Google’s Gemini-powered health coaching is no longer merely “coming.” Google Health Coach began rolling out on May 19, 2026, inside the renamed Google Health app (formerly Fitbit). It can interpret data from compatible Fitbit and Pixel Watch devices and offer conversational guidance on exercise, sleep, stress, nutrition and other wellness goals—but access depends on your device, country, age, account, subscription and consent settings.

Google first announced a Gemini-built personal health coach on August 20, 2025, initially as a U.S. Fitbit Premium preview (Google announcement). The product name and surrounding app have since changed.
What changed from Fitbit to Google Health?
Beginning May 19, 2026, Google started renaming the Fitbit app Google Health and Fitbit Premium Google Health Premium. The redesigned app uses four bottom tabs: Today, Fitness, Sleep and Health (Google’s support guide).
Health Coach is the personalized feature built with Gemini. It is separate from the consumer Gemini chatbot, so opening Gemini will not automatically expose your Fitbit history. The relevant experience is tied to an eligible wearable and your Google Health account.

What Google Health Coach can do
Health Coach turns logged measurements and goals into a conversational layer. Examples of useful questions include asking why sleep trends changed, how to adjust a workout after a poor night, or what patterns appear in activity and stress data. These are illustrative use cases, not guarantees that every account will receive the same answer.
Fitness and training
Google describes personalized guidance and custom fitness plans based on your goals and historical activity. Deeper coaching experiences such as Ask Coach and custom plans are associated with Google Health Premium in Google’s feature announcements.

Sleep and stress
The app can explain sleep trends and discuss stress or mental-wellbeing patterns. Google also reported a 15% increase in sleep-staging accuracy for Public Preview users compared with its previous-generation algorithm against clinical gold-standard measurements. That is a Google-reported algorithm result, not proof that every AI recommendation or every user’s sleep estimate is clinically accurate (Google’s update).

Features announced during 2026 include food and water logging, calorie targets, personalized macronutrient ranges, cycle-health logging and, for Premium users, personalized cycle insights. Availability can vary by country, language, device and account.
Broader health context
Google Health is designed to combine Fitbit and Pixel Watch information with Health Connect, Apple Health and other connected apps where supported. Google has also announced U.S. Public Preview work for linking lab results, medications and visit history, plus planned or preview continuous-glucose-monitor integrations through Health Connect (Google’s announcement). Those integrations are not universal: country, operating system, permissions and feature rollout all matter.

Who can use it?
Google’s current requirements generally include:
- A compatible Fitbit or Pixel Watch paired with the account. Google’s Public Preview list includes products such as Charge 6, Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Watch 4; support is not universal across every historic Fitbit model.
- Age 18 or older.
- A supported country and, for some features, a supported language.
- The Google Health app, a Google Account and an internet connection.
- Google Health Premium for Premium-only coaching features.
The United States is supported, as are markets including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, India, Mexico, Brazil and numerous European and Asian countries. Feature availability can still differ within a supported market. Preview features roll out gradually, so joining a preview does not guarantee immediate access (Preview requirements).
Do you need Google Health Premium?
Google Health Premium replaced Fitbit Premium on May 19, 2026. Google lists it at $9.99 monthly or $99 annually in the U.S.; paying monthly for 12 months would total $119.88. Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers can receive Health Premium at no additional charge, but a compatible Fitbit or Pixel Watch and other eligibility requirements still apply (Google Health Coach announcement; subscription support).

How to turn it on
- Update the Fitbit app from Google Play or the Apple App Store when the Google Health update is offered.
- Open the renamed app and sign in with a Google Account. Follow the prompt to migrate an older Fitbit account if required.
- Pair a compatible Fitbit or Pixel Watch and allow it to sync.
- Open Google Health and look for Google Health Coach or the relevant coaching feature.
- Subscribe to Google Health Premium or activate an eligible trial if the feature requires Premium.
- Review the optional consent for advanced AI-personalized insights.
- Connect Health Connect, Apple Health or other supported sources only if you want their data included.
- If a feature is missing, check the app’s Public Preview or “What’s new” area; staged rollout can delay access.
Privacy and medical-safety limits
The personalization is only as broad as the data you connect. More sources can provide richer context, but they also increase the amount of sensitive information handled across accounts and services.
- Google says you can choose what data to save, turn optional features on or off, delete data and remove access shared with Health Coach.
- Google says Fitbit health and wellness data will not be used for Google Ads. That statement does not mean the data is never processed or stored.
- Advanced AI personalization requires the relevant feature to be available and your necessary consent.
- Google says Health Coach is not intended for medical purposes and that responses may be inaccurate or inappropriate (Google’s safety guidance).
Do not use it to diagnose an illness, change medication, interpret an emergency or override a clinician’s instructions. Check the dates and measurements behind an answer, and contact a healthcare professional for symptoms, abnormal readings or urgent concerns.
Common problems and fixes
The app still says Fitbit
Check the Play Store or App Store for an update, confirm your phone meets Google’s app requirements and allow time for the staged rollout. Do not delete and reinstall unless Google support tells you to.

Health Coach does not appear
Check your country, language, age, paired device, Google Health Premium status, preview enrollment and AI-personalization consent. A gradual rollout can leave an eligible account without the feature temporarily.
Your Fitbit account will not connect
Sign in with a Google Account and complete the migration prompt. Google requires this transition for users still using Fitbit-account credentials in the old flow.
The advice looks wrong or data is missing
Review wear time, sync dates and connected-app permissions. Incomplete data can produce generic or misleading insights. Use the feedback controls for preview responses, but seek professional advice rather than relying on a questionable recommendation.
Is it worth using?
| Reader | Likely fit |
|---|---|
| Existing Fitbit or Pixel Watch owner who wants explanations and plans | Strongest case, especially with Premium or bundled Google AI Pro/Ultra access. |
| User who only wants steps, heart rate and basic sleep summaries | May not justify a recurring Premium fee. |
| Person uncomfortable connecting sensitive health data | Use only with optional integrations disabled, or skip the coaching layer. |
| Anyone seeking diagnosis or treatment | Not an appropriate use. |
| Athlete focused on training load and recovery | Compare Fitbit’s approach with Garmin or WHOOP before switching ecosystems. |
| User who prefers a discreet ring | Compare Oura’s ring-based sleep and recovery approach rather than treating it as the same product. |
For existing Google wearable owners, the meaningful upgrade is interpretation rather than a new sensor: Health Coach can connect trends, goals and logs in a way ordinary dashboards do not. The trade-offs are the Premium fee, Google-account dependence, staged previews and the possibility of confident-sounding but wrong advice. Treat it as a wellness assistant, not a clinician.
