The Oris Big Crown ProPilot X Calibre 115 is a large, lightweight titanium watch built around an unusually exposed hand-wound movement. Its 240-hour reserve and open mainspring make it compelling as a piece of mechanical design; its 44 mm case and busy skeletonized display make it a less obvious choice for anyone seeking the quick readability of a conventional pilot’s watch.
What makes the Calibre 115 different?
The defining feature is not just the movement’s 10-day reserve, but how visibly the watch presents it. The manually wound Calibre 115 is designed as an open-worked movement, with the mainspring exposed rather than hidden behind a conventional dial. Russell Sheldrake, reviewing the watch hands-on for Oracle Time on October 3, 2019, wrote: “When I got my hands on the model recently, the first thing that struck me was the unique feature about this specific skeleton dial that you really don’t see often enough: the mainspring is completely uncovered.” (Oracle Time)
As Sheldrake describes it, winding lets the wearer see the spring gather around its pinion while the reserve indicator shows the remaining power. That visual connection between winding and stored energy is the watch’s strongest idea: the mechanism is part of the display, not simply a device operating behind it.
Hodinkee’s September 5, 2019 introduction explains that Oris conceived the movement as open-worked and built the multi-piece case around it. It also describes the reserve scale as non-linear, giving more visual attention to the lower-reserve portion of the range. (Hodinkee)

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How the 10-day power reserve works
Oris specifies a 240-hour power reserve, or 10 days, for the manually wound Calibre 115. The reserve indicator at 3 o’clock tracks the remaining stored power; the scale is non-linear rather than a simple evenly divided countdown. The watch also has stop-seconds, so the seconds hand stops when the crown is pulled for setting. These are manufacturer specifications, not results from an independent duration test. (Oris US product listing)
Ten days between windings is useful if you rotate watches or prefer not to wind daily, but it does not make the ProPilot X automatic: it still needs to be wound by hand. The long interval is best understood as added flexibility, while the exposed spring and indicator make winding part of the experience.

Is it practical as a pilot’s watch?
It is aviation-inspired, but its priorities differ from those of a traditional pilot’s instrument. Sheldrake characterizes the X as aviation-inspired rather than a watch intended for actual flying. Hodinkee likewise notes that maximizing legibility is not a primary concern. The open movement and visual complexity are the attraction, but they compete with the clear, immediate time reading many buyers expect from a pilot watch.
Its display comprises central hour and minute hands, small seconds at 7:30, and the power-reserve indicator at 3. If you want a striking mechanical showpiece and are comfortable taking an extra moment to read the dial, that arrangement may suit you. If legibility at a glance is the main requirement, the skeleton architecture is a meaningful compromise rather than a minor styling detail.

Size, titanium and wrist fit
The case measures 44.00 mm across and is made from multi-piece titanium. Sheldrake found the watch exceptionally light despite its diameter, and described the angular, sandblasted case and bracelet as modern and sporty. Those are his subjective impressions, not a published weight measurement or a guarantee of comfort on every wrist. The size remains substantial, so trying it on is sensible if you are unsure about 44 mm.
The case has a domed sapphire crystal on both sides with double-sided anti-reflective coating and a see-through sapphire caseback. Oris specifies 10 bar water resistance. That rating is a product specification, not evidence that an individual example has been tested in use. (Oris UK product listing)
