The Hublot Classic Fusion Original is a modern reissue of Hublot’s first 1980 watch, preserving the defining combination of a precious or technical case, exposed bezel screws and a rubber strap. The collection spans 33 mm, 38 mm and 42 mm cases in titanium, black ceramic and yellow gold. The current 42 mm Black Magic model is automatic, rated to 50 m (5 ATM), and offers approximately 48 hours of power reserve.

What the Classic Fusion Original represents

The Classic Fusion Original revisits the design that established Hublot in 1980. Its identity comes from combining contrasting materials—such as precious metal or ceramic with rubber—in a single watch rather than treating the strap as an afterthought. That approach remains central to Hublot’s “Art of Fusion” design language, which the brand describes as extending “right through to the heart of the movement.”

It is a modern reissue, not a vintage watch. Case finishing, movements, dimensions and references vary by model, so specifications should be checked against the exact watch being considered.

Sizes and materials

Case size Materials available in the collection Typical fit considerations
33 mm Titanium, ceramic and yellow gold executions are represented across the collection; the launch titanium model used quartz. Best for smaller wrists or a compact, restrained presence.
38 mm Titanium, black ceramic and yellow gold versions are offered across the range. Middle-ground proportion for buyers who find 33 mm too discreet and 42 mm too large.
42 mm Titanium, black ceramic and yellow gold versions, including the Black Magic reference. Largest wrist presence; check lug-to-lug fit as well as the diameter.

Titanium

Titanium is the lightest-feeling choice in this comparison. It suits owners who want a substantial case diameter without the weight of gold and who prefer a technical, muted appearance.

Black ceramic

Black ceramic gives the watch its dark Black Magic aesthetic and is highly resistant to everyday scratching. It is still possible to damage ceramic through a hard impact, and a damaged ceramic case is not refinished in the same way as steel or gold.

Yellow gold

Yellow gold provides the strongest precious-metal presence and the greatest visual and wrist weight. It is the most overtly luxurious option and should be evaluated with both the metal’s softness and its higher purchase price in mind.

The 42 mm Black Magic specification

Hublot’s current 42 mm Black Magic reference is 542.CX.1270.RX.MDM. Its principal specifications are:

Rank #2
Hublot Classic Fusion Automatic Black Dial Men's Watch 542.CM.1171.RX
  • Hublot Classic Fusion Automatic Black Dial Men's Watch 542.CM.1171.RX
  • Case: satin-finished and polished black ceramic.
  • Bezel: black ceramic with six H-shaped titanium screws.
  • Crystal: sapphire with anti-reflective treatment.
  • Dial: polished black lacquered.
  • Movement: HUB1110 self-winding mechanical movement.
  • Power reserve: approximately 48 hours.
  • Water resistance: 50 m (5 ATM).
  • Strap and clasp: black smooth rubber strap with a black ceramic and black-plated titanium deployant clasp.

The HUB1110 is automatic, so normal wrist movement winds it while worn. If it stops after being off the wrist, it must be restarted and set before use; the approximately 48-hour reserve indicates how long it can run when fully wound and left stationary, not a guarantee for every wearing pattern.

Which size should you choose?

Choose 33 mm if proportion matters most

The 33 mm case is the most compact option and is the sensible starting point for a smaller wrist, a dressier profile or anyone who dislikes oversized watches. The launch 33 mm titanium model was quartz, so do not assume every 33 mm Classic Fusion Original is automatic.

Choose 38 mm for the broadest compromise

At 38 mm, the watch keeps the collection’s integrated-bezel-and-rubber-strap character while avoiding the visual dominance of the 42 mm case. It is the practical choice when wrist size, clothing and daily versatility all matter.

Choose 42 mm for maximum wrist presence

The 42 mm version makes the bezel hardware, ceramic or titanium case and broad strap more prominent. Measure the watch’s lug span against your wrist rather than relying on diameter alone, especially if your wrist is narrow or you wear fitted cuffs.

Price and value context

Launch coverage by Hodinkee in 2023 reported prices from $6,500 for the 33 mm titanium quartz model to $24,100 for the 42 mm solid-yellow-gold automatic model. Those were launch figures, not a universal current price list. Retail pricing varies by reference, market, taxes, availability and any subsequent Hublot price changes.

For a current quote, use the exact reference and region shown by Hublot or an authorized retailer. Comparing a titanium quartz watch with a ceramic or gold automatic model without identifying the reference can produce a misleading value judgment.

Can you swim with it?

The 42 mm Black Magic is rated to 50 m (5 ATM), which is suitable for everyday splashes, hand-washing and cautious surface swimming when the crown, clasp and seals are in good condition. It is not a dedicated dive watch, and the rating should not be interpreted as permission for scuba diving, high-pressure water sports or hot tubs. Water resistance can decline as seals age, so have the watch pressure-tested at appropriate service intervals and avoid operating the crown in water.

Strap and replacement considerations

The Black Magic 42 mm is supplied with a black smooth rubber strap. A replacement should be selected by exact reference, lug dimensions, end-link shape and clasp compatibility—not simply by case diameter. Hublot’s fitted rubber systems can use case-specific geometry, so confirm compatibility with Hublot or an authorized service center before ordering.

Warranty

Hublot states that watches purchased from 1 January 2026 receive a five-year international warranty, subject to the brand’s warranty terms. Keep the dated purchase documentation and verify that the seller is authorized, because coverage conditions and exclusions apply.

How the collection compares at a glance

Decision factor What the Classic Fusion Original offers What to watch for
Design 1980-inspired Hublot case architecture, exposed H-shaped screws and rubber strap. Modern reissue details differ by reference.
Materials Titanium, black ceramic and yellow gold. Weight, scratch behavior and price change substantially by material.
Sizes 33 mm, 38 mm and 42 mm. Diameter alone does not determine fit; check lug span and strap curvature.
Movement Quartz appears on the smallest launch model; automatic movements are used on models such as the 42 mm Black Magic. Confirm the movement for the exact reference.
Water resistance 50 m (5 ATM) on the 42 mm Black Magic. Appropriate for everyday water exposure, not professional diving.
