Oculus Rift works by having a connected Windows PC render separate views for your eyes while the headset’s lenses and software make those views appear three-dimensional. Sensors track your head and controllers so the scene responds to your movement; the original Rift (CV1) used external cameras, while Rift S used cameras built into the headset. Both are discontinued, PC-dependent headsets, so their setup, display, and tracking details differ.
How the Oculus Rift creates a VR scene
The Rift is a coordinated system of a PC, headset, tracking hardware, software, and controllers. The PC renders two perspective-correct views of a virtual scene, one for each eye. The headset’s lenses magnify the images, and software corrects for lens distortion so the scene looks geometrically right through the optics.
Accelerometers and gyroscopes measure headset motion, while optical tracking helps estimate position and correct inertial drift. The software updates the virtual viewpoint as you turn, lean, or move. Stereoscopic depth, responsive perspective, sound, and controller interaction work together to create a sense of presence; no single component produces it alone.
Rift CV1 and Rift S: key differences
| Feature | Rift CV1 | Rift S |
|---|---|---|
| Tracking | External Constellation cameras observe infrared markers on the headset and Touch controllers. | Built-in cameras use Oculus Insight inside-out tracking; separate tracking cameras are generally not needed. |
| Display | Two OLED displays; combined resolution 2160 × 1200; 90 Hz refresh rate. | One LCD panel; 2560 × 1440 total resolution; 80 Hz refresh rate. |
| IPD adjustment | Mechanical adjustment between the lenses. | Software adjustment for the single display. |
| PC connection | Video and USB connections, plus USB connections for external sensors. | DisplayPort and USB 3.0. |
| Setup trade-off | External sensor placement and USB connections add setup work. | Fewer external components, but tracking depends on headset camera visibility and room conditions. |
The figures above are for the consumer CV1 and Rift S, not every development kit or later software configuration. Field-of-view figures vary by measurement method and fit, so a single exact value can be misleading.

How tracking works
Rift CV1: external Constellation tracking
CV1 sensors observe infrared markers built into the headset and Touch controllers. The headset’s inertial sensors measure rotation and movement quickly, while optical observations help determine position and correct drift. One sensor can support basic use; additional sensors can improve coverage for room-scale play, at the cost of more placement and USB considerations.
Rift S: inside-out tracking
Rift S uses cameras mounted on the headset to observe the room and controller tracking patterns. Computer vision combines those observations with inertial data to estimate movement. Tracking can be affected if the cameras are obstructed, the room is poorly lit, or controllers remain outside the cameras’ view.
Touch controllers
Touch controllers provide buttons, sticks, triggers, and tracked hand positions for actions such as pointing, grabbing, and manipulating objects. Capacitive or positional inputs can support some finger gestures, depending on controller generation and software. Haptic motors provide vibration cues, not literal force feedback.
What the PC and software do
Rift headsets are tethered PC VR devices, not standalone or wireless headsets. The PC runs the application, renders the scene, and sends video and audio to the headset. The runtime coordinates tracking, display timing, and input. Techniques such as reprojection or motion compensation can help when an application misses a frame, but cannot make an underpowered PC equivalent to a faster one.

Exact PC, operating-system, driver, and game compatibility depends on the headset and current software. Launch-era minimum specifications should not be treated as current requirements; check compatibility for the specific PC, graphics outputs, and application before buying or troubleshooting.
Setup basics
Original Rift CV1
- Check that the Windows PC and its video and USB ports are compatible with the headset and the VR software you plan to use.
- Install the supported Oculus/Meta PC software or runtime for your setup.
- Connect the headset and external sensor or sensors, avoiding problematic hubs where possible.
- Place sensors with a clear view of the headset and controllers across the intended play area.
- Follow the software’s calibration and play-area steps, then confirm controller tracking.
- Start compatible PC VR software and check that tracking and display work as expected.
Rift S
- Check PC and graphics-output compatibility, then connect DisplayPort and USB 3.0 directly to the PC where possible.
- Install the appropriate PC VR software and supported graphics drivers.
- Complete the boundary or play-area setup and keep the headset cameras unobstructed.
- Use reasonably consistent lighting, pair the Touch controllers, and confirm tracking during setup.
Common problems and safety
- No display: Check the video connection, cable seating, adapter compatibility, graphics driver, and whether the headset is connected to a supported discrete GPU output.
- USB errors: Try another USB 3.x port, avoid problematic hubs, and check whether the PC recognizes the headset.
- CV1 tracking loss: Check sensor placement, line of sight, sensor cables, and USB connections.
- Rift S tracking loss: Improve lighting, clear obstructions from the headset cameras, and bring controllers back into their view.
- Stutter or discomfort: Reduce graphics settings, check frame timing, and look for driver, thermal, or background-load issues.
Rift S uses a proprietary headset cable arrangement; do not assume a generic USB-C or DisplayPort cable will replace it. Used replacement listings require careful compatibility checks, and availability may be limited. VR can cause eyestrain, nausea, disorientation, or loss of balance. Clear the play area, take breaks, and stop if symptoms develop; avoid playing near stairs or hazards.
Rank #4
- Experience More Games: The Kuject link cable connects for Quest 3/2 or a Pico Neo 4 to PC and lets you play all Rift S and Steam VR games. It compatible for meta quest 3 link cable, allowing you to explore a broader virtual world
- Better compatibility: With the extra USB-A adapter, it can be compatible with a variety of computers and laptops with USB A or USB C ports. We do not recommend playing while charging with this cable, as computer ports usually only provide a maximum of 2A current

The 8mm flexible TPU material allows our connecting cable to bend freely without breaking. Additionally, we offer friendly customer service to ensure a smooth experience using this cable
Is Oculus Rift still worth considering?
Meta announced that Rift S sales would end in 2021 and described a shift toward standalone headsets. Rift and Rift S are now legacy, used-market hardware, though existing owners may still use them with compatible PC software. Before buying used, check condition, cable availability, software and game compatibility, and whether the specific PC meets current needs.
CV1 may appeal to someone who wants its 90 Hz dual-OLED design and accepts external sensors. Rift S is simpler to set up and has a higher-resolution display, but its proprietary cable is a replacement risk. For a new buyer seeking Meta PC VR, a current Quest headset with wired or wireless PC streaming is the more future-facing choice. Rift S is Meta’s last PC-only headset, and the company has continued its broader focus on Quest and PC streaming.

FAQ
Is Oculus Rift standalone or wireless?
No. Rift CV1 and Rift S depend on a connected PC for rendering and are tethered headsets.
What is the difference between Rift CV1 and Rift S tracking?
CV1 uses external Constellation cameras to observe infrared markers. Rift S uses cameras on the headset for inside-out Oculus Insight tracking.
Can a Quest Link cable replace a Rift S cable?
Do not assume so. Rift S uses a proprietary cable arrangement, and generic USB-C, DisplayPort, or Quest Link cables should not be treated as compatible replacements.
Is Oculus Rift discontinued?
Yes. Meta said Rift S sales would end in 2021 and shifted its hardware focus toward standalone headsets. Existing Rift devices may still work with compatible PC software, but buyers should check current compatibility and replacement-part availability.
