Huawei’s Blood-Glucose Smartwatch Plan: What It Promised and What It Can Actually Do

Huawei researched non-invasive glucose technology, but its documented smartwatch features now provide regional diabetes-risk assessments—not direct numerical glucose readings or a CGM replacement.

Short answer: Huawei did announce genuine blood-glucose technology research in June 2022, but the documented consumer features that followed are limited, region-specific risk assessments. They infer elevated-blood-glucose or diabetes risk from watch data; they are not a validated, continuous numerical glucose monitor built into the watch.

What Huawei announced in 2022

On June 14, 2022, Huawei announced three health-research programs covering blood glucose, lung-function health and high-altitude health. The company said it was working with medical institutions and exploring invasive, minimally invasive and non-invasive approaches. Huawei presented its TruSeen physiological-sensing platform as part of the broader effort to extend smartwatch health monitoring.

The announcement described research and development, not a finished sensor. It gave no launch date, accuracy result, final hardware design or regulatory clearance. Huawei also discussed early warning and high-blood-glucose risk screening, which is different from promising that a watch already measured glucose concentrations.

What exists now

HUAWEI WATCH GT 6 Pro

Huawei’s support documentation describes a Diabetes Risk Study for the HUAWEI WATCH GT 6 Pro. The watch gathers physiological information, including sleep and heart-rate data, across day and night for approximately 3 to 14 days. It then produces an assessment related to hyperglycemia or diabetes risk.

Huawei also says the watch can run the study even though the HUAWEI Research smartphone app is unavailable on iPhone.

Huawei’s instructions are: open the watch app list, choose HUAWEI Research, select Diabetes Risk Study, join the study, wear the watch during the monitoring period and review the resulting assessment. The official instructions are on Huawei’s GT 6 Pro support page.

HUAWEI WATCH 4 and WATCH 5

Huawei’s Chinese support documentation describes a high-blood-glucose-risk assessment research feature for WATCH 4 and WATCH 5. It is currently limited to mainland China and is associated with cooperation with professional Chinese hospitals. Huawei’s global research page also lists a Blood Glucose Study, a Diabetes Risk Study in the Middle East and Africa, and research involving different skin tones and physiological backgrounds.

Does a Huawei watch measure glucose directly?

Not in the sense most people mean by glucose monitoring. The documented Huawei studies infer risk from physiological signals and provide an assessment after data collection. They are not documented as a system that:

  • measures glucose concentration directly;
  • samples interstitial fluid;
  • shows a validated glucose number every few minutes;
  • provides continuous glucose trends equivalent to a CGM;
  • issues medical hypoglycemia alerts; or
  • replaces a prescribed glucose meter or CGM.

The exact sensor mechanism used by each current Huawei risk study has not been established in the cited documentation. “Non-invasive” describes Huawei’s research direction, not proof of medical-grade, direct glucose measurement.

Risk assessment versus a real CGM

Capability Huawei documented research features Authorized CGM
What is measured Watch-derived physiological signals used for risk inference Glucose in interstitial fluid through a sensor inserted under the skin
Output Risk assessment after roughly 3–14 days, where supported Numerical readings and trends on a defined wear schedule
Alerts Not documented as a hypoglycemia or treatment-alert system May provide high- and low-glucose alarms, depending on product and indication
Clinical role Research/reference information; not for diagnosis or treatment Validated and authorized for specified populations and uses
Availability Selected markets and regional product variants Subject to local authorization, prescription and eligibility rules

A smartwatch may display data supplied by an external CGM, but that does not mean the watch itself measures glucose. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration distinguishes authorized sensor data displayed on a watch from unauthorized watches or rings claiming to measure glucose independently. Its safety communication is available at FDA.gov.

Where is the feature available?

Product or program Documented geography Important qualification
WATCH 4/5 high-blood-glucose-risk research Mainland China Huawei’s China support page describes the feature as currently limited there.
WATCH GT 6 Pro Diabetes Risk Study Selected markets, including a Philippines support page and a Middle East and Africa research listing Country, model, account and firmware support must be checked locally.
United States and Europe General availability is not shown in the cited Huawei documentation Do not infer availability from a Chinese, Middle Eastern, African or Philippine model.

Changing an account region, sideloading software or importing a regional watch does not establish official support or medical validity. If the feature is missing, verify the model, country, firmware and Huawei Health version rather than relying on unofficial installation methods.

What evidence supports the claims?

The evidence has three distinct levels:

  1. Announcement evidence: Huawei’s 2022 statement confirms a research initiative involving blood-glucose technology and TruSeen.
  2. Product-support evidence: Huawei’s current pages confirm limited risk-assessment studies, their monitoring period, target populations and disclaimers.
  3. Clinical-validation evidence: The cited material does not establish a peer-reviewed study showing that a commercial Huawei watch directly measures glucose with CGM-level accuracy.

A 2026 secondary report describes a Dubai Health validation effort involving 150 healthy, prediabetic and diabetic participants, with comparisons against fasting blood glucose, HbA1c and oral-glucose-tolerance testing. That is a reported study design or validation effort, not proof of completed validation until results are published by Huawei or Dubai Health. The report is at Wareable.

For perspective, an independent published prototype called a “watch” used a flexible electrochemical patch and reverse iontophoresis to extract interstitial fluid. In 23 volunteers it reported 84.34% clinical accuracy in Clarke error-grid zones A and B. It was a laboratory prototype, not evidence that Huawei uses the same method or that a commercial Huawei watch has achieved that performance. See the PubMed record and full study.

Safety: who should and should not rely on it

  • Type 1 diabetes: Huawei’s GT 6 Pro documentation does not include this group in the stated target audience.
  • Gestational diabetes: It is also excluded from that stated audience.
  • Possible hypoglycemia: A risk assessment is not a low-blood-sugar alarm.
  • Medication or insulin decisions: Do not base dosing, diet changes or emergency action on the watch result.
  • Low-risk result: It cannot rule out diabetes or prediabetes.
  • High-risk result: Arrange formal testing with a clinician rather than self-diagnosing.

The FDA warns consumers not to use smartwatches or smart rings that claim to measure blood glucose on their own. For diabetes management, use a regulator-authorized meter or CGM appropriate to your condition.

What buyers should look for

  • Does the product show a numerical glucose reading or only a risk category?
  • Is the function supported in your country and on your exact regional model?
  • Has the function received authorization from the relevant regulator?
  • Does it support your clinical situation, including type 1 diabetes or hypoglycemia risk?
  • Are there published clinical-validation results rather than only a company research description?
  • Can the watch officially display data from your chosen CGM and phone platform?

The HUAWEI WATCH GT 6 Pro may be useful as a general smartwatch with a selected-market research feature. WATCH 4 and WATCH 5 buyers should treat the documented mainland-China function similarly. Neither is a documented standalone CGM.

Why the distinction matters

Huawei’s approach is commercially attractive because passive, multi-day screening could encourage people to seek formal testing without a skin sensor. It may also help research across varied physiological backgrounds. But false positives, false negatives, clinical usefulness, regulatory review and the needs of excluded populations remain decisive.

For actual glucose numbers, trends or alerts, choose an authorized external CGM or meter. Devices such as Dexcom systems use an external biosensor; a compatible smartwatch can serve as a display, but it is not the measuring instrument. FDA device context is available here, and Dexcom’s company information is at Dexcom Investor Relations.

Bottom line

Huawei’s 2022 blood-glucose announcement was a real research and product-development commitment, not the launch of a finished smartwatch CGM. By 2026, selected Huawei watches can collect physiological data for diabetes- or hyperglycemia-risk assessment in certain regions. That may be useful preliminary screening, but it is not direct, continuous glucose measurement and should not replace an authorized meter, CGM or clinical advice.
