To lock a Galaxy Watch6 or Watch6 Classic, open Settings → Security and privacy → Lock type, choose PIN or Pattern, then enter it again to confirm. Samsung Wallet requires a screen lock on the watch, so keep one enabled if you use watch payments. Menu wording can vary by region, carrier and software version.
What the lock does—and what it does not
A watch lock adds a barrier against someone casually opening watch-accessible information and features if they handle a removed or lost watch. It is separate from your paired phone’s lock and does not lock individual apps, encrypt a backup, locate a missing watch, or prevent physical theft. It also does not necessarily ask for authentication every time the display turns off. Samsung describes the lock and its behavior in its Galaxy watch security-lock instructions.
The steps here are for the Wear OS interface on Galaxy Watch6 and Watch6 Classic, including Bluetooth and LTE variants. Samsung notes that screens can differ by provider, phone, watch and software. If your labels differ slightly, look for the security or lock settings; do not substitute the older Tizen path Settings → Lock or a “Payments only” option for the Watch6 procedure.
Set a PIN or pattern
- Wake the watch and open the app screen.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Security and privacy, then Lock type. Some software editions may show a shorter label such as Lock.
- Choose PIN or Pattern.
- Enter the PIN or draw the pattern, then enter or draw it again to confirm.
PIN
A PIN is usually the most practical choice on a small display and is needed for Samsung Wallet. Samsung’s support page describes a four-digit PIN, but do not assume every regional software build has identical requirements; follow the watch’s own prompts.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Pattern
Draw a pattern on the display and choose one that is not an obvious shape. If the option appears, turn off Make pattern visible to avoid showing the trace as you enter it. A pattern may be easier to observe from nearby or infer from screen smudges than a PIN.
Choose the lock that fits your use
| Choice | Practical trade-off | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| PIN | Numeric entry is straightforward on a small screen; Samsung Wallet requires a watch lock. | Most owners, especially people using payments. |
| Pattern | Gesture entry may suit those who prefer it, but it can be observable; hide the pattern trace if the setting is available. | Owners who prefer a gesture and can choose a non-obvious pattern. |
| None | No lock-screen security; Samsung Wallet may stop working on the watch. | Only if you accept the reduced protection and do not need Wallet. |
Neither option should be treated as unbreakable. The useful purpose is limiting casual access after removal or loss, not guaranteeing resistance to every attack.
Hide information while the watch is locked
In the security-lock settings, enable Hide information if available. Samsung says it hides information on the watch face while locked, but the control works only with Samsung-made watch faces. It is not a universal privacy filter for third-party faces or a guarantee that every app will conceal all content after unlocking. If you use a third-party face, check what its complications and notification previews show while the watch is locked.

When the Watch6 locks and why it may ask again
A display timeout and a security lock are different things. The screen can go dark without requiring a PIN at the next wake. After you authenticate, the watch generally stays unlocked while wrist detection recognizes that it is being worn; removing it should trigger a lock. Samsung advises a snug fit because loose contact can make the watch think it has been removed and cause more frequent prompts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThere is no universal per-screen-timeout lock behavior established in Samsung’s Watch6 instructions. Do not assume that the display sleeping means the device has locked, or look for a phone-style “lock at every timeout” control unless it appears on your particular software.
Keep wrist detection enabled
Wrist detection helps the watch determine whether it is being worn and supports its lock behavior. Keep it on for normal use. Disabling it to avoid entering a PIN weakens the watch’s ability to recognize removal; Samsung’s manual says it should generally be turned off only when the watch has trouble detecting that it is on the wrist.

If it locks while you are still wearing it, try these checks in order:
- Adjust the band so it is snug and the rear sensors maintain skin contact, without making it uncomfortable.
- Clean the rear sensor area and the skin beneath it.
- Check Settings → Security and privacy → Wrist detection.
- Restart the watch and install available watch software updates.
- Try another band if the current one leaves the watch loose. If the issue continues, contact Samsung support rather than permanently removing the lock.
Samsung explains the relationship between fit, wrist detection and repeated unlocking in its security-lock guidance; the Galaxy Watch6 manual is also available from Verizon’s hosted Watch6 manual.

- Open Galaxy Wearable on the paired phone and make sure the watch is connected.
- Tap Watch settings, then Pay.
- Follow the prompts to set or confirm the watch lock and add payment cards.
Samsung’s Wallet setup instructions describe this route for Watch5 and Watch6. Cards must be registered through the paired mobile device; pairing alone does not automatically move cards to the watch. Availability depends on country, bank, card and supported device configuration, so eligibility in Samsung’s US Wallet FAQ should not be generalized to every region.
If Wallet setup will not proceed, confirm that a lock is set, the watch is connected to the paired phone, and the bank and card support Wallet in your region. Also check for available updates to the watch and Galaxy Wearable app. Pairing an existing watch with a new Galaxy phone can reset the watch and require Wallet setup again, according to Samsung’s region-specific FAQ.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Change or remove the lock
Change the lock type
- Open Settings → Security and privacy → Lock type.
- Enter the current PIN or pattern if requested.
- Select the new lock type and enter or draw it twice to confirm.
Remove the lock
- Return to Lock type and authenticate if prompted.
- Select None and confirm.
Removing the lock leaves the watch without lock-screen security and can prevent Samsung Wallet from working. For Wear OS Watch6, Samsung’s instructions describe a general screen lock, not a setting that limits authentication to payments alone.

If you forget the PIN or pattern
Samsung does not document a way to bypass or reset only the forgotten lock. The supported recovery is to reset the watch, which erases its data. Before starting, make sure you know the Samsung account associated with the watch and the Google account previously connected to it; Google-account verification may be requested after reset. Locally stored data cannot be recovered by the reset, and payment cards must be set up again.
Samsung’s documented remote-erasure steps are:
- Open Samsung Find in a web browser and sign in to the Samsung account associated with the watch.
- Select the watch.
- Choose Erase data and confirm.
- After it resets, set up the watch again and complete any requested account verification.
Do not keep guessing if you cannot accept the risk of a lockout or data loss. Samsung’s lock and reset instructions explain the erase process and account check. If Auto factory reset is enabled in the Wear OS lock settings, the watch resets after 20 failed unlock attempts; that is destructive, not a forgotten-PIN shortcut, and may also require Google verification. It is distinct from erasing the watch remotely.
If the watch is lost or stolen
- Use Samsung’s device-finding tools to try to locate it.
- If recovery seems unlikely or sensitive information is at risk, use Samsung Find to erase it remotely.
- Contact the card issuer if payment credentials or cards may have been exposed.
Remote erasure is not a guarantee of recovery and does not protect the watch before the erase command takes effect. It is an erase action, not a way to unlock the watch remotely.
