It has since expanded beyond its original U.S.-and-Android launch and moved into Google’s broader Google Health experience. The coach can interpret permitted Fitbit data, suggest workouts and sleep habits, and answer wellness questions; it is not a diagnostic tool or a substitute for medical care.
Some preview features became available to people without a paid plan, while Google says features including Ask Coach and personalized fitness plans remain tied to Google Health Premium. Access can still vary by country, language, platform, account and rollout.
What launched—and what it is called now
The October 2025 release combined two changes: a redesigned Fitbit app and a Gemini-built Personal Health Coach. Google described the coach as a fitness, sleep and general wellness guide, while the app reorganized health information around views including Today, Fitness, Sleep and Health. It was more than a chatbot added to the old dashboard: the redesign also emphasized plans, trends, visualizations and contextual insights. Google’s Public Preview announcement explains the original experience.
In May 2026, Google introduced the Google Health app and Google Health Coach, positioning them as the next stage of the Fitbit health experience. Google said the new experience would become publicly available on May 19, 2026, and that Fitbit Premium would take the name Google Health Premium. Existing Fitbit users were to receive the new app experience automatically; Google Fit users were expected to begin migrating later in 2026. Those announcements describe a transition in the app and service, not the disappearance of Fitbit devices or their data. Google’s Google Health announcement sets out the change.

What the coach can do
Build and adjust fitness plans
Google says the coach can use a person’s goals, preferences, available equipment and schedule to suggest workouts and weekly targets. The April 2026 update described personalized weekly plans, tailored workouts, step-by-step guidance and targets that can be adjusted when circumstances change. Users can give feedback or update constraints such as schedule or injury context; that does not make a suggested plan medically cleared. Google’s April update describes these functions.
Connect sleep, activity and recovery
The coach can offer sleep-quality and sleep-consistency insights, relate sleep patterns to activity and recovery, and suggest changes to routines such as bedtime. Google also introduced a revised Sleep Score intended to make its components easier to understand. In March 2026, Google reported a 15% increase in sleep-staging accuracy for Public Preview users. That is Google’s own reported improvement, not independent clinical validation of sleep stages or a guarantee for every device or user. Google’s March update provides the claim and context.
Answer questions about tracked data and general wellness
Ask Coach can respond to questions about a user’s own trends—such as activity, sleep, heart rate, HRV or weight—and explain what certain metrics mean. Google’s examples also include general questions about nutrition, menopause, prediabetes and preparing for a doctor’s visit. Answers are wellness information, not an assessment of symptoms or individualized medical care. Google’s preview announcement includes examples of questions users can ask.

Surface insights without a prompt
The coach may also send contextual updates rather than waiting for a question. Google has described morning messages, post-workout summaries, and end-of-day or end-of-week updates appearing in the app. The purpose is to connect recent activity and other permitted information to a suggested next step; the message should be treated as a prompt to review the underlying data, not as proof of a health problem.

During 2026, Google added or announced features involving cycle-health logging and insights, mood and mindfulness tracking, a Resilience stress-management score, and nutrition and water logging. Nutrition tools include calorie targets and personalized macronutrient ranges. Availability and subscription requirements differ by feature and account; Google’s March 31 feature update describes the additions.
Google also announced preview-stage work involving U.S. medical records, including lab results, medications and visit history, and continuous glucose monitor data through Health Connect. Those integrations were described as rollout or preview developments, not as universally available capabilities. Do not assume your account can connect a record or glucose monitor just because Google announced the feature. Details are in Google’s March 17 update.

Is the coach free, or does it require a subscription?
It depends on the feature. Google initially limited the preview to eligible adult Fitbit Premium subscribers in the United States. By March 2026, it said users without Premium could join the Public Preview for health, fitness and sleep tracking, while Premium retained features such as Ask Coach and custom fitness plans. Google subsequently renamed Fitbit Premium Google Health Premium. Its May announcement listed plans starting at $9.99 per month or $99 per year and said Premium is bundled with Google AI Pro and Ultra tiers. Because Google has expanded features in stages and changed the product name, an announcement does not ensure that every function is active for every subscriber. Check the feature details in your app and the current Google Health Premium terms for your account.
Where is it available, and what do you need?
The original preview was limited to eligible adults in the U.S. using Android. Google later expanded English-language access to six markets—the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore—and added iOS access there. In April 2026, Google announced a broader expansion to 37 countries and 32 languages. That is not the same as worldwide availability: access is staged, and a user’s country, language, age, platform and account can affect eligibility.

The experience was designed for existing Fitbit trackers, Fitbit smartwatches and Pixel Watches; a new device is not necessarily required. The measurements available depend on the hardware generation and sensors, however, and not every device records every metric. The initial product description also identified Health Connect and Apple HealthKit as possible sources for supported data, but integrations and permissions can vary. Google’s original product description covers the intended device and data context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to find it in the app
The original Fitbit Public Preview enrollment instructions were specific to the 2025 interface and should not be treated as a guaranteed current Google Health menu path. Google’s transition announcement said existing Fitbit users would receive the new app experience automatically. If the coach or a particular feature is missing, use this check rather than relying on an old menu label:
- Update the Fitbit and Google Health apps through your device’s official app store.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the Google account associated with your wearable and subscription.
- Open the app and look for its health-coach or coach area, or an eligibility prompt. Labels can change as the interface evolves.
- Check your Google Health Premium status if you are looking for a feature Google lists as paid, such as Ask Coach or custom plans.
- Confirm your country, language, age and device meet the feature’s stated eligibility conditions.
- If the feature has been announced for your market but does not appear, restart the app and allow for a staged account rollout. Contact Google or Fitbit support if you believe your account qualifies and access remains unavailable.
During the original preview, a secondary report documented this path: Fitbit app → profile picture → Public Preview → Join Public Preview. It was a 2025 instruction and may no longer match the current app. Droid Life’s original enrollment report.

What information does the coach use?
Depending on the device, permissions and features enabled, the coach may draw on Fitbit or Pixel Watch activity, sleep, heart rate, HRV, weight, cardio and fitness measures, and logged workouts. It may also use nutrition, water, mood, mindfulness or cycle entries; connected Health Connect or HealthKit information where supported; and goals, preferences, equipment, schedule or circumstances the user provides. Medical-record or glucose data should be considered available only where the relevant integration has actually been offered and authorized.
Recommendations can only be as useful as the input. Inconsistent wear, sparse sleep or workout history, an inaccurate manual log, or missing context such as an injury can change what the coach suggests. Check which data source and permissions are active before treating an answer as tailored to your situation.
Privacy, safety and medical limits
Google’s original disclaimer described the preview as intended for general wellness and fitness, not as a medical device. The coach can help organize information or prepare questions for a clinician, but it should not diagnose a symptom, direct medication changes, interpret an emergency, or replace professional care. Do not follow an aggressive training recommendation after illness or injury without appropriate professional advice, and do not treat wearable readings as clinical measurements. Google’s product announcement includes the wellness limitation.
Google says it evaluated the coach for safety, helpfulness, accuracy, relevance and personalization, including more than 100,000 hours of human evaluation with generalists and specialists in areas such as fitness, family medicine, sleep and behavioral science. That is a company-reported evaluation effort, not evidence that every answer is correct or clinically validated. Sensor accuracy, the AI’s interpretation and real-world usefulness are separate questions. Treat an answer as a starting point, verify important claims, and contact a clinician for medical decisions. Health data is sensitive. Before connecting another source, review the permissions requested by the app and the controls available for connected devices, Health Connect or HealthKit, medical records, conversation history, data export or deletion. Also consider whether health notifications appear on a shared or unlocked screen and whether other people can access the Google account. The precise handling of every conversation or integration should be checked in the applicable Google privacy information; it should not be assumed identical across Google services.
Is it a good fit?
It may be useful if
- You already use a Fitbit or Pixel Watch and want explanations alongside charts and scores.
- You value flexible workout planning and are willing to supply goals and constraints.
- You want sleep, activity and recovery trends considered together rather than viewed separately.
- You are comfortable with an evolving service and with connecting relevant health data.
- You already have Google Health Premium or a bundle that includes it and value the paid coaching features.
It may be a poor fit if
- You need diagnosis, treatment or clinically dependable interpretation of symptoms.
- You need advanced sport analytics or a mature, specialist training platform.
- You do not want a recurring subscription for conversational coaching or custom plans.
- You require offline operation, guaranteed feature parity across platforms, or access in an unsupported market.
- You are uncomfortable providing an AI service with sensitive health context.
The trade-off is convenience and integration against subscription boundaries, changing availability and less visibility into the assumptions behind a conversational answer. A user can improve personalization by sharing goals and constraints, but should share only data they are comfortable connecting. For comparison, the relevant category depends on the need: Apple Health and Apple Watch suit users invested in Apple; Garmin is a common choice for sports metrics; Oura emphasizes ring-based sleep and recovery; WHOOP centers on strain and recovery; and Samsung Health serves the Galaxy ecosystem. Those are category distinctions, not a claim that one platform is universally better.
