After every ocean swim or dive, secure the crown and any screw-down parts, rinse the watch with clean fresh water using a gentle flow, and wipe it dry with a soft cloth. Clean a metal, plastic, or polyurethane band separately with mild soap and a soft brush, then rinse away every trace of soap. Do not operate the crown or pushers while the watch is wet, and do not aim a hard faucet jet at the case. Persistent internal fogging or any suspicion that seawater entered the case requires immediate inspection by an authorized Citizen service center.
Why saltwater needs to be removed promptly
Sea water leaves salt crystals in the gaps around bracelet links, clasp parts, bezel edges and case hardware. As the water evaporates, those crystals can remain abrasive and attract more moisture. Sand and mud can lodge in the same areas. A fresh-water rinse removes the salt before it dries; drying prevents a damp band from staying against your skin or the case for hours.

Cleaning the exterior does not renew a watch’s seals or prove that it remains water-resistant. Water resistance is a condition that can decline as gaskets age, a crystal or crown is damaged, or a component is replaced incorrectly. Treat rinsing as post-use care, not as a substitute for a pressure or water-resistance inspection.

- Press the crown fully home. If your model has a screw-lock crown, screw it down completely according to the model’s manual.
- Check other screw-down components. A screw-down caseback or other threaded part should be secure before water reaches the watch.
- Leave controls alone once wet. Citizen warns not to operate the crown or buttons when the watch is wet. Do not pull, turn or press them during the rinse or while drying.
The Promaster Diver manual gives the same order: check that the crown and screw are tightened, then wash off sea water, mud or sand with pure water.

Fresh-water rinse: the safe procedure
1. Choose a gentle water source
Use a bowl or container of clean fresh water, or a gentle flow that does not strike the watch with force. Citizen’s precaution guidance says not to pour water directly from a tap onto the watch. A hard jet can drive water and grit toward openings and puts unnecessary pressure on seals, so keep the case out of the faucet stream.
2. Rinse the outside thoroughly
Submerge the secured watch briefly in the container and move it slowly through the water, or let a gentle flow run over it without directing a jet at the case. Work around the bezel, lugs, clasp, bracelet links and the spaces beside the crown guards. The aim is to dissolve and carry away salt, sand and mud; it is not to force water into every gap.
3. Remove visible debris without operating the watch
If a grain of sand or a salt crust remains on the exterior, let fresh water soften it and wipe it away with a soft cloth. Do not twist the bezel aggressively, actuate a chronograph pusher, or manipulate the crown while moisture is present.
4. Rinse until no soap or grit remains
Plain fresh water is sufficient for the case. If you clean the band with soap in the next step, give the band a separate, prolonged rinse so no residue remains in the links, clasp or strap texture.
Cleaning the bracelet or strap
Metal bracelet
Citizen recommends soap and a soft toothbrush for a metallic band. Use a small amount of mild soap, brush gently between links and around the clasp, and keep the brush away from the crystal, crown opening and any visible seal. Rinse the bracelet thoroughly with fresh water until it no longer feels slippery.

Plastic or polyurethane (synthetic-rubber) strap
The same method applies to plastic and synthetic-rubber bands: mild soap, a soft brush or soft toothbrush, then a complete fresh-water rinse. Brush the underside and keeper loops lightly, where salt and sand commonly remain. Do not use a stiff household brush, abrasive powder, solvent or strong degreaser; those products are not part of Citizen’s band-care instruction and can mark the strap.
A soft-bristle watch-cleaning brush or soft toothbrush for a watch band is appropriate for this exterior step only. It is not a tool for opening the case, probing gasket channels or scraping around the crown.
Leather strap
Citizen’s cited band guidance specifically covers metallic, plastic and polyurethane bands, while leather needs separate moisture caution. Do not treat a leather strap as if it were a dive-rated rubber strap: avoid soaking it, keep soap and prolonged water exposure away from the leather, and follow the strap maker’s care instructions. If a leather strap has absorbed sea water, have the strap assessed or replaced rather than repeatedly immersing it.
Drying the watch correctly
- Blot, do not scour. Use a clean, soft cloth on the case, crystal, bezel and band. Press into bracelet joints and clasp surfaces without rubbing grit across the finish.
- Finish air-drying. Open the clasp and separate folded strap sections so trapped water can evaporate. Let the band become completely dry before storage or wearing it again.
- Avoid heat. Do not use a hair dryer, radiator, oven or direct high heat. Rapid heating can stress finishes, adhesives and seals; Citizen’s instruction is simply to wipe with a dry cloth and allow moisture to clear.
Do not put the watch away while the underside or clasp is damp. A dry exterior makes the later inspection easier and prevents salt residue from being hidden under the band.
How to tell whether the rinse was adequate
Under bright light, inspect the crystal, bezel teeth, crown guards, lugs, clasp, bracelet links or strap grooves and the caseback edge. You should see no white salt film, dried mud or loose sand. A clasp should close normally, and a strap should have no new split, swelling or loose keeper. A cracked crystal, visibly displaced component or damaged band is a reason to stop wearing the watch and arrange service, even if it still appears to run.

Abnormal internal moisture
Fogging on the inside of the crystal is different from exterior droplets. Citizen says that if water enters the watch, or if the watch fogs and does not clear after a long time, you should consult a dealer or authorized service center for inspection and/or repair. Do not open the case or try to dry the movement at home.
What to do if you suspect seawater entered the case
- Stop operating the crown, buttons and other controls.
- Do not continue rinsing, shake the watch, or apply heat in an attempt to drive moisture out.
- Place the watch in a box or plastic bag to contain drips and protect it while you arrange help.
- Contact an authorized Citizen service center immediately and explain that the exposure was salt water. Prompt inspection is important because seawater can continue affecting internal parts after the watch appears dry.
Persistent fogging is enough to seek service; you do not need to wait for the watch to stop running. A watch that keeps time can still have moisture inside.
Can you wash a Promaster under the tap?
Citizen’s instruction distinguishes a thorough fresh-water rinse from a direct faucet stream. Rinsing in a container or under a gentle, indirect flow meets the cleaning goal without subjecting the case to a hard jet. Do not hold the crown, pusher or case opening directly under running water, and do not use a spray nozzle, pressure washer or shower setting designed to blast grime.
If a faucet is your only option, reduce the flow to a gentle stream, keep it from striking the case directly, and let water run over the already-secured bracelet while you support the watch. A container remains the more controllable method because you can move the watch through still water rather than aiming pressure at it.

Water-resistance ratings and model differences
Promaster models do not all share the same rating or construction. Read the water-resistance marking on your exact reference and use its manual for crown, pusher and strap instructions. Never infer a rating from the word “Promaster” alone.
| Documented model information | What it establishes | What you still must check |
|---|---|---|
| Promaster Diver 300 m manual | Rated water-resistant to 300 m and described as suitable for scuba and saturation diving | The condition of that individual watch’s seals, crystal, crown and case; the manual also prohibits operating the crown or button when wet |
| Other Promaster references | The available data does not establish one shared rating or identical controls for every model | The water-resistance marking and manual for the exact reference |
Even a watch marked 300 m can lose resistance after impact, seal aging, crystal damage or unauthorized opening. A rinse removes salt; only an appropriate inspection and pressure test can evaluate the water-resistance system.
When professional inspection is the right choice
Immediate service
- Internal crystal fogging that persists instead of clearing.
- Any credible path for seawater to enter the case, such as a loose or damaged crown, cracked crystal or failed case component.
- A crown, pusher, bezel or caseback that feels loose, binds, or no longer seats normally.
Inspection before the next dive
- The watch has an unknown service history or has been exposed to a significant impact.
- Seals are old, visibly damaged or due for the interval specified in the exact manual.
- You cannot confirm that the crown and screw-down parts close correctly.
Use an authorized Citizen service center or a qualified watch professional for internal moisture, seal replacement and water-resistance testing. Exterior cleaning cannot verify those conditions.

| Mistake | Safer alternative |
|---|---|
| Rinsing with the crown unscrewed or partly pulled out | Press it home and fully engage the screw lock before water touches the watch. |
| Aiming a strong faucet or spray nozzle at the case | Use a container of fresh water or a gentle, indirect flow. |
| Turning the crown or pressing buttons to “flush” them | Leave all controls untouched until the watch is completely dry; if moisture is inside, seek service. |
| Scrubbing the crystal, seals or case openings with a stiff brush | Use a soft brush only on the metal, plastic or polyurethane band and wipe the case with a soft cloth. |
| Leaving soap in bracelet links or strap texture | Rinse thoroughly until all soap residue is gone. |
| Using heat to dry a wet watch | Blot with a soft cloth and let the band air-dry. |
| Assuming a high depth rating guarantees present-day safety | Check the exact reference’s manual and arrange inspection when seals, crystal or crown condition is uncertain. |
A practical post-ocean routine
Make the rinse part of the same routine as leaving the water, rather than waiting for salt to dry. Secure the crown and screw-down parts before removing sand; rinse the exterior in fresh water without a hard jet; clean only the appropriate band material with mild soap and a soft brush; rinse away the soap; then wipe and air-dry. Once dry, look for damage or persistent fogging before the next use. If anything suggests internal moisture, stop home cleaning and contact authorized service.
Answers to specific Promaster cleaning questions
How soon should I rinse after an ocean swim?
Rinse promptly after each saltwater exposure. The purpose is to remove sea water before salt dries on the case, bracelet or strap; Citizen’s instruction is to rinse thoroughly after immersion.

What soap is safe for a dive-watch band?
Use mild soap with a soft brush or soft toothbrush on metallic, plastic or polyurethane bands. Rinse until no soap residue remains. Citizen does not authorize harsh cleaners, solvents or abrasive compounds in the cited band-care guidance.
Should I remove the strap before rinsing?
Not for routine exterior care. You can rinse and brush an attached metal, plastic or polyurethane band while keeping the crown secured. Remove a strap only if your model’s manual allows it and you can reinstall it safely; a damaged spring bar or loose attachment warrants professional help.
Why is the crystal fogging after a rinse?
Fogging inside the crystal indicates moisture in the case, not ordinary surface water. If it does not clear promptly, stop using the controls, contain the watch in a box or plastic bag and arrange immediate authorized inspection.
Does rinsing prove my Promaster is still water-resistant?
No. Rinsing is maintenance after exposure. It cannot detect aged or damaged seals and does not replace a pressure or water-resistance test, especially before scuba or saturation diving.
