The five standout gangster-film watches are Tony Montana’s probably identified Omega La Magique in Scarface; Sam “Ace” Rothstein’s Bueche Girod and Piaget Polo in Casino; Neil McCauley’s digital Timex Stealth in Heat; Tony Soprano’s Rolex Day-Date President in The Sopranos; and Frank Sheeran’s rectangular gold Mathey-Tissot in The Irishman. Their importance is less about proving what criminals wear than showing how costume departments use a watch to signal restraint, status, discipline or sentiment.
Watch identification in films is rarely as certain as a clean product shot. A brief glimpse, a reflective crystal or a partially hidden dial can make a reference only a likely attribution. The examples below therefore distinguish visual consensus from firm identification.
The five watches at a glance
| Character | Film | Watch | Identification confidence | What it communicates |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tony Montana | Scarface (1983) | Omega La Magique, likely | Popular consensus, not confirmed | Extreme wealth expressed through unusual restraint |
| Sam “Ace” Rothstein | Casino (1995) | Bueche Girod; red-dial Piaget Polo | Identified by visual attribution | Jewelry-like opulence and integrated luxury |
| Neil McCauley | Heat (1995) | Digital Timex Stealth | Strong visual identification | Efficiency, anonymity and emotional distance |
| Tony Soprano | The Sopranos (1999–2007) | Rolex Day-Date President, ref. 118238; champagne dial | Generally identified; Submariner also appears | A single status signal against an ordinary wardrobe |
| Frank Sheeran | The Irishman (2019) | Rectangular gold Mathey-Tissot with gem-set bezel | Visual attribution tied to the real person | Gift, loyalty and memory rather than flash alone |
The central source for these five is Luke Benedictus’s 2021 feature in Time+Tide. It is best read as informed watch-spotting, not a production inventory.
Tony Montana: the probably identified Omega La Magique in Scarface
What watch does Tony Montana wear in Scarface? The usual answer is an Omega La Magique, but this is the least certain identification among the five. Time+Tide calls it the “popular consensus” and notes continuing conjecture about the watch.

Why the watch fits Montana
The reported La Magique is an exceptionally thin, gold dress watch: Time+Tide describes a 1982 18k-gold model with Omega calibre 1357, a 2.6 mm case and a stated production run of 261 pieces. Those specifications and the production figure are reported by that article, rather than independently verified here. The visual joke is powerful: Montana’s clothes, cars and behavior are extravagant, while the watch is almost deliberately discreet.
Identification and a modern analogue
Because the film view does not settle the model beyond doubt, it should be described as a likely La Magique, not a confirmed screen-used production record. A collector seeking the same effect should look for an ultra-thin gold dress watch; no current stock or exact substitute is established by the cited evidence.
Sam “Ace” Rothstein: two different kinds of luxury in Casino
Ace is the clearest example of a character whose watches change with the costume moment. In the scene before the car explosion, Time+Tide identifies an ultra-slim, tri-colour 18k-gold Bueche Girod set with 38 pavé diamonds. The more prominent watch elsewhere is a red-dial Piaget Polo.
Bueche Girod: jewelry on the wrist
The Bueche Girod’s mixed gold and diamond setting reads like a bracelet or piece of fine jewelry before it reads as a timekeeper. That conspicuous detail suits Ace’s public persona as a casino executive who wants wealth to be visible.

Time+Tide dates the Polo design to 1979 and quotes designer Yves G. Piaget: “the entire Polo philosophy can be summed up in one sentence: it’s a watch bracelet rather than a mere wristwatch”. The red dial and integrated bracelet make the watch luxurious without relying solely on loose gemstones. Together, Ace’s two watches show display in two forms: pavé-set precious metal and a recognizably designed luxury-sport watch.
Both identifications come from visual attribution in the cited article. Exact vintage-market availability was not established, so neither should be presented with a current price or guaranteed source.

Neil McCauley: the digital Timex Stealth in Heat
What watch does Robert De Niro wear in Heat? De Niro plays Neil McCauley, whose watch is identified as a digital Timex Stealth.
Function over status
Unlike the gold watches elsewhere in this list, the Stealth is a practical digital instrument. Its uncluttered, no-frills appearance reinforces McCauley’s planning, self-control and emotional separation. The watch does not advertise success; it helps him remain focused and anonymous.

A simple digital Timex is the most accessible style analogue in this group. That means a watch with a plain digital display and utilitarian case, not a claim that a particular current model is the exact movie prop. Check the specific listing and dimensions before buying, since the film identification does not establish present-day stock.
Rank #4
Tony Soprano: Rolex Day-Date President, champagne dial
What watch does Tony Soprano wear? He is occasionally seen with a Rolex Submariner, but Time+Tide says his usual watch is a Rolex Day-Date President, reference 118238, with a champagne dial.
A status accent, not a costume stereotype
The Day-Date carries unmistakable prestige, yet it sits against Tony’s deliberately ordinary, believable clothing. Costume designer Juliet Polcsa is quoted in Time+Tide saying, “David [Chase] was very clear that he wanted these characters to be true to life, no stereotypes,” and that “Tony was still a bit of an everyman, so being flashy would take the viewer out of that. His suits did get better though. Mostly because I found a better tailor.” The watch therefore works as a controlled status accent rather than a caricature’s prop.
Identification limits
The Day-Date identification is the general attribution for Tony’s watch, while the Submariner appearances explain why an isolated still can produce a different answer. The distinction matters: “Tony Soprano wears a Rolex” is safe, but treating every scene as the same reference is not.
Best Value
Frank Sheeran: the gold Mathey-Tissot in The Irishman
Frank Sheeran’s watch is described by Time+Tide as a rectangular gold Mathey-Tissot with a gem-set bezel, presented as a gift from Jimmy Hoffa. It is paired with Sheeran’s diamond-set 14k-gold ring.
When a watch carries a relationship
This is not simply a display of money. The watch functions as a physical reminder of Hoffa and of Sheeran’s loyalties. Time+Tide reports that both pieces belonged to the real Frank Sheeran and relays this sentence from Charles Brandt’s book: “The gold watch Jimmy gave me is still on my wrist, and the gold ring Russell gave me is still on my finger here at the assisted-living home.” The quotation is presented through the article’s account of Brandt’s book, not as a separately checked transcript.
Visual attribution, not a shopping specification
The rectangular case, gold finish and jeweled bezel are the useful visual identifiers. The evidence does not establish a current replacement, price or guaranteed vintage availability.
A useful cross-check: Henry Hill’s watches in Goodfellas
Henry Hill’s watches show why false precision is a problem. A 2022 Hodinkee analysis identifies three watches: a Seiko Quartz SQ, possibly model 7813, worn for much of the film; a yellow-gold Rolex Day-Date seen briefly; and an unidentified square gold watch with a champagne dial on a leather strap.
Hodinkee specifically says it is difficult to tell whether the Seiko has the day-date complication. “Possibly model 7813” is therefore the right level of precision; presenting it as a confirmed reference would overstate what the footage supports.
What these gangster-movie watches communicate
- Gold is not one message. Montana’s thin gold watch is restrained, Ace’s pieces are overtly ornamental, Soprano’s Day-Date is a controlled status marker, and Sheeran’s gold watch is bound to a personal gift.
- Utility can be characterization. McCauley’s digital Timex is deliberately out of step with the precious-metal examples, making discipline and anonymity visible.
- Integrated design changes the kind of luxury. The Piaget Polo’s bracelet-like construction communicates a designed object rather than simply a valuable material.
- Costume works in context. Soprano’s watch only makes sense beside the realistic wardrobe the costume team built around him.
- Identification should be graded. “Likely,” “popular consensus” and “unidentified” are more useful than invented certainty when a film offers only a fleeting view.
These watches are costume and character evidence, not evidence about real-world criminal behavior. Their appeal lies in how a small object can distinguish extravagance from efficiency, public status from private loyalty, and a stereotype from a fully observed character.
