The Longines Saint-Imier Retrograde Moon Phases packs four retrograde indications, a moonphase and a day/night display into a formal automatic watch. Its dial is unusually animated, but the 44 mm case is thick and the polished steel bracelet has substantial presence. Fratello’s 2012 hands-on review offers a useful account of how the watch looks and wears; buyers considering one today should treat its price and configurations as historical details and assess the specific pre-owned example.
What is the Longines Saint-Imier Retrograde Moon Phases?
It is a watch from Longines’ Watchmaking Tradition collection, covered by Fratello in a hands-on article published on 24 August 2012. The review identifies the silver/white-dial version as reference L2.764.4.73.0 and the black-dial versions as L2.764.4.53.3 and L2.764.4.53.6. Fratello’s sample had a silver dial and blued steel hands; it also noted a black dial with silver-colored steel hands. These are period reference and configuration details, not confirmation that Longines currently sells the model. Fratello’s hands-on review
What does the dial do?
The watch’s appeal is the way several displays share the dial. Four indications use retrograde arcs: their hands travel along a scale, then return to the starting point rather than completing a full circle. A moonphase at 6 o’clock and day/night indicator at 12 add further visual motion.
| Position | Indication |
|---|---|
| Near 12 o’clock | Day of the week, shown retrograde |
| Left side | 24-hour second time zone, shown retrograde |
| Right side | Date, shown retrograde |
| At 6 o’clock | Small seconds, shown retrograde, alongside the moonphase display |
| At 12 o’clock | Day/night indicator |
WatchTime’s coverage of the collection describes the same four-function layout and identifies the moonphase and day/night displays. The result is information-rich and more animated than a conventional three-hand dress watch, though it also gives the dial more to take in. WatchTime’s collection coverage

Movement and controls
Fratello identifies the automatic movement as Longines caliber L707.2, based on ETA A07 L31. WatchTime describes the L707 as an ETA-produced movement exclusive to Longines. In Fratello’s experience, the crown handled winding and time setting while small pushers on the case corrected the complications; the reviewers found setup easier than the number of indications might suggest.
That hands-on impression is not a setting procedure. If adjusting a particular watch, consult the manual for its exact reference and follow its instructions; do not assume a safe correction window or sequence from the dial layout alone.

How large does it wear?
The steel case measures 44 mm in diameter, according to Fratello and WatchTime’s 2012-era coverage. Fratello describes it as thick and recommends trying it on before buying. The reviewer did not find the diameter too large personally, but found the polished bracelet heavy and shiny, and preferred the idea of wearing the watch on leather. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a universal fit judgment.
Period configurations included a steel bracelet or an alligator strap with deployant clasp; WatchTime lists black or brown alligator straps as well as a steel bracelet. On a pre-owned watch, judge the actual example: case thickness and wrist presence, bracelet weight, preferred strap, dial legibility, and the condition of the case and bracelet all matter.

What did it cost, and what is that figure worth today?
Fratello reported a price of €2,950 in 2012. The review also gave an approximate conversion of about $3,700 at the time, while noting it did not have the official US list price. Neither figure establishes the watch’s current retail price or pre-owned value.
For context only, Longines’ current US page for the separate Master Collection Moonphase reference L2.909.4.97.6 lists $3,450, a 40 mm case, up to 72 hours of power reserve and 3 bar water resistance. Those specifications and that price belong to the Master Collection watch, not the Saint-Imier; the page does not establish that it is a successor. Longines Master Collection Moonphase product page

What to check when buying a pre-owned example
The 2012 review establishes the model’s period references and layout, but does not establish the condition or service history of any watch currently offered for sale. Because this is a mechanically complex watch and its age varies by example, make the purchase decision around the particular piece and the seller’s evidence.

- Confirm the reference and dial. Match the case or documentation to the stated reference, and check whether the dial and hands correspond to the seller’s description.
- Assess condition in person or through clear, detailed images. Look closely at the case, polished surfaces, crystal, dial, hands, crown, pushers, bracelet and clasp, or the strap and deployant clasp.
- Ask for service documentation. Request dated records and clarify what work was done. Do not infer service condition from appearance alone.
- Check what is included. Confirm whether the watch comes with its bracelet or strap, any spare bracelet links, clasp, box, papers and other accessories the seller advertises.
- Review the seller’s terms. Establish the return policy, warranty if any, shipping and insurance arrangements, and how authenticity concerns are handled.
- Compare current asking prices for comparable examples. Account for reference, condition, documented service, included accessories, seller terms and the actual strap or bracelet configuration; the 2012 price is not a present-day valuation.
