Meta’s December 16, 2024 v11 software update added three features to Ray-Ban Meta glasses: Live AI, Live Translation and Shazam music recognition. Live AI and translation began as experimental Early Access features for eligible users in the United States and Canada; Shazam had a broader launch within those two countries. Meta has since announced further changes, but its later plans should not be mistaken for proof that every feature or language is available to every owner today.
What Meta announced in the v11 update
This was a software update, not a new glasses model. The three additions were related in how Meta presented them, but they do different jobs: Live AI uses visual context during an active conversation, Live Translation helps with spoken conversations, and Shazam identifies music.
Meta’s December 16, 2024 announcement described the features and their initial rollout. It also warned that the experimental AI features might make mistakes.
How Live AI worked
Earlier Meta AI interactions could answer a question about something the wearer asked the glasses to look at. Live AI added ongoing visual context during an activated session: the wearer could ask about what was in view, follow up without repeating “Hey Meta” each time, and shift the conversation to another subject or return to an earlier one.

Where it could help
- Cooking: Ask about visible ingredients or request a follow-up while keeping hands free.
- Gardening: Ask about a plant or its placement, while treating any identification or care advice as a suggestion to verify.
- Travel: Ask about a landmark or nearby surroundings without taking out a phone.
“Continuous” describes the visual context available during a Live AI session; it does not mean the assistant is automatically analyzing everything around the wearer all the time. Meta’s announcement discussed proactive suggestions as a future direction, not as a guaranteed launch capability.
How Live Translation worked—and its launch limits
At launch, translation covered English paired with Spanish, French or Italian. The glasses could play translated speech through their open-ear speakers, while a transcript could appear on the connected phone. The feature was designed for spoken conversations, not simply for translating signs or other written text.
Those language options were narrow, and the announcement does not establish universal language detection or support for every direction and setting. Background noise, overlapping speakers, accents, idioms and fast conversation can all make spoken translation less dependable. Check the languages and requirements shown in the current Meta app before relying on it for travel or an important conversation.

Shazam was the simplest addition
Wearers could ask, “Hey Meta, what is this song?” to identify nearby music hands-free. Shazam is a music-recognition integration, not a generative-AI feature; Meta announced it alongside the AI additions. At launch, it was available in the United States and Canada without the same Early Access restriction as Live AI and Live Translation.

Recognition can fail when music is too quiet, distorted, live, remixed or drowned out by other sound. It is a convenient shortcut when it works, not a guarantee that every track in every environment will be identified.

Meta’s March 31, 2026 product update also discussed nutrition tracking, prescription-oriented Ray-Ban Meta styles and hands-free WhatsApp summaries for Early Access users. These developments make the 2024 announcement a dated snapshot, not a complete account of the glasses’ later software. For the translation expansion in particular, distinguish the announced 20-language plan from verified availability on a particular model, account, software version and location.
How to check whether your glasses have the features
Meta’s app labels and setup steps can change, so use the current app rather than relying on an old menu path or app-version number.
- Confirm that your glasses are a supported Ray-Ban Meta model, then charge and pair them with your phone.
- Install the latest Meta app available for your phone and update the glasses’ software.
- In the app, check whether Early Access is offered for your account and location. Live AI and Live Translation were Early Access features at launch; owning the glasses alone did not guarantee access.
- Review the feature settings and any current language options. If the app requires language resources or a selection, complete that setup before testing.
- Try the feature somewhere quiet and low-stakes first. For translation, confirm that the needed language pair is listed; for Shazam, play music clearly enough for the glasses to hear.
If a feature is missing, check the glasses’ update status, phone pairing, app version, account eligibility and regional rollout before assuming the hardware is faulty. Availability can also change as Meta updates software.

Privacy, accuracy and practical trade-offs
Camera and microphone context
Live AI relies on camera and microphone interaction during an active session. People nearby may not understand that the wearer is asking an assistant about the scene or using translation. Be considerate in sensitive settings, avoid treating the glasses as an invisible recording tool, and follow local recording, privacy and consent laws. An indicator on a device does not by itself settle every legal or social question.
Answers are not authoritative
Meta cautioned that its experimental AI features could be wrong. Misidentification is possible with objects, plants, food, landmarks or text; translations can miss meaning; and confident-sounding output is not proof of accuracy. Verify consequential information rather than relying on the glasses for professional, safety-critical or medical advice.
Audio has limits
Open-ear audio keeps the wearer’s ears uncovered, but it can be difficult to hear in traffic, crowds, restaurants or wind. Nearby people may also hear audio responses. A phone transcript can help when listening is difficult, but it does not make an incorrect translation correct.

Power and connectivity
Live visual interaction may draw more power than occasional voice questions, and a session can be affected by battery or connectivity limits. Battery life varies with model, software and use; the launch-era estimate of roughly 30 minutes for Live AI should not be treated as a universal specification. Have another way to navigate or communicate when a dependable connection or translation is essential.
Who should consider buying them for these features?
Ray-Ban Meta glasses make most sense for someone who already wants camera glasses with open-ear audio, hands-free capture, calls, music and voice interaction, and sees AI as an occasional extra. The Live AI examples—asking about what is in view or continuing a hands-free conversation—are more useful when convenience matters more than guaranteed precision.
Be cautious if your main reason to buy is dependable multilingual interpreting, professional-grade identification, a display in the lenses, or discreet recording. Early Access features can change, and purchase does not guarantee access to them. Check current model and regional support before deciding; Meta’s AI glasses page reflects a changing lineup and pricing, so a displayed promotion should not be treated as a permanent price.
