Can You Use a Samsung Galaxy Watch with a Non-Samsung Phone?

Most Galaxy Watches work with compatible non-Samsung Android phones, but advanced Samsung health features are restricted—and current models do not pair with iPhones.

Yes, most Galaxy Watches can pair with compatible non-Samsung Android phones—but not every feature comes along. Recent Wear OS models work with many Pixel, OnePlus, Motorola and other Android phones that meet the model’s requirements and include Google Mobile Services. A current Galaxy Watch4 or newer will not pair with an iPhone. And if you want Samsung Health Monitor features such as ECG or blood-pressure readings, Samsung says you need a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone.

Compatibility at a glance

“Works with Android” means the watch can pair and run many core functions; it does not guarantee that every Samsung feature is available. Requirements also vary by watch generation, phone, region and carrier. Samsung’s [general compatibility guide](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10004668/) and product pages do not always present the newest models’ requirements in identical terms, so confirm the exact combination before buying.

Galaxy Watch family Other Android phones Minimum Android requirement listed by Samsung iPhone compatibility
Watch8 and Watch8 Classic Yes, according to Samsung’s product messaging Verify the exact model and region. Samsung’s Watch8 materials discuss Galaxy Android 12+ while also saying the watch works with other Android phones. No; current Wear OS models are not iPhone-compatible.
Watch7 and Watch Ultra Yes Android 11+ No
Watch FE Yes Android 10+ No
Watch6 and Watch6 Classic Yes Android 8.0+ and at least 1.5 GB RAM No
Watch5 and Watch5 Pro Yes Android 8.0+ and at least 1.5 GB RAM No
Watch4 and Watch4 Classic Yes Android 6.0+ and at least 1.5 GB RAM No
Galaxy Watch (2018), Watch3, Watch Active and Watch Active2 Yes, depending on model and software Samsung lists Android 6.0+ and at least 1.5 GB RAM for non-Samsung Android phones Some models can pair with certain iPhones; check the exact model and iOS requirements.
Older Gear models Mixed; some are not supported on non-Samsung Android phones Model-specific Model-specific

These Android minimums are Samsung’s listed requirements, not a promise that every phone meeting them will work. Samsung notes that support can vary by region, carrier and phone brand. Watch8 buyers in particular should check Samsung’s [Watch8 product page](https://www.samsung.com/us/watches/galaxy-watch8/) and the support page for their precise model.

What your Android phone needs

For a modern Wear OS Galaxy Watch, the phone needs a compatible Android version and Google Mobile Services (GMS). You will also need the Galaxy Wearable app to set up and manage the watch. Samsung’s [Wear OS requirements](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10003348/) make GMS an important prerequisite: a phone without Google services may not complete setup or support required Wear OS components.

  • NEW DESIGN. LIGHTWEIGHT FEEL: Maximize your days with a minimalist design. The sleek, thinner-than-ever silhouette makes Galaxy Watch8 look as good as it functions. With a snug fit and sporty style, it gives you readings without getting in your way.
  • A PERSONAL ASSISTANT, RIGHT ON YOUR WRIST: Your Watch just became your personal assistant.⁴ Stay one step ahead of your day with a watch that helps you navigate your tasks and to-do lists.
  • Android version and memory: Meet the requirement for your specific watch, not a minimum quoted for an older generation.
  • Google Mobile Services: Confirm the phone includes GMS and can use Google Play. This is especially important for some Huawei phones and China-market or modified Android devices.
  • Apps and accounts: Install Galaxy Wearable and Samsung Health. Setup may ask you to sign in to a Samsung account and configure a Google account for Wear OS services.
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth is needed for ordinary pairing. LTE use additionally depends on a supported watch edition, carrier and plan.

Unofficially sideloading apps onto a phone without GMS is not a dependable substitute. It can introduce security risks, stop working after updates or still leave required watch functions unavailable.

How to set up a Galaxy Watch with another Android phone

Samsung’s [Android setup instructions](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10002899/) route pairing through Galaxy Wearable. Use that app rather than trying to pair the watch only from the phone’s Bluetooth menu.

  1. Charge and turn on the watch, then keep it near your phone.
  2. On the phone, open Google Play Store, find Galaxy Wearable and install it.
  3. Open Galaxy Wearable and tap Start or the equivalent setup control.
  4. Select your Galaxy Watch when it appears, then confirm the matching Bluetooth code on both devices.
  5. Follow the prompts to accept terms, grant the permissions you want to use, and sign in to a Samsung account if asked.
  6. Complete any Google account or Wear OS setup prompts. Install or update Samsung Health for fitness tracking.
  7. Let the watch download and install available software updates. If it is an LTE model, follow the carrier activation steps after pairing.
  8. Use the watch’s Play Store to install compatible apps and watch faces. If offered, you can restore settings from an earlier Samsung watch.

Once setup is complete, notifications, many workouts and health metrics, compatible watch apps and faces, and supported calls or message replies are available on many non-Samsung Android phones. The exact behavior can depend on the phone and the apps that send notifications. Samsung describes Wear OS services such as Play Store, Maps, Google Fit, Spotify, calls and messages in its [feature overview](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10003455/).

What usually works—and what may not

Core watch and fitness functions

On a compatible Android phone, expect the basics: Bluetooth pairing, notifications, activity and exercise tracking, heart rate, sleep, stress, GPS workout recording, and—where the watch supports them—blood oxygen or body-composition measurements. Compatible watch faces and Play Store apps are also available. Samsung’s compatibility chart marks many ordinary Samsung Health and app functions as usable with both Samsung and other Android phones.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calls and replies need more qualification. Call alerts generally work, and calls from the watch may work when the watch and phone configuration supports them. You can reply to some notifications, but available replies vary by messaging app and phone. Samsung Health syncing and other app integrations can also depend on account and software compatibility.

Samsung-specific features and integrations

Some functions depend on Samsung apps or a Galaxy phone. Samsung lists limitations for features such as Samsung Reminder, parts of calendar handling, the Email app, some manufacturer-specific controls and certain phone or watch integrations. Gesture controls, camera control, Samsung Find or SmartThings features, and newer ecosystem features may also vary by model, software and region; do not assume every one is either available or unavailable on every non-Samsung phone.

Samsung Wallet is a check-before-you-buy feature. Samsung’s general compatibility guide describes Samsung Pay as Samsung-phone-only, while its separate [Wallet support page](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10002612/) gives watch use requirements that can vary. Availability depends on watch, phone, country, Wallet version and participating bank. Verify your exact setup with Samsung and your bank before relying on tap-to-pay.

The biggest limitation: Samsung Health Monitor

Samsung Health and Samsung Health Monitor are different. Ordinary fitness tracking in Samsung Health is broadly available on compatible Samsung and other Android phones. Samsung says Health Monitor features—including ECG, irregular heart rhythm notifications, blood-pressure functions and sleep-apnea functionality—require pairing with a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone. They are not unlocked simply by pairing the watch with a Pixel or OnePlus phone.

Availability also depends on the watch model, country and applicable regulatory requirements. These tools are not a diagnosis or a substitute for medical advice. If one of these features is a reason you are considering the watch, check Samsung’s [Health Monitor compatibility information](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10003433/) and [troubleshooting guidance](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/troubleshooting/TSG01208785/) before purchase.

Can you use a Galaxy Watch with an iPhone?

Galaxy Watch4 and newer: no

Watch4, Watch5, Watch6, Watch7, Watch FE, Watch Ultra and newer Wear OS Galaxy Watches are not compatible with iPhones. They rely on Google Play services, which iOS does not support. If you use an iPhone, do not buy one of these models expecting to pair it.

Some older Tizen watches: limited compatibility

Samsung lists certain older watches—including the 2018 Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch Active and Active2—as compatible with some iPhones, subject to the specific iPhone and iOS version. Some older Gear models also have model-specific support. These are aging, discontinued devices, so app availability, updates and battery condition can make a used watch a poor long-term choice even if it can pair. Check Samsung’s [compatibility list](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10004668/) for the exact model.

Does LTE let the watch work without a phone?

LTE can let a supported watch use cellular connectivity away from the phone, but it does not make every Galaxy Watch a fully independent device. A compatible carrier plan and supported regional watch edition are required, and setup or account functions may still rely on a phone.

Samsung’s documentation distinguishes among models: Galaxy Watch4 and Watch5 cannot be set up as standalone watches, while some LTE Watch6 models can be set up without a connected phone. Behavior varies by model, carrier, region and account configuration. See Samsung’s [Wear OS and standalone guidance](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10003348/) and [feature overview](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10003455/) for the model in question. LTE means cellular access in supported circumstances—not that every app, health feature or setup step works phone-free.

Troubleshooting common setup problems

The watch does not appear in Galaxy Wearable

  • Turn on Bluetooth, keep the devices close and restart both.
  • Update Galaxy Wearable, then check the phone’s Android version, RAM and GMS against the watch’s requirements.
  • Remove an old Bluetooth pairing and retry from Galaxy Wearable. Make sure the watch is not still paired to another phone.
  • If the watch was previously owned and setup remains blocked, reset it and try again.

A health feature or app is missing

  • Update the watch software, Galaxy Wearable and Samsung Health.
  • Check whether you mean Samsung Health fitness tracking or a Samsung Health Monitor feature.
  • For ECG, blood pressure, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications or sleep-apnea functions, confirm the watch model, compatible Samsung Galaxy phone and country availability.
  • If Health Monitor does not appear, Samsung’s [troubleshooting page](https://www.samsung.com/us/support/troubleshooting/TSG01208785/) notes that an incompatible phone or watch can be the cause.

LTE activation fails

  • Confirm the watch is the correct regional and carrier edition and that the carrier supports smartwatch service.
  • Pair the watch first, then check plan eligibility and whether the watch is locked or associated with another account.
  • Ask the carrier to confirm compatibility for your exact phone, watch and account; LTE support is not universal.

Should you buy a Galaxy Watch for a non-Samsung phone?

  • Consider one if your Android phone has GMS and meets the model’s requirements, and your priorities are fitness tracking, notifications, GPS, apps or Samsung hardware.
  • Choose a Samsung Galaxy phone or another watch if ECG, blood pressure, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications or sleep-apnea functions are essential. A Galaxy Watch paired to a non-Samsung phone will not provide those Samsung Health Monitor features.
  • Look elsewhere if you use an iPhone and want a modern Galaxy Watch, or if your Android phone lacks GMS.
  • Think carefully about older used models: a low price may not offset worn batteries, discontinued software and reduced app support.

If you want an alternative matched to your phone ecosystem, Google presents its Pixel Watch range at Google’s watch store; Garmin offers watches for a range of phones at Garmin’s smartwatch page; and iPhone users can review Apple Watch. These are ecosystem choices, not guarantees that every model or feature works on every phone.
