In September 2024, Google acknowledged that some original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 owners were left with a blank screen after installing Wear OS 5. Google paused the rollout on September 26 while it worked on a resolution. The evidence supports describing this as a possible software soft brick—not proof that every affected watch was permanently damaged.
If your watch is stuck, Google’s recovery instructions start with a restart and progress to Fastboot recovery and a factory reset. A reset erases data stored on the watch, and it is not guaranteed to fix every device.
What happened to Pixel Watches during the Wear OS 5 update?
Google began rolling out Wear OS 5 to the original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 in September 2024. Some owners reported that their watches became stuck on a blank screen or otherwise unusable after the update. Google acknowledged the issue and paused the rollout on September 26, 2024, saying it was working on a resolution. Google’s announcement referred to devices upgrading from Wear OS 3.5 or Wear OS 4.0.
Contemporary reporting described the affected devices as soft-bricked. That term means the watch cannot boot or operate normally, but may still be recoverable through software recovery. It does not establish that the watch suffered permanent hardware damage. 9to5Google reported Google’s confirmation of the pause; reporting also indicated that most users were not affected. TechRadar covered the rollout and reported symptoms.

Which models were included—and what the reports do not establish
The confirmed scope of this particular rollout problem is the original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 upgrading to Wear OS 5. The announcement does not establish that Pixel Watch 3 or later models were affected by this incident, nor that every first- or second-generation watch was at risk.
Reports described more than one symptom: a blank or black screen, a Bluetooth symbol, a Google-logo hang or boot loop, pairing failure, or an unresponsive display. These symptoms do not identify the cause by themselves. A black screen can also result from a charging problem, hardware damage, or a different software failure.

What to do if your Pixel Watch is stuck
These are Google’s current support procedures for watches that are blank, frozen, unresponsive, or unable to pair. They are recovery options, not a guarantee that a watch affected by the 2024 rollout will recover. Start with the least destructive step your watch allows.
1. Charge the watch and try a normal restart
Place the watch on its official charger and allow it to charge. If you can use the screen, press and hold the crown for about three seconds, scroll down, then tap Restart.

- The Google Pixel Watch 4 is a stunning display of precision craftsmanship, with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant, Google’s longest-lasting battery, and comprehensive tools for next-level health and fitness performance[1,2,3,4]
- See it all and do the most with the Actua 360 domed display; it’s 10% larger and 50% brighter than Pixel Watch 3, and as durable as ever with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass[1]
- The Google Pixel Watch 4 has Gemini built in[4]; just ask questions and your ultra capable AI assistant will deliver quick responses for personalized help; and stay connected when you’re texting with AI-powered quick replies that are hyper-relevant[5,6]
- Get up to 30 hours of battery life or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode[3]; plus, the new side charging dock gives you 15 hours of battery in 15 minutes or less[7]
- Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]
2. Force a restart if the screen is frozen
Press and hold the crown and side button together for approximately 35 seconds, or until the Google “G” logo appears. Wait for the restart to finish; Google notes it can take longer than the nominal hold time. The Pixel Watch has no physical reset button: do not put a pin or other object into the microphone hole or charging-pin openings.
3. Factory-reset from the watch or phone app
If the watch responds to touch, open Settings > Disconnect & reset and confirm with OK. If the watch is still visible in the phone app, open the Google Pixel Watch app and choose System > Reset and unpair watch, then follow the prompts to pair it again. Both routes erase watch data. Google’s pairing and reset troubleshooting covers the app route.

- Google Pixel Watch has a beautiful circular, domed design and new experience with Wear OS by Google, so it’s easy to get help at a glance
- Stay on top of activity, calories burned, and more with Fitbit activity tracking
- Track your heart rate and get insight into your sleep
- Save time with things like Google Wallet for contactless payments, turn-by-turn directions using Maps, and event notifications from Calendar
- Stay connected and productive wherever you go; respond to messages, manage your inbox, and make calls right from your wrist
4. Use Fastboot recovery if ordinary controls fail
- Press and hold the crown and side button for about 20 seconds, until the Google logo appears.
- As soon as the logo appears, tap the upper-left and lower-right edges of the display at the same time. The watch should enter Fastboot mode.
- Press the side button to scroll to Recovery Mode, then press the crown.
- When No Command appears, press and hold the crown while swiping up on the display.
- In the recovery menu, highlight Wipe Data or Factory Reset and swipe right to reset.
- When the wipe finishes, select Reboot system now, then reconnect the watch to the phone.
Google’s Pixel Watch reset and recovery instructions warn that a reset erases apps, settings, and data stored on the watch. Afterward, setup may require the most recent PIN or Google Account credentials associated with the device.
5. If pairing still fails after a reset
Google’s troubleshooting steps are to uninstall the Pixel Watch app from the phone, forget any listed watch devices in the phone’s connected-device settings, restart the phone, keep it close to the watch, and try pairing again. If the watch will not charge, show a logo, enter Fastboot, or complete recovery, contact Google Pixel Watch support rather than trying undocumented flashing procedures.

What a reset can—and cannot—recover
A factory reset removes apps, settings, and data held locally on the watch. A Google Account backup may shorten setup, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed full copy of the watch. Health and fitness records that had already synced to Fitbit or a Google account may still be available; unsynced data stored only on the watch may be lost. LTE settings, apps, tiles, notifications, and health permissions may need to be set up again.
Google publishes Pixel Watch factory-image documentation and full OTA images. These are advanced recovery resources, not a default consumer repair route. Google warns that installing a factory image erases data and that bootloader unlocking reduces security. The OTA documentation says a full OTA can in most cases be sideloaded without a data wipe or bootloader unlock, but it does not provide a universal repair procedure for every unusable watch.
When to contact Google—and what to prepare
Contact Google if the watch remains unusable after the documented steps, particularly if it cannot charge, display a logo, enter Fastboot, or finish recovery. Do not assume that a replacement or free repair is guaranteed: outcomes can depend on your country, warranty status, purchase date, physical condition, Google’s assessment of the failure, and replacement availability.
- Record the watch’s symptoms and the steps you tried; photograph any error screen if possible.
- Have the serial number, proof of purchase, and purchase date ready.
- Note whether the issue began during or after the Wear OS 5 update.
- Keep the Google support case number and any correspondence.
What Google did not confirm
Google did not publish a failure rate, identify a precise technical root cause, say that every Pixel Watch 1 or 2 was affected, or establish that affected devices had been permanently physically damaged. The available material also does not establish a universal free-replacement program. Those limits matter: the acknowledged blank-screen issue was real, but claims beyond that should not be treated as confirmed facts.

Is this a current Pixel Watch outage?
No new mass-bricking event is established by the cited material. This was a historical Wear OS 5 rollout problem from September 2024. Google’s support page remains useful for blank, frozen, or pairing-failed watches, but its continuing availability does not show that a new widespread failure is happening in 2026. Google’s Pixel Watch security bulletin archive is separate from a confirmation of this specific update failure.
