It followed IWC’s 1992 Double Chronograph debut, but it is a later reference, not the original model. For anyone considering one today, the key is to assess the individual watch rather than assume every 3713 has identical specifications or condition.
What is an IWC Doppelchronograph?
“Doppelchronograph” is IWC’s name for its Double Chronograph, a chronograph with a rattrapante, or split-seconds, function. The Ref. 3713 belongs to the Pilot’s Watch line and is generally dated to approximately 1996–2005 by Phillips and Fratello. IWC dates the first Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph to its debut at the Basel Watch Fair in 1992 and identifies that earlier model as Ref. IW3711.
IWC described the original project this way: “The aim was for IWC to become the first manufacturer to launch a wrist watch with a split-seconds chronograph and an automatic movement.” The statement appears in IWC’s Pilot’s Watches Historical References page, in its account of the 1992 model.
What does split-seconds mean on a watch?
A standard chronograph measures one elapsed-time interval. A split-seconds chronograph adds a second central seconds hand so the wearer can capture an intermediate time or a second finish while the main chronograph continues running.

How the rattrapante works
- Start the chronograph: the two central seconds hands move together.
- Press the split-seconds control to stop the rattrapante hand and read a first time, while the primary chronograph hand continues.
- Press the control again to release the stopped hand; it catches up with the running hand.
- Stop the chronograph to read the final elapsed time.
IWC’s official operating manual for the Double Chronograph Ref. 3718 describes recording intermediate times or a second finish time, and adding stop times together. That explains the family’s mechanism; the manual is for Ref. 3718, so its instructions and specifications should not automatically be treated as a Ref. 3713 specification sheet.
How does the 3713 differ from the original 3711?
| Reference | What the cited sources establish |
|---|---|
| IW3711 | IWC identifies it as the first Pilot’s Watch Double Chronograph, launched at the Basel Watch Fair in 1992. |
| 3713 | Phillips and Fratello place it at approximately 1996–2005. Phillips documents a circa-2000 stainless-steel IW371303 example with a 42 mm case, automatic calibre 79230 and 29 jewels. |
The available sources do not establish a complete, variation-by-variation specification comparison between the two references. The Phillips measurements and movement details describe its catalogued IW371303 example, not every watch bearing a 3713 reference.

What movement is in the IWC 3713?
For the circa-2000 IW371303 it catalogued, Phillips lists automatic calibre 79230 and 29 jewels. Fratello describes the movement as based on the Valjoux 7750 and credits Richard Habring with designing the added split-seconds mechanism. Those movement-history details are specialist reporting, rather than specifications stated on IWC’s historical-reference page.
IWC’s manual for the related Ref. 3718 says that model measures elapsed time up to 12 hours and has approximately 44 hours of power reserve when fully wound. Because that manual names Ref. 3718, these figures should not be assumed to apply to Ref. 3713 without confirmation for the particular watch.

- Large Statement Fit: Designed for men who prefer a substantial watch: 47mm case diameter, 15mm thickness, 102g weight, 25mm strap width and 240mm strap length. Please review the measurements before ordering for the best fit
- Rubber Strap and 3ATM Water Resistance: The flexible rubber strap and buckle provide an adjustable, secure fit for daily wear. 3ATM water resistance handles splashes and light rain; avoid swimming, showering, diving or using the pushers underwater
Is an IWC 3713 worth buying?
Whether a specific 3713 is a good purchase depends on its authenticity, condition, service needs and price against comparable, dated sales. Auction records from Phillips and Dorotheum show that examples have appeared on the secondary market; they do not establish current availability, a representative sale value or a fair current asking price.
Checks to make on an individual watch
- Confirm the reference and configuration. Match the reference and movement details to the watch’s documentation and, where possible, have an independent watchmaker verify them.
- Inspect originality. Check the dial, hands, luminous material, case and other components. Ask whether any parts have been replaced and whether those replacements are documented.
- Request service records. A split-seconds chronograph is mechanically more involved than a conventional chronograph. Establish when it was last serviced and whether the chronograph and rattrapante functions operate correctly.
- Review what is included. Verify the presence and authenticity of papers, box and other accessories rather than treating them as guaranteed parts of a listing.
- Compare like with like. Use dated sales of watches with similar condition, originality and completeness; an auction catalogue entry alone is not a current valuation.
Phillips catalogued a circa-2000 Ref. IW371303 in its 2024 Hong Kong auction catalogue, and Dorotheum published a separate Ref. 3713 auction record dated June 3, 2022. These records are useful provenance for the reference’s auction history, not evidence of live stock or present market pricing: Phillips listing and Dorotheum record.
