Huawei announced the HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 Series in Barcelona on September 19, 2024. The family includes the standard GT 5 and GT 5 Pro, with long battery claims, more than 100 workout modes, GPS navigation and Huawei’s HUAWEI TruSense System. Its “advanced calorie tracking” is primarily a Stay Fit workflow for logging food and calculating an estimated calorie deficit—not a direct, clinical measurement of calories burned.
The GT 5 remains a 2024 generation listed on Huawei regional product pages as of August 16, 2026, rather than a new August 2026 launch. Release dates, prices, configurations, software features and promotions vary by country.
What Huawei actually announced
Huawei’s global launch announcement described the GT 5 Series as available from September 19, 2024. The range has two tiers:
- HUAWEI WATCH GT 5: the mainstream model focused on battery life, health tracking, sport modes, GPS and fashion-oriented design.
- HUAWEI WATCH GT 5 Pro: a more premium version with titanium or ceramic construction options and additional golf, running, navigation and diving features.
Huawei’s announcement used worldwide-launch language, but a country’s actual sale date, strap and case combinations, pricing, included promotions and supported health services must be checked on that country’s Huawei store. See the launch announcement at Huawei’s September 2024 release and the regional product information at Huawei’s GT 5 page.

What TruSense means
“TruSense sensor” is shorthand, not Huawei’s formal product name. Huawei calls it the HUAWEI TruSense System: a combination of upgraded sensing hardware and algorithms used to produce health and exercise measurements.
Huawei says the system is faster, more accurate and more comprehensive. Those are manufacturer claims rather than an independent validation study, so they should not be read as proof that the GT 5 outperforms every Apple, Garmin, Fitbit, Samsung or GT 4 model.
Depending on the watch, region, phone and software version, the system contributes to heart-rate, blood-oxygen, sleep, stress or emotional-wellbeing features, workout analysis and related alerts. These outputs are wellness estimates or screening aids, not a replacement for clinical equipment or a diagnosis.

Sensor, system and result are different things
- Sensor hardware: optical and other components inside the watch collect signals.
- TruSense System: Huawei’s name for the hardware-and-algorithm platform that processes those signals.
- Health output: an estimate, trend, alert or workout metric generated from the processed data.
How the calorie feature works
The GT 5’s headline calorie function is tied to Huawei’s Stay Fit app. Huawei says it calculates a calorie deficit, supports meal logging and quick entries, and provides a larger food library. The product page is at consumer.huawei.com/uk/wearables/watch-gt5/.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- You enter personal information and a weight-management goal in the relevant Huawei Health or Stay Fit setup.
- The system estimates calorie needs and activity expenditure from your profile and watch data.
- You log meals manually, with quick entries or from the food database.
- The app compares logged intake with estimated expenditure and displays a deficit or progress view.
Exact menu names and paths can change by country and Huawei Health version; Huawei’s product page confirms the functions but not one universal interface sequence.
Three different meanings of “calorie tracking”
| Term | What it represents | GT 5 limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Food-calorie logging | Calories you report eating | Depends on serving sizes, ingredients and database accuracy |
| Estimated active calories | Energy inferred from movement, heart rate, activity, body data and duration | It is an estimate; a wrist watch does not directly measure metabolic energy in ordinary use |
| Calorie deficit | A calculated difference between estimated needs or expenditure and logged intake | Errors in either side affect the result |
Use the number to identify trends, not as an exact daily allowance. Estimates can be distorted by incorrect height, weight, age or sex settings; a loose fit; irregular heart-rate readings; strength training, intervals, cycling, swimming or unusual wrist motion; inconsistent wear; and inaccurate food portions. Restaurant meals, missing ingredients and regional food-database differences also remain user-input problems.

| Display | 1.43-inch AMOLED | 1.32-inch AMOLED |
| Water protection | 5 ATM; the comparison page also lists IP69K | 5 ATM; the comparison page also lists IP69K |
| Positioning | Dual-band, five-system GNSS with Sunflower Positioning System | Configuration and availability vary by market |
| Battery headline | Up to 14 days under Huawei’s stated test conditions | Up to 7 days under Huawei’s stated test conditions |
| Workout support | More than 100 workout modes | More than 100 workout modes |
Source: Huawei’s GT 5 comparison page. “Up to” is important: GPS use, always-on display, continuous monitoring, notifications, music, calls and frequent workouts reduce endurance. Huawei also notes that dimensions and weight can vary with specification, manufacturing process and measurement method. Offline route navigation is listed for the larger comparison configuration, so verify the exact model sold in your country.
What the GT 5 Pro adds
The Pro is a separate buying decision, not simply a larger standard GT 5. Huawei’s regional material identifies these Pro-specific or enhanced capabilities:

Materials and sport features do not automatically produce better calorie estimates. Availability can differ by model, region and software version. Details appear on Huawei’s comparison page and in Huawei’s product-feature announcement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Health and fitness features: what is confirmed
Depending on market and connected phone, Huawei promotes heart-rate monitoring, blood-oxygen monitoring, sleep tracking, stress or emotional-wellbeing features, menstrual-cycle management, workout evaluation, running analysis and route tracking. Some regions may also offer arrhythmia-related alerts or other advanced measurements.
Feature availability depends on the watch edition, country, Huawei Health version and phone operating system. Huawei’s pages do not make every function universal. Treat alerts as wellness or screening features unless a specific function has separate regulatory clearance in your market; the GT 5 should not be described as diagnosing atrial fibrillation, sleep disorders, diabetes or other conditions.

Compatibility and practical setup limits
A surfaced Huawei China listing specifies HarmonyOS 2.0 or later, Android 9.0 or later and iOS 13.0 or later: Huawei’s China product listing. Local requirements and feature support can differ, so check the compatibility page for your country before buying.
- Huawei Health may need to be installed outside Google Play in some markets.
- Pairing with iOS can provide a narrower experience than pairing with Huawei or Android phones.
- Watch faces, maps, Health+ content, payments, health alerts and other services can be country-specific.
- Account-region settings may affect downloads and synchronization.
- Do not assume cellular or eSIM calling: the cited China configuration explicitly says it does not support independent eSIM calling.
Before relying on the watch, confirm Huawei Health installation, account creation, pairing, notifications, firmware updates, watch-face installation, health-data synchronization and any export or sharing features you need.
What the announcement does not establish
- Clinical-grade calorie measurement or exact food recognition without user input.
- That every TruSense feature works in every country or on every phone.
- Fourteen days of real-world battery life with heavy GPS, monitoring and display use.
- That the standard GT 5 includes every Pro feature.
- That Huawei’s accuracy language proves superiority over competing watches.
- That the GT 5 replaces a full Wear OS or watchOS smartwatch for apps, payments, cellular service or deep phone integration.
Which GT 5 should you buy?
Choose the standard GT 5 if
- You value long battery life over a large third-party app ecosystem.
- You want health, exercise, GPS, notifications and everyday watch functions without daily charging.
- You want calorie-deficit and meal-logging tools but not Pro materials, golf or diving functions.
- You use Android or iPhone and have confirmed regional compatibility.
Choose the GT 5 Pro if
- Titanium or ceramic construction matters.
- You will use golf mapping, advanced route features, running analysis or diving support.
- You accept paying more for materials and specialized sports tools.
Consider a discounted GT 4 if
- You mainly need long battery life, basic health tracking, GPS and notifications.
- The GT 5’s Stay Fit changes, TruSense platform, route features and newer sports tools are not important.
Some software features may reach older watches, while others depend on hardware, region or product tier, so do not assume every GT 5 function is exclusive to this generation.
How it compares with other watch categories
| Alternative | Usually the better fit for | Trade-off versus GT 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch | iPhone integration, apps, payments, notifications and cellular options | Typically shorter battery expectations and Apple-device dependence |
| Garmin | Structured training, recovery, running, cycling and sports analytics | A different interface and often a more specialized, potentially costlier platform |
| Samsung Galaxy Watch | Android users wanting Google services and a fuller smartwatch ecosystem | Battery-life proposition may be less compelling for some users |
| Fitbit or a dedicated calorie platform | Nutrition, activity trends, sleep and weight-management focus | Less emphasis on premium watch design, navigation and GT 5-style battery claims |
Prices, subscriptions and availability change by country, so no single global price comparison is reliable without a current local check.
Verdict
The Huawei Watch GT 5 is most compelling as a stylish, long-lasting fitness watch with extensive workout support, GPS and an integrated food-and-activity workflow. TruSense is Huawei’s combined sensing-and-algorithm system, not one magic sensor, and Stay Fit’s calorie feature is best understood as meal logging plus estimated expenditure and deficit management. That can make weight-management habits easier to organize, but it cannot turn wrist estimates or manually entered food data into exact metabolic measurements.
