The URWERK EMC SR-71 is a ten-piece limited edition mechanical watch whose monitoring electronics let its wearer check timing performance and make a manual rate adjustment. Its movement remains mechanically powered; a hand-wound generator powers the electronics. Named for the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, the watch also uses SR-71-associated alloy in its crank handle and bezel, according to URWERK.
What is the URWERK EMC SR-71?
Introduced by URWERK on August 21, 2024, the EMC SR-71 combines a manually wound mechanical movement with an electronic module that measures the movement’s performance. URWERK announced a limited run of 10 pieces. The name and materials connect the watch to the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, but its distinctive function is the EMC system: the wearer can obtain timing information from the watch itself and adjust its rate manually.
URWERK stated a launch price of CHF 150,000 excluding tax. That is the price announced in 2024, not a verified current asking price, present-day availability, or resale value. URWERK’s launch release and Hodinkee’s August 21, 2024 introduction report the limited edition and launch details.
How does the EMC monitor timing performance?
The EMC is still a mechanical watch. Its manually wound UR-EMC movement stores energy in mainsprings and drives the watch; the electronic monitoring assembly has a separate power source. Turning the hand-operated generator supplies energy to that assembly, rather than replacing the movement’s mechanical power source.

- Wind the generator. The wearer turns the crank to power the monitoring electronics.
- Activate the indication. The wearer triggers the performance measurement and reads it on the δ display.
- Adjust, if desired. A screw on the back lets the wearer make a manual rate adjustment.
An optical sensor reads the balance, and URWERK specifies a 16,000,000 Hz reference oscillator for the electronic module. The δ indication provides timing information; it does not automatically regulate the movement. URWERK’s EMC collection page explains that the balance is sensed over a short measurement period and that the adjustment screw changes the active length of the spring.
This is owner-accessible monitoring and adjustment, not an independent accuracy test or a chronometer certification. URWERK founder and watchmaker Felix Baumgartner describes the concept as giving owners data traditionally available to professional watchmakers, but that is the maker’s explanation of the system rather than an external performance assessment.

How the SR-71 Blackbird shapes the design
URWERK says the crank handle and screw-down bezel incorporate alloy associated with the SR-71 fuselage. The case itself is titanium and steel. The launch material does not establish an independently verified alloy recipe beyond the elements named by the maker.
The dial separates the hours and minutes, seconds, δ performance indication, and power-reserve display. URWERK artistic director and co-founder Martin Frei said, “The layout of the screens composing the dial is reminiscent of the SR-71’s cockpit instruments, and not without reason”. He also described the face as “a personal cockpit” for showing both the time and how the watch works. These comments express the design intent; they are not technical assessments of the aircraft or the watch.

URWERK describes the strap as a nylon-and-leather NATO-style design inspired by aeronautical safety straps, with hook-and-loop fastening. The launch specifications do not state its width or identify a confirmed compatible replacement strap.

Who is the EMC SR-71 for?
The EMC SR-71 is most distinctive for a wearer interested in both mechanical watchmaking and the ability to inspect and manually adjust a movement’s timing. Its cockpit-inspired display and SR-71 material reference give it a strong aviation connection, while its 47.55 mm width, 49.57 mm length, and 17.58 mm thickness make the physical scale a central consideration. The stated 30 m / 3 ATM water resistance is a modest specification, not a signal that the watch is intended for water sports.
Its ten-piece production run makes it an exceptionally limited model, but the 2024 launch announcement does not establish whether one can be acquired today. Anyone seeking current availability or pricing would need confirmation directly from URWERK or a seller; the launch price should not be treated as a present market valuation.
