wake-quot/m-p/3003138/highlight/true). Check warranty and repair options before deciding to replace the watch.
How to report a suspected software bug
A report that says only “raise to wake stopped working” is difficult to diagnose. Include the details below and send them through Samsung’s available support or error-reporting route; in-app labels can change, so verify the current path in Galaxy Wearable or Samsung Members.
- Exact model and configuration, such as Watch4 Classic LTE 46 mm.
- Watch software/One UI version, phone model and One UI version, and Galaxy Wearable version.
- When the issue began and whether it followed a watch, phone, or app update.
- Whether Sleep mode, a phone Mode/Routine, or another mode is involved.
- A short sequence that reproduces the failure, including whether it happens only during exercise, cycling, or navigation.
- Whether button wake, touch wake, and Always On Display work.
- A screen recording or video if it clearly shows the behavior, plus the approximate time it occurred.
Should you replace a Watch4 or Watch5?
Not for this symptom alone. First rule out mode restrictions, automatic routines, software state, and configuration; then use Samsung support or service if the failure persists. Replacement becomes a personal value decision if a service assessment identifies a hardware fault or repair is impractical—not a proven remedy for a software or routine interaction.
