Its 50 mm RLX titanium case is rated by Rolex to 11,000 metres, but that headline depth is far less relevant to most owners than the watch’s scale, lightness relative to its steel predecessor, and the compromises of wearing a purpose-built extreme-diving design every day.
What the Deepsea Challenge is—and what it is not
Rolex presented the production Oyster Perpetual Deepsea Challenge in 2022 as reference 126067. It draws on the experimental watch attached to James Cameron’s submersible during his 2012 Mariana Trench descent. That was a different watch: Rolex says the experimental model was made of 904L steel, while the production version uses RLX titanium.
Rolex’s product page lists the production watch as waterproof to 11,000 metres (36,090 feet). That is a manufacturer rating, not a practical invitation for owners to attempt extreme-depth diving. The watch’s scale and pressure engineering make a more persuasive case as a technical achievement than as a tool most people need.
How deep can the Rolex Deepsea Challenge go?
Rolex states that the Deepsea Challenge is guaranteed waterproof to 11,000 metres (36,090 feet). The company says each watch is pressure-tested with a 25 percent safety margin, at pressure equivalent to 13,750 metres, in a tank developed with Comex. These figures describe Rolex’s own claims and testing process; they are not an independent test result or evidence that the watch should be used at such depths.

For ordinary diving, the useful design details are more grounded: a unidirectional bezel with a 60-minute scale for monitoring dive and decompression time, plus bracelet extensions intended to fit over a diving suit. Rolex does not present the watch as a replacement for dive computers, decompression planning, or other safety equipment.
What RLX titanium changes
Rolex identifies RLX titanium as grade 5 titanium and says the production Deepsea Challenge is 30 percent lighter than the experimental steel watch that inspired it. That is a comparison with the 2012 predecessor, not a general claim that it is 30 percent lighter than another production dive watch.

Reducing weight matters on a watch this large: titanium makes a 50 mm case and bracelet more manageable than the equivalent design in steel might be. It does not make the watch small or discreet. Rolex also attributes corrosion resistance and resistance to deformation to RLX titanium; those are the manufacturer’s material descriptions rather than independently assessed performance here.
How big is it, and what is on the watch?
The defining trade-off is its 50 mm Oyster case. Rolex lists a black Cerachrom ceramic bezel with a unidirectional 60-minute scale, a domed sapphire crystal 9.5 mm thick, and a Triplock screw-down crown. The case uses Ringlock architecture and includes a helium escape valve. A black dial carries Chromalight luminous markers and hands.

The RLX titanium Oyster bracelet closes with an Oysterlock safety clasp. Glidelock adjustment and a Fliplock extension link allow the bracelet to expand over a diving suit up to 7 mm thick, according to Rolex. These are useful features for the intended diving context, but the large case remains the central everyday-wear consideration. Without hands-on fit testing, wrist comfort cannot be assumed from the material choice alone.
Movement, accuracy and power reserve
Inside is Rolex calibre 3230, a self-winding mechanical movement with centre hours, minutes and seconds, stop-seconds, a Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers. Rolex lists approximately 70 hours of power reserve and precision of −2/+2 seconds per day after casing.

The watch is designated a Superlative Chronometer. Rolex describes that designation as combining official chronometer certification with the company’s own certification after casing.

The Deepsea Challenge earns its place as a remarkable production watch: Rolex brought the story and extreme-pressure ambition of an experimental Mariana Trench watch into a titanium model, with a substantial safety-margin test claim and a movement offering a practical reserve. The titanium choice addresses the obvious burden of a 50 mm watch, but cannot erase it.
My view: this is most compelling for someone who wants the scale, engineering and deep-ocean lineage as much as the watch itself. For a buyer seeking an uncomplicated everyday diver, its 11,000-metre rating is a spectacular excess rather than a decisive advantage. The thing that matters most in daily ownership is likely to be the same thing visible at a glance: it is enormous.
