Xiaomi announced the Mi Band 5’s international rollout on July 15, 2020, using the name Mi Smart Band 5. The launch began in Europe and the UK, with a European recommended price of €39.99 and early offers of €34.99 in some markets. One important difference: the standard international model did not include NFC, SpO₂ measurement or Amazon Alexa integration at launch.
When did the Mi Band 5 launch outside China?
The international announcement came on July 15, 2020, about a month after Xiaomi unveiled the tracker in China. The overseas rollout started in mid-July, but country and retailer availability did not begin everywhere on the same day. Launch reporting covered Europe and the UK; a worldwide announcement should not be mistaken for confirmed retail availability in every country, including the United States.
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| June 11, 2020 | Xiaomi announced the Mi Band 5 in China. TechCrunch reported the announcement. |
| June 18, 2020 | Sales began in China, according to Tech Advisor’s launch coverage. |
| July 15, 2020 | Xiaomi announced international availability, with Europe and the UK among the first confirmed markets. Android Authority covered the launch and pricing. |
| Mid-to-late July 2020 | Sales and pre-sale dates varied by market and retailer. Some European sales were reported from July 16, while pre-sales in certain markets, including the UK, were reported for July 20. See Notebookcheck’s report. |
What did it cost in the launch markets?
There was no single international price. The European recommended launch price was €39.99, with a €34.99 introductory offer in some markets. Those are historical launch prices, not a current price or a US MSRP. In China, the standard version launched at about RMB 189 and the NFC edition at about RMB 229. Android Authority reported the European prices; TechCrunch reported the standard Chinese price, and Tech Advisor reported the Chinese NFC price.
Xiaomi’s India site later listed the band at ₹2,499, but that regional listing is not evidence of the original July 2020 launch price there. Prices converted into dollars in launch coverage were estimates, not an official US price.

Mi Band 5 or Mi Smart Band 5: what exactly launched?
The product was called Mi Band 5 in China and Mi Smart Band 5 in international markets. Xiaomi’s global specifications identify the international model as XMSH10HM. The names refer to the same generation, but imported Chinese units and official international units can differ in hardware, firmware, packaging and regional services. Xiaomi’s global product page and official specifications describe the international model.
What changed from the Mi Band 4?
The Mi Smart Band 5 refined the familiar tracker rather than turning it into a full smartwatch. Its most visible change was a larger color display; the charging design also became more convenient, while exercise and wellness tracking expanded.

Enjoy incredibly smooth and seamless interaction with crisp, color-accurate images, right on your wrist.
- Display: A 1.1-inch AMOLED screen with 126 × 294 resolution. Xiaomi said it offered about 20% more display area than the prior generation.
- Charging: A magnetic charger connects to the tracker body, so you do not need to remove the body from its strap to charge it.
- Exercise: Eleven sports modes, including yoga, rowing, jump rope, elliptical, indoor cycling, swimming and running.
- Wellness tracking: 24-hour heart-rate monitoring, sleep tracking that includes REM sleep and naps, menstrual-cycle and ovulation tracking, stress monitoring, breathing exercises and Xiaomi’s PAI activity score. These are wellness features, not medical diagnosis tools.
- Everyday functions: Phone notifications, alarms, weather, music controls, a remote photo shutter and a phone-finding feature.
- Water resistance: A 5 ATM rating; Xiaomi described it as suitable for showering and swimming, but not diving or sauna use.
International and Chinese models: the key differences
The feature list buyers saw in China did not carry over in full to the standard international model. At the global launch, coverage reported that the international version omitted NFC, SpO₂ blood-oxygen measurement and Amazon Alexa integration. The Chinese NFC edition was a separate, higher-priced variant. Android Authority’s launch report and Notebookcheck’s report describe the omissions.
| Feature | International Mi Smart Band 5 at launch | Chinese NFC edition |
|---|---|---|
| Color AMOLED display | Yes | Yes |
| Magnetic charging | Yes | Yes |
| Eleven sports modes | Yes | Yes |
| NFC | No | Yes; payment and access functions depend on region and supported services. |
| SpO₂ measurement | Not included at launch | Reported on the Chinese model; confirm the specific unit and firmware. |
| Amazon Alexa | Not included at launch | Reported on the Chinese model; availability depends on region and firmware. |
NFC hardware alone does not guarantee that contactless payments or access cards will work where you live. Before importing, check that the specific unit has NFC, that its firmware and Xiaomi service support your region, and that your bank, transit system or access-card standard is supported. Changing an app’s region cannot add NFC hardware to a standard global unit.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Was it worth waiting for—or upgrading to?
For Mi Band 4 owners
The larger screen, magnetic charging and added tracking modes were practical refinements, but the standard international model retained the basic notification-and-activity-tracker experience. If the Mi Band 4 still met your needs, the changes alone were not an automatic reason to upgrade—particularly if you were waiting for NFC or SpO₂.
Rank #4
For first-time tracker buyers and casual exercisers
At its 2020 European launch price, it offered a useful mix of exercise modes, everyday alerts and wellness tracking in a light band. It was designed as a basic tracker, not a full smartwatch: it had no standalone cellular connection or full app ecosystem, and on-device interaction was limited.
For buyers who need payments or access cards
Do not assume the international model supports NFC. An imported Chinese NFC unit may be worth considering only after confirming its precise hardware, regional firmware and compatibility with the payment or access service you intend to use.

For swimmers and health-focused buyers
The 5 ATM rating and swimming mode suit the uses Xiaomi specified, but the rating is not permission for every water activity: Xiaomi excluded diving and sauna use. Heart-rate, sleep, stress and menstrual-cycle functions are wellness tools, not medical monitoring or diagnosis.
What to check before buying an imported or old-stock unit
The Mi Smart Band 5 is a 2020 model, so remaining stock may be old, used or described imprecisely. If you specifically want this generation, check the details before paying:
- Confirm the model number and whether the listing is for a Chinese NFC edition or the standard international model.
- Ask what language and firmware the unit supports, and whether its services work in your country.
- Verify seller authorization, return terms and the regional warranty; gray-market stock may have different packaging, charger or support.
- Compare the asking price with newer trackers available through your local Xiaomi store. The old European launch prices are historical reference points, not proof of today’s value or availability.
For the international model’s official description and specifications, consult Xiaomi’s product page and specifications page; a global product listing does not establish that it is sold in every country.
