Orient is a Japanese watch brand that began manufacturing watches in 1950 and is known for mechanical watches across dress, everyday and sport styles. It is part of Seiko Epson following a 2017 merger; Orient Star is its related, more elevated mechanical-watch line, not a separate owner. The right Orient depends on the exact reference: compare its movement, case dimensions, water-resistance rating and warranty rather than relying on a collection name alone.
What is Orient?
Orient is a Japanese wristwatch brand with a history of making watches in Japan. Its official brand story describes a range spanning simple, elegant designs and sportier, functional styles, and says Orient is sold in more than 70 countries. The brand emphasizes its mechanical-watch expertise and in-house mechanical movements, though specifications and movement details vary by model. Orient’s brand story
Who owns Orient, and what is Orient Star?
Tama Keiki Co., Ltd. began manufacturing watches in 1950; the company name changed to Orient Watch Co., Ltd. in 1951. Orient Watch merged with Seiko Epson Corporation in 2017. Orient’s official history
Orient Star began in 1951 as a “shining star” mechanical-watch brand. It is a related, generally more elevated line within the Orient family—not a separate owner or unrelated company. Epson’s technology history also records the first “NEW ORIENT” model in 1950 and the original Orient Star in 1951. Epson’s mechanical-watch technology history

How did Orient’s watchmaking develop?
Orient’s history is closely tied to mechanical watchmaking. Epson’s timeline records water-resistance development around the early 1960s and the introduction of the Cal. 46 movement series in 1971. Epson says that movement family was used widely across Orient and Orient Star watches for roughly four decades. That history is useful context, but it does not mean a current watch uses a Cal. 46 movement; check the caliber listed for the exact reference. Epson’s mechanical-watch technology history
What kinds of Orient watches are available?
Named collections include Bambino, Kamasu, Mako, Symphony, Sun & Moon, World Map and Orient Star lines. A distributor catalogue groups Bambino as a dress-style family and Kamasu and Mako among sport or diver-styled watches. Collection names and availability can differ by region and change over time, so verify the exact model and reference with the seller. Orient collection catalogue

Bambino: dress-watch styling
Bambino is the natural place to start if you want a dress-oriented design. Compare the specific watch’s dimensions, dial, crystal, strap and movement rather than assuming every Bambino shares the same specification.
Kamasu and Mako: sport and diver styling
Kamasu and Mako are sportier options, including diver-styled models. Do not infer that a particular watch is suitable for diving from its collection name or appearance: check the water-resistance rating on the exact model and follow the manufacturer’s guidance for its intended use.

Are Orient watches mechanical or automatic?
Orient offers mechanical watches, including automatic watches. In a self-winding mechanical watch, movement of the wearer’s wrist winds the mainspring; some calibers also allow winding by turning the crown. “Automatic” describes a winding method, not a different kind of electronic movement. Orient’s model specifications—not the brand name alone—tell you which movement and winding functions a watch has.

One caliber’s specifications are not universal
An Epson-hosted Orient/Orient Star user guide gives one example of a self-winding, manually windable mechanical caliber: 21,600 oscillations per hour, 20 jewels and a minimum 40-hour continuous operating time when fully wound. For that specified caliber, the guide gives factory static accuracy of +40 to -30 seconds per day under stated conditions. It explains that a watch’s actual rate can vary with orientation, winding, temperature and use. These figures describe that guide’s caliber, not every Orient watch. - Choose the style and use. Consider a Bambino for dress-watch styling, or compare Mako and Kamasu if you prefer sport or diver styling. For other looks, explore Symphony, Sun & Moon, World Map and Orient Star.
- Check movement details. Confirm the caliber, whether it is mechanical or another movement type, whether it is automatic, and whether manual winding is supported. Check the stated power reserve for that particular caliber.
- Compare fit and construction. Look up the reference’s case diameter and thickness, lug width, crystal and included bracelet or strap. Consider whether the dial is legible for your everyday use.
- Verify water resistance for the exact watch. Check the case-back marking and the manufacturer’s guidance for intended use. A diver-style collection label is not a substitute for a model-specific rating.
- Confirm the listing and purchase terms. Match the reference number, regional availability, seller and warranty to the watch being offered. Catalogue listings can change, and similarly named versions may not have identical specifications.
Is Orient a good watch brand?
Orient has a long history of Japanese watch manufacturing and a stated emphasis on mechanical watchmaking. Whether a particular Orient is a good choice depends on the specific watch and what you need from it: fit, design, movement, water resistance, purchase terms and intended use. The available evidence here does not establish a brand-wide current price, service cost, failure rate or independent accuracy ranking, so those should be evaluated for the exact model and market rather than assumed across the brand.
