Meta is widening live translation on its smart glasses, but the expansion is not a universal switch: what works depends on the glasses model, language, country, app and rollout status. Earlier Ray-Ban Meta models translate speech through open-ear speakers, with downloaded language packs enabling offline translation; Meta announced 14 additional languages for its 2026 Meta Glasses, naming Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Hindi and Korean. That could make routine travel and family conversations easier, but these glasses are an aid—not a dependable substitute for a human interpreter.
What Meta is expanding
There are three separate changes behind the promise of glasses that work across more language barriers: more translation languages, sales in more countries, and different products with different ways of presenting a translation. An announcement about one does not establish the availability of the others.
Language support
Meta’s 2025 Ray-Ban Meta update described live conversation translation across English, French, Italian, Spanish, German and Portuguese. In June 2026, Meta announced 14 additional live-translation languages for its new Meta Glasses, specifically naming Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Hindi and Korean. Meta’s announcement does not establish that all 14 are enabled simultaneously on every model or in every country, so the full list and its availability should be checked against the particular glasses and app before purchase. Geographic reach
Meta said the 2026 Meta Glasses would launch initially in the United States and Canada and reach additional markets over time. Separately, in April 2025, Meta announced Meta AI access in Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland, with live translation rolling out across supported European markets. Those are distinct rollouts: a country where a product is sold is not automatically a country where Meta AI or every translation language is enabled. Which Meta glasses are being discussed?
“Meta glasses” covers several products. Their translation features should not be treated as interchangeable.

How live translation works in a conversation
On displayless Ray-Ban Meta glasses, the wearer speaks and listens through the glasses’ microphones and open-ear speakers. The phone and Meta AI app are part of setup and device management; Ray-Ban says a compatible smartphone, the app, a Meta account and wireless internet access are required for normal operation. Do not assume both people automatically hear their own language through glasses. On a displayless model, the wearer’s translated audio comes through the speakers; how the other person receives a translated reply depends on the available model and workflow. For Meta Ray-Ban Display, Ray-Ban says the wearer can see translated responses on the glasses or in the app, while the other person can read or listen to the wearer’s translated response through the app. The phone can therefore remain part of the exchange.

Display model: start translation
Ray-Ban documents these controls for Meta Ray-Ban Display specifically:
- Open the display menu and choose Captions, then Speech Translate.
- Download the required language packs the first time they are needed.
- Alternatively, in the Meta AI app, select the glasses, choose Translate, select the languages and tap Start.
- To start by voice, say, “Hey Meta, start live translation.” Stop by saying, “Hey Meta, stop live translation,” or use the app or device controls.
These labels and steps come from the Display FAQ; they should not be assumed to appear on displayless glasses.

Offline translation helps, but requires preparation
Meta said downloaded language packs enable back-and-forth translation even in airplane mode. That is useful where roaming is costly or connectivity is unreliable, but offline capability is not the same as a fully independent device: setup and broader operation still involve a compatible phone and the Meta AI app. Offline support can also depend on the model, language pack, software and rollout.
- Before departure, check that the exact language pair is supported on your model and download its pack while connected.
- Test a short exchange before relying on it away from a network.
- Keep a phone-based translation option available; offline packs do not establish that every Meta AI feature works offline.

“More markets” does not mean worldwide availability
Ray-Ban’s U.S. retail information currently lists Ray-Ban Meta purchase availability in the following 15 markets. This is a retail-market list, not a guarantee that every AI feature or language is enabled in each location; availability can change and regional exclusions may apply.

- Travel: Asking for directions or handling a routine exchange in a shop, restaurant, hotel or transport hub without repeatedly looking down at a phone.
- Family conversations: Making casual exchanges more accessible when relatives use different supported languages.
- Accessibility: Spoken translation and, on the separate Display model, captions can reduce the need to switch attention between a conversation and a phone screen. They are not certified accessibility technology, and accuracy and latency can vary.
- Visible text: Meta AI’s camera assistance can help translate a sign, but pointing a camera at text is a different task from live speech translation.
These uses reduce friction; they do not remove the need to confirm what was understood. Noise, accents, dialects, idioms, overlapping voices and turn-taking can all affect a conversation, and a fluent-sounding translation can still get a detail wrong.
Where translation can fail—and when not to rely on it
- Country or language not enabled: Hardware may be available while Meta AI or the requested language pair is not. An announced language is not proof of access on a particular device, account region or app version.
- Noise or multiple speakers: Traffic, busy restaurants and overlapping voices can make speech harder to capture or translate completely.
- Names and critical details: Verify numbers, addresses, names and instructions rather than assuming they were heard correctly.
- Connectivity or missing pack: Cloud-dependent functions may slow or stop without a connection, and an offline session may fail if the language pack was not installed beforehand.
- Battery and phone dependence: Translation uses microphones, processing, wireless communication and speakers. Real-world endurance varies, and Ray-Ban lists a compatible phone and app among the normal operating requirements.
- Privacy and consent: The glasses use microphones, and camera-based features can capture surroundings. Ray-Ban says captured media has a visible LED indicator and that the app is used to import and manage media. That does not establish that every translation conversation is recorded or stored. Review Meta’s current privacy controls and ask before using translation in a private conversation.
For medical, legal, immigration, emergency or contractual communication, use a qualified human interpreter or an approved professional service. A consumer translation feature is not an authoritative interpreter.
What to check before buying or traveling
- Identify the exact model. Confirm whether it is Ray-Ban Meta, Gen 2, the 2026 Meta Glasses or Meta Ray-Ban Display.
- Check the country and language pair. Verify support for the purchase country, destination and both languages on that model; do not infer availability from an announcement alone.
- Confirm the output you need. Displayless models emphasize spoken output. The Display model has a distinct caption and translated-text workflow.
- Verify offline support in advance. Find and download the required language packs, then test translation before leaving reliable connectivity.
- Check phone and fit requirements. Confirm smartphone compatibility, app and account requirements, prescription options and lens configuration with the retailer.
- Plan for the conversation partner. Work out whether they will hear or read a translated reply through the app or another available method.
- Bring a backup and protect privacy. Keep another translation method for outages or unsupported languages, and agree on whether the glasses may be used during the conversation.
The practical verdict
Meta’s expansion makes smart-glasses translation more promising for everyday exchanges, particularly if the languages a traveler needs are enabled where they are going and can be downloaded for offline use. The meaningful test is not the headline count of new languages: it is whether a specific model, language pair and region work together, and whether the conversation partner can follow the reply. For high-stakes communication, the glasses remain a convenience layer rather than a replacement for professional interpretation.
