The MING 17.09 Blue pairs compact proportions with a striking luminous-crystal design and a genuinely useful independent hour adjustment. Whether that function justifies the watch depends on how often you change time zones: owner Derek Haager found it handy on a flight, but not essential for everyday timekeeping. MING now lists the edition as sold out and says it will not be produced again, so any purchase is a pre-owned-market decision.
What is the MING 17.09 Blue?
This is version 2.0 of MING’s 17.09, a 38 mm automatic watch with a two-part metallic-blue dial and luminous indices etched into the sapphire top crystal. Those channels give the dial a distinctive, almost floating visual effect, while the compact case dimensions make it a plausible daily-wear option for a range of wrists. The movement’s independently adjustable hour hand is the unusual practical feature: it allows a wearer to change the displayed hour without stopping the watch.
The assessment here separates MING’s specifications from individual wear reports. Derek Haager’s firsthand comments come from his owner review; they are his experience with his watch, not a universal fit test.
How does the blue dial and luminous crystal look?
MING describes a two-piece metallic-blue dial: a Clous-de-Paris patterned center and a circular-brushed outer section. Laser-etched indices in the sapphire crystal are filled with Super-LumiNova X1. This puts the luminous markers visually above the dial rather than presenting them as conventional printed or applied indices.

Fratello’s hands-on coverage noted that the blue dial changes character in sunlight and that the lume-filled channels create a floating impression under the crystal. Those are that publication’s visual impressions, not claims of a controlled comparison. MING specifies double-sided anti-reflective coating on the sapphire top crystal.
How does the jumping hour hand work?
The 330.M1 movement has three crown positions. In the middle position, the hour hand advances independently while the rest of the gear train continues running. That makes it possible to adjust the local hour, for example after landing in another time zone, without resetting the minutes. In the outer setting position, both hands move and the movement hacks.

This is a jumping-hour adjustment, not a GMT display: MING lists hours and minutes with an independently adjustable hour hand, but no separate second-time-zone indicator. Haager said the function was handy during a flight, though he also considered it interesting rather than essential. That distinction captures the appeal: frequent travelers may value the convenience, while someone who rarely changes time zones may find a conventional time-only movement sufficient.

Specifications are from MING’s official product archive. The curved strap fitting and 20 × 18 mm sizing are worth checking before buying a replacement; a strap with the same nominal width may not provide the same fit.

How much power reserve does it have, and how do you wind it?
MING’s product page lists 42 hours for calibre 330.M1. Its operating guide describes the automatic SW330-2 as having approximately 40 hours of reserve. These are differently stated figures from MING’s product page and guide, respectively; neither should be silently substituted for the other.
The guide recommends 20–30 turns of the crown to restart the watch after the reserve has run down. It also cautions that simply shaking or wearing the watch is not enough to bring it to a full or near-full wind. Follow the guide’s winding and setting instructions rather than treating movement alone as a reliable way to replenish the reserve.

How does it wear?
Haager reported that his 38 mm example wore comfortably on his 16 cm wrist and described its strap as comfortable. He also characterized the watch as feeling solid and high quality, writing, “The 17.09 looks and feels very high quality, straight out of the gate.” These are his owner impressions, not a guarantee that the watch will fit or feel the same on another wrist.
The published dimensions offer a more useful starting point for judging fit than diameter alone: 10 mm thickness and 43.9 mm lug-to-lug help describe how much case sits across the wrist. If possible, compare all three measurements against a watch you already wear comfortably, and assess the actual strap condition and fit on the specific pre-owned example.

Is the MING 17.09 Blue worth the wait?
Haager published his owner review on September 5, 2022, after saying he waited roughly a year for delivery. He reported a high-quality, solid feel and found the jumping hour useful on a flight, while stopping short of calling the function essential. That makes the watch’s value proposition personal: its unusual dial treatment and compact dimensions may be the main draw, with independent hour adjustment a practical bonus for some owners rather than a must-have complication.
Fratello also praised the changing appearance of the blue dial and the visual effect of the luminous channels, while raising a value question about the modified third-party base movement at launch. Haager recorded CHF 1,950 as the release price in 2022; that is historical context, not a current asking price. Neither assessment establishes that the 17.09 is superior to comparable compact watches.
Is the MING 17.09 Blue still available?
MING’s archive says the watch is sold out, deliveries are complete, and it will not be produced again. The relevant route is therefore the secondary market rather than new stock. Availability, condition and price will depend on individual examples; the archive does not verify any current listing.
For context, Phillips’ Spring 2025 Geneva Sessions catalogue records a circa-2022 reference 17.09 sold for CHF 2,540. That is the result for one auction lot, with the accessories described for that individual example—not a current asking price or a market-wide valuation. Haager’s CHF 1,950 release-price figure and the Phillips result are not directly comparable measures of what a watch should cost today.

What should you check when buying a used example?
- Condition and operation: Ask for clear photographs and a description of the case, crystal, dial, crown, strap and movement operation. Confirm that the independent hour adjustment and outer setting position function as expected.
- Included items: Check whether the watch comes with its original strap, pouch, paperwork and any other items described in the listing. MING’s stated package included a Jean Rousseau Paris strap and Studio Koji Sato leather travel pouch, but contents vary by individual sale.
- Warranty evidence: MING states a three-year limited mechanical warranty for the product. For a pre-owned watch, ask for documents and dates rather than assuming that coverage remains active or transfers.
- Fit: Compare the 38 mm diameter, 10 mm thickness and 43.9 mm lug-to-lug with a watch that fits you. Check the stated 160–210 mm wrist-circumference range and the curved 20 × 18 mm strap fitting.
- Total cost: Consider the specific watch’s condition, completeness, shipping and any applicable fees. A single auction result does not establish a fair price for another example.
