Its name describes this unusual display—not a watch that changes time or counts down. Cartier announced it in 2024 as a numbered 200-piece limited edition.
How does the Cartier Santos-Dumont Rewind tell time backwards?
Its hands travel counterclockwise, and the Roman numerals are arranged to make that direction readable. XII and VI remain in their familiar positions while the other numerals are reversed. The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie describes the display this way: “The hours are read counterclockwise on Roman numerals that defy convention.” A railway-style minute track provides the familiar minute scale around the dial.
“Time-reversing” is therefore a playful description of how the watch displays time. The Rewind does not reverse time itself, and it is not a countdown timer: its listed functions are hours and minutes.
What movement powers the Rewind?
Cartier uses a manually wound calibre 230 MC for the reverse-running display. The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie lists a 38-hour power reserve and a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour. Monochrome Watches describes the movement as a modified 430 MC with the hand rotation inverted; the sources differ in how they describe the calibre’s relationship to that base movement.

Case, dial and dimensions
The 2024 model pairs a rectangular platinum case with a red carnelian dial, a brown alligator strap and a crown set with a ruby cabochon. The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie lists the case at 31.50 x 43.50 mm and 7.30 mm thick, with water resistance of 30 m. Monochrome Watches gives the width as 31.4 mm, while agreeing on the 43.5 mm length, 7.3 mm height and 30 m water resistance.
Edition size and launch-era price
Cartier announced 200 numbered pieces for the Santos-Dumont Rewind at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024. The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie lists an indicated price of CHF 37,000, a figure also reported by Monochrome Watches in its launch coverage on 11 April 2024. That is a launch-era price, not a verified current retail quote or resale valuation. Current availability and market prices are not established here.

How it connects to the Santos-Dumont story
The name recalls the watch story associated with aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont. Monochrome Watches reports that Louis Cartier presented him with a purpose-designed wristwatch in 1904: its rounded-square case and bezel rivets distinguished it from a pocket watch, and wearing it made it possible to consult the time in the cockpit without taking a hand from the controls. That history provides the model’s lineage; the Rewind’s counterclockwise display is a contemporary horological conceit, not a feature of the original watch or a cockpit function.
