Samsung’s “revolutionary” Galaxy Watch health push is now a shipping product, not a future promise. The company announced its next-generation AI health features on June 4, 2026, unveiled Galaxy Watch9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2 on July 22, and began general U.S. sales on August 7. The practical advance is software: Samsung combines watch measurements, personal baselines and recent behavior into scores, trend alerts and suggestions. Those tools may make data easier to act on, but they do not replace a cuff, sleep study or clinician.
Watch9 starts at $379.99 for Bluetooth or $429.99 for LTE in the U.S.; Ultra2 costs $699.99. Feature access depends on the watch, software, paired phone and country.

What Samsung actually launched
Samsung Health now organizes data around sleep, activity, nutrition, mindfulness and vitals. Its AI-based analysis is intended to translate biometric readings into baseline comparisons, trend detection, alerts and behavioral guidance rather than autonomous diagnosis. Samsung describes the system as an everyday health companion (Samsung’s global announcement; U.S. announcement).
The new health features, explained
Vitals
Vitals analyzes overnight heart rate, heart-rate variability, respiratory rate, skin temperature and blood oxygen. It compares those signals with your usual pattern and flags meaningful deviations instead of treating one universal “normal” as the answer. Initial setup requires wearing the watch on seven of 28 nights. Vitals identifies changes; it does not diagnose illness.

Heart Health Score
This wellness score combines sleep duration, blood-pressure trend, body-mass index and vigorous activity. It needs about 24 hours of setup data and is designed to encourage lifestyle changes. A high score is not proof of a healthy heart, and a low one is not a diagnosis or substitute for a checkup.
Daily Cardio Load
For regular exercisers, Daily Cardio Load estimates training burden and recovery needs. Samsung requires at least seven days of activity records and recommends 28 days of continuous wear for optimal accuracy. Stress or anxiety that raises heart rate can raise the estimate too, so treat it as a training aid—not a laboratory measurement or prescription.
Fitness Index
Fitness Index combines measures such as heart rate, VO₂ max and daily steps, and can compare exercise effectiveness with peer groups. Age, sex, disability, medication and training history make peer comparisons inherently limited; the composite can also hide which underlying metric drove the result.
Energy Score and coaching
Energy Score uses recent activity, sleep and heart signals to suggest whether to push or recover. It is a behavioral summary, not a direct reading of energy, fatigue or readiness. Missing nights, illness, alcohol, travel, stress and an inconsistent fit can all distort the input. Samsung also adds sleep coaching and hearing-related alerts, with availability varying by model and market.

AGEs and Antioxidant Index
AGEs Index and Antioxidant Index extend the platform into nutrition and longer-term wellness. They are proprietary indicators intended to encourage healthier choices—not direct readings of biological age, proof that a food prevents disease or clinical tests.
The medical features have firm limits
Sleep-apnea detection
Samsung’s software uses overnight blood-oxygen data and algorithms to identify signs of moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea. In the U.S. it is an FDA-authorized over-the-counter software medical device, but it is a risk-detection aid, not a standalone diagnosis. Users generally wear the watch for about four hours on each of two nights within 10 days; the feature does not catch every case and is not intended for people already diagnosed. Review any alert with a qualified clinician. See Samsung’s Health Monitor information, support instructions and U.S. instructions for use.
Blood-pressure estimates
The U.S. rollout began March 31, 2026. Setup requires a compatible Galaxy Watch and phone, Samsung Health Monitor and a traditional cuff sold separately. After calibration, Samsung requires recalibration every 28 days. The watch provides estimates and trend tracking; it is not a cuff-free replacement and is not intended to diagnose or treat disease (rollout details; requirements).
ECG and rhythm notifications
Where authorized, Samsung Health Monitor can provide ECG and irregular-heart-rhythm notifications. Regulatory authorization and availability differ by country, and these functions remain screening tools rather than comprehensive cardiology testing.

- Everyday protection: Flexible and shock-absorbent layer defends against daily scratches, bumps, and drops
- Raised bezels: Elevated edges offer extra screen protection from direct impacts
- Precise cutouts: Easy access to all buttons and sensors
- Flexible fit: Soft TPU material allows quick and hassle-free installation
- Check for Compatibility: Only compatible with Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 47mm (2026). NOT compatible with Galaxy Watch Ultra 47mm (2025/2024).
What you need before buying
- A compatible Samsung Galaxy phone, Samsung account and Samsung Health; Samsung Health Monitor features are not available on iPhone and may not work on unsupported Android phones.
- For Daily Cardio Load, an Android phone running Android 10 or later, Samsung Health 7.0 or newer, and a Galaxy Watch7 or newer running One UI 9 Watch or later.
- Overnight wear for baseline-dependent features: Vitals needs seven of 28 nights; sleep-apnea screening needs roughly two qualifying nights; blood pressure needs a cuff and 28-day recalibration.
- A supported country, model and software version. Samsung’s compatibility pages are the authority because regulatory approvals vary.
Enable sleep-apnea monitoring
- Pair the watch with a compatible Galaxy phone.
- Open or install Samsung Health Monitor.
- Open Sleep apnea, turn it on and complete the prompts.
- Wear the watch snugly for the required nights.
- Review the result in Samsung Health Monitor and contact a clinician if risk is flagged.
Set up blood-pressure estimates
- Open Samsung Health Monitor and select blood pressure.
- Use a separate cuff to complete Samsung’s resting-position calibration.
- Record estimates only after calibration and repeat it every 28 days.
- Discuss concerning trends with a clinician rather than changing medication yourself.
Where the AI helps—and where it cannot
The useful innovation is interpretation: combining several signals, learning a personal baseline and presenting a next action. AI does not overcome loose fit, dirty sensors, tattoos, movement, missing nights or charging gaps. A baseline made during travel, illness or unusual stress may be misleading. No alert does not prove a condition is absent; an alert does not prove it is present. Do not alter medication, skip necessary exercise or make medical decisions from a score alone. Wear the watch consistently, keep the sensor clean and dry, position it above the wrist bone, update Samsung Health and the watch software, and judge trends over enough days rather than one reading.
Galaxy Watch9 versus Galaxy Watch Ultra2
| Model | U.S. launch pricing | Sizes and best fit | Health value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Watch9 | $379.99 Bluetooth; $429.99 LTE | 40 mm or 44 mm; mainstream users wanting a smaller, lower-cost watch | Headline AI health features, subject to compatibility |
| Galaxy Watch Ultra2 | $699.99 | 47 mm; outdoor users wanting rugged construction, larger battery and premium materials | Not medically superior merely because it costs more |
Choose Watch9 if Samsung’s new guidance is the goal at the lowest current entry price. Choose Ultra2 for its hardware and outdoor profile, not for better diagnoses. Galaxy Watch7 or Watch8 may be sensible discounted alternatives for basic Samsung Health functions, but feature support differs by generation; check Samsung’s comparison page.
Who should skip the upgrade?
- Owners who mainly need steps, notifications and basic sleep tracking.
- iPhone users or anyone unwilling to use Samsung’s phone-and-account ecosystem.
- Buyers expecting a watch to replace a validated cuff, polysomnography or cardiology testing.
- People unlikely to wear a watch overnight, since several features need multi-night baselines.
Verdict
Galaxy Watch9 and Ultra2 make Samsung Health more actionable by turning scattered measurements into personal trends and prompts. That is a meaningful convenience upgrade, but “revolutionary” remains marketing language. The watches can help you notice patterns and decide when to seek advice; they cannot establish that you are ill, healthy or safe without clinical context.
