The Samsung Gear S2 is a 2015 Tizen smartwatch; the Gear S2 Classic shares its core hardware but uses a more traditional stainless-steel watch design. The Classic Bluetooth model, SM-R732, has a 1.2-inch AMOLED display, 4GB of storage, 512MB of RAM and a 250mAh battery. In 2026, the bigger issue is whether it will pair with your phone: Samsung documents important limits for newer Galaxy phones, and Tizen watch-app distribution has ended.
Samsung Gear S2 Classic specs

Standard Gear S2 specs and model numbers
The standard Bluetooth Gear S2 and Bluetooth Classic share the main platform: a circular 1.2-inch Super AMOLED display at 360 × 360, dual-core 1GHz Exynos 3250 processor, 4GB storage, 512MB RAM, Tizen-based software, a rotating bezel, wireless charging, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. - SM-R732: Gear S2 Classic Bluetooth/Wi-Fi model covered by Samsung’s U.S. specification page; it has no LTE.
- SM-R720: commonly associated with the standard Bluetooth Gear S2.
- SM-R730, SM-R735 and other regional identifiers: associated with cellular variants in some markets; exact features and carrier support vary.
Check the model number on the watch case or in its settings before buying. Samsung announced U.S. Classic 3G/4G models for AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon, but a cellular-capable watch is not automatically compatible with every carrier or still eligible for activation. See Samsung’s announcement of the U.S. Classic cellular variants.
Gear S2 vs. Gear S2 Classic
| Feature | Gear S2 | Gear S2 Classic |
|---|---|---|
| Design | Sportier, more contemporary appearance | Traditional watch styling |
| Construction and supplied band | Sport-oriented construction and band | Stainless-steel case and leather band on the Bluetooth model |
| Rotating bezel | Yes | Yes |
| Display and core platform | Same general 1.2-inch, 360 × 360 AMOLED class and processor/storage platform | Same general platform; see the SM-R732 specifications above |
| Battery | Model-dependent; Bluetooth version generally has 250mAh | 250mAh on Bluetooth SM-R732 |
| Cellular models | Available in selected variants | Separate 3G/4G variants existed |
The Classic is principally a styling and materials choice, not a performance upgrade. The Classic’s supplied 20mm strap specification applies to SM-R732; case-specific fittings can affect whether a replacement band sits neatly. Samsung later offered rose-gold-plated and platinum Classic editions. Those U.S. editions were announced on February 11, 2016, at a launch price of $449.99—a historical price, not a current market value. Details are in Samsung’s 2016 announcement.
Display, bezel and design
The circular AMOLED screen and rotating bezel are the Gear S2 family’s defining design features. Turning the bezel navigates menus and selections without requiring every interaction to happen on the touchscreen. The Classic Bluetooth model combines that interface with a stainless-steel case, Gorilla Glass 3 and leather strap. Its original IP68 rating indicates dust and water resistance under the rating’s test conditions; it does not mean waterproof, and it cannot establish the condition of seals on a decade-old used watch.

Sensors, fitness and connectivity
The Classic Bluetooth model has a heart-rate sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, ambient-light sensor and barometer. Samsung lists S Health and Nike+ Running among the watch’s services. It can track activity and heart rate, handle notifications and use its microphone and input options for replies, but its sensor set and software predate newer features such as ECG, blood-oxygen analysis, sleep-apnea detection and Samsung Health Monitor.

- No built-in GPS: Samsung lists no GPS for SM-R732. Do not buy it expecting standalone location tracking for runs.
- No cellular on SM-R732: this Bluetooth model depends on a paired phone for connected functions.
- NFC is not a payment guarantee: NFC hardware does not establish that Samsung Pay/Wallet can still be installed or used.
- No storage expansion: the 4GB is internal storage, with no microSD slot.
Battery and charging
The SM-R732 has a 250mAh non-removable battery and charges on a wireless dock. Because the Gear S2 dates to 2015, a used unit’s battery condition matters more than its original capacity: battery aging can substantially reduce runtime, and booting successfully does not prove that the battery will last through a normal day. Confirm the dock is included and works; do not assume an ordinary Qi pad will charge the watch.
Does the Gear S2 work with current phones?
Samsung’s compatibility guidance is model- and operating-system-specific. The listed Android requirements are not a guarantee that every phone with Bluetooth will complete setup, and a watch that powers on may still fail to pair after a reset.

Android phones
Samsung lists Gear S2 Classic support with Samsung phones running Android 4.3 through Android 13 and at least 1.5GB of RAM. For non-Samsung Android phones, Samsung lists Android 4.4 or later and at least 1.5GB of RAM for Gear S2-family devices; some features may be limited. Samsung Pay features are restricted to Samsung smartphones. Check the exact phone and current requirements in Samsung’s wearable-device compatibility guide before purchasing.
Newer Galaxy phones
Samsung says Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic are not compatible with Galaxy phones released with Android 14, including the Galaxy S24 family; its compatibility and troubleshooting pages also identify newer Galaxy models such as the S25 as incompatible. The precise documented scope matters: do not infer that every Android 14 phone has the same outcome, but do not assume a newer Galaxy phone will work either. Check Samsung’s Galaxy S24 compatibility troubleshooting page and the current compatibility guide for the exact handset.
iPhone
Samsung’s compatibility guide lists iPhone 5 or later running iOS 9 or later as compatible historically. It does not support iPad or iPod touch, and Samsung notes that connections with iPhone 6S/6S Plus may be unstable on iOS 10 and later. These original requirements are not a promise that the needed Galaxy Wearable app remains obtainable or that a used watch will pair with a current iPhone. Treat iPhone use as conditional, not a safe assumption.

Apps, updates and Samsung Pay
Samsung Developer states that distribution of Tizen-based watch apps has been discontinued. Samsung’s regional service notice also warns that apps, including Samsung Pay/Wallet, can no longer be downloaded on Tizen devices in that region; already-installed apps may continue to work temporarily, but that is not a dependable basis for buying a watch. Read the Tizen device compatibility and app-distribution notice and the Samsung Spain Tizen service notice for their stated scope.
Samsung still hosts specifications and product support material, but that is different from active app distribution, current-phone compatibility or ongoing platform support. A Gear S2 can remain useful for timekeeping and basic functions when successfully paired; it is a poor choice if current apps, payments or continued software support are essential.
Is the Gear S2 Classic worth buying now?
It may suit someone who already has a compatible older Android phone, wants a traditional-looking watch for basic notifications, and finds a tested unit at a very low price. It is not a sensible general-purpose smartwatch purchase for someone who needs modern-phone compatibility, GPS, reliable cellular service, current health features, payment support or a functioning app ecosystem.

Before committing, compare the total cost with alternatives chosen for the actual use case: a newer Galaxy Watch for compatible Android users seeking current software, an Apple Watch for an iPhone owner, a Garmin for GPS and fitness priorities, or a basic tracker for steps and heart rate. Check phone compatibility first; no one alternative fits every phone and budget.
Quick Recap
What to check before buying used
- Identify the exact model: read the number on the back of the case or original packaging. Confirm whether it is Bluetooth SM-R732 or a cellular variant.
- Verify your phone: check the exact phone model and Android/iOS version against Samsung’s compatibility guidance before paying.
- Test setup: if possible, have the seller factory-reset the watch and complete pairing with your phone. A watch that only boots has not passed this test.
- Inspect and exercise controls: test the screen, touchscreen, buttons, rotating bezel, Bluetooth connection and heart-rate readings.
- Test charging and runtime: confirm the dedicated dock works, then observe battery drain over several hours rather than relying on a brief power-on demonstration.
- Inspect the case and seals: look for cracks, corrosion or signs the watch has been opened. Its original IP68 rating does not verify aged seals.
- Confirm accessories: make sure the charger is included; for a replacement band, confirm the width and case-end fit rather than assuming every 20mm strap will fit cleanly.
- Do not pay extra for unverified functions: test NFC payments, cellular activation or app availability on your phone and network before treating them as usable features.
