Garmin fēnix 8 appeared in a pre-launch video—then Garmin confirmed its 29-day battery claim

The Garmin fēnix 8 was genuinely unreleased when a video appeared on August 26, 2024. Garmin officially announced the series the next day, so the watch is no longer an unreleased product. The much-repeated “up to 29 days” figure is real, but only for the 51 mm AMOLED model in smartwatch mode with wrist-gesture display activation.

What the 2024 leak actually showed

PhoneArena reported on August 26, 2024, that an Instagram account operated by Ukrainian reviewer and blogger @keddrofficial had posted video of an apparent fēnix 8 watch. The report described it as a hands-on leak, not an official Garmin announcement, certification filing or retailer listing. PhoneArena’s report established that a pre-release device was circulating, but it did not independently verify every specification.

Unless the original Instagram footage is available for direct inspection, the video should not be treated as proof of the exact case size, display type, crystal, battery reading, software build or final retail hardware. A working-looking watch can show that hardware exists without confirming its final regional features or performance.

When did Garmin officially release the fēnix 8?

Garmin announced the fēnix 8 Series on August 27, 2024, one day after the leak. Its Japanese announcement listed August 29, 2024, for AMOLED models in Japan, while solar Dual Power models were scheduled for mid-October there. Launch timing varied by market. Garmin’s current U.S. product page identifies the fēnix 8 as an existing product; it showed a 1–3-business-day shipping estimate when checked, but stock and delivery dates can change. Garmin’s launch announcement and Garmin Japan’s release notice document those dates.

What “up to 29 days” means

Garmin’s owner’s manual assigns the 29-day estimate specifically to the 51 mm fēnix 8 AMOLED in smartwatch mode with wrist gesture enabled. It is a manufacturer maximum, not a continuous GPS or always-on-display result.

AMOLED model Smartwatch mode, wrist gesture Smartwatch mode, always-on display
43 mm Up to 10 days Up to 4 days
47 mm Up to 16 days Up to 7 days
51 mm Up to 29 days Up to 13 days

For a buyer who insists on an always-on AMOLED screen, the relevant 51 mm headline is therefore up to 13 days, not 29. Garmin says actual endurance changes with wrist heart-rate monitoring, smartphone notifications, GPS, internal sensors and connected sensors, among other enabled features. The 43 mm and 47 mm figures are also maximum estimates; Garmin’s 47 mm product page lists up to 16 days in gesture-based smartwatch mode. See the fēnix 8 owner’s manual and Garmin’s 47 mm product page.

GPS battery life is measured in hours, not weeks

Outdoor athletes should look at activity-recording figures rather than passive smartwatch mode. For the 51 mm AMOLED model, Garmin lists these maximum estimates:

Activity mode Wrist gesture Always-on display
GPS only Up to 84 hours Up to 65 hours
All satellite systems Up to 68 hours Up to 54 hours
All satellite systems + multiband Up to 62 hours Up to 49 hours
All satellite systems + music Up to 18 hours
Max Battery GPS Up to 145 hours
Expedition GPS Up to 31 days

These modes illustrate why “29 days” should never be read as 29 days of continuous navigation. GPS interval, satellite selection, multiband positioning, music playback and screen behavior have a much larger effect during an activity.

What Garmin confirmed after the leak

The fēnix 8 family introduced a broader choice of display and case configurations. Garmin’s announcement confirmed:

  • AMOLED models in 43 mm, 47 mm and 51 mm sizes.
  • Solar models in 47 mm and 51 mm sizes, using Power Sapphire lenses.
  • A built-in speaker and microphone.
  • An integrated LED flashlight.
  • Dive capability.
  • Leakproof metal buttons and a redesigned sensor guard.
  • Advanced strength-training features.
  • ECG app compatibility where supported by software, region and local regulatory availability.

Garmin also gave the 51 mm solar model a separate estimate of up to 48 days in smartwatch mode with an always-on display. That assumes all-day wear and three hours per day outdoors at 50,000 lux. It is not directly comparable with the 51 mm AMOLED’s 29-day gesture estimate because the display technology, charging behavior and test assumptions differ.

AMOLED or solar: which battery claim matters to you?

Choose AMOLED for display presentation

AMOLED provides a brighter, more colorful presentation for maps, data screens and notifications. Its cost is higher consumption, especially when always-on mode is enabled. The 51 mm version offers the longest AMOLED estimate, but its case is also the largest and may not suit smaller wrists.

Choose solar for outdoor endurance

Solar models use a MIP-style display and can extend endurance when regularly exposed to strong outdoor light. The quoted 48-day figure depends on Garmin’s stated light exposure, so it should not be expected in the same way for mostly indoor wearers.

Use size as a battery decision

The 43 mm AMOLED is the most compact option but has the shortest listed endurance. The 47 mm sits between the two. The 51 mm maximizes battery capacity and GPS runtime, while adding wrist presence and weight.

How reliable was the leaked video?

The video is credible evidence that an apparent fēnix 8 unit existed before launch and may have reached a reviewer or insider. It cannot, by itself, establish:

  • Final retail specifications or software.
  • Regional functions such as ECG support.
  • Pricing or release dates.
  • Battery performance under real-world use.
  • Whether the unit was retail hardware, an engineering sample or pre-production hardware.

For specifications, Garmin’s announcement, owner’s manual and product pages carry more authority than social-media footage. The leak became much more informative only after Garmin’s August 27 announcement confirmed the product family and its capabilities.

Who should consider the fēnix 8?

  • Large-wrist users wanting AMOLED: The 51 mm model is the one associated with the 29-day gesture estimate.
  • Ultrarunners and hikers: GPS-only endurance of up to 84 hours, plus Max Battery and Expedition modes, is more relevant than the smartwatch headline.
  • Always-on-display users: Plan around the 13-day maximum for the 51 mm AMOLED, before accounting for GPS, sensors and notifications.
  • Frequent outdoor users: The solar model may make more sense if Garmin’s light-exposure assumptions resemble your routine.
  • Buyers needing communications beyond the standard model: Garmin separately identifies the fēnix 8 Pro with inReach, LTE/satellite capabilities and AMOLED or MicroLED choices; it is a different product proposition.

Launch price and current buying context

Garmin’s U.S. launch announcement gave the fēnix 8 Series a suggested retail price starting at $999.99. That is a launch MSRP reference, not a confirmed transaction price for October 2026. Configurations, discounts and regional pricing vary. The standard fēnix 8 AMOLED buying page is Garmin’s U.S. product page; Garmin also lists a fēnix 8 Solar route at this product page.

The Bottom Line

The August 26, 2024 video was a real pre-launch leak, but the fēnix 8 was officially announced the following day. Garmin later confirmed that “up to 29 days” applies only to the 51 mm AMOLED model with wrist gesture in smartwatch mode; always-on display, GPS and other active features reduce that figure substantially.
