Yes. Google has upgraded Pixel Watch media control in separate steps: Wear OS 6 improves podcast and playlist controls, Wear OS 7 adds per-app auto-launch and lets you redirect audio to another output, and a newer hand-gesture feature enables play/pause with a double-pinch on supported Pixel Watch models. These features have different software and hardware requirements.
What Wear OS 6 adds
Google’s May 2025 Wear OS 6 announcement says the richer media controls work on devices running Wear OS 5.1 or later. While listening to a podcast, you can fast-forward or rewind. A new menu also provides playlist access and actions including shuffle, like and repeat. Read the full announcement on the Android Developers Blog.
What Wear OS 7 adds
Per-app media auto-launch
Wear OS 7 lets you set auto-launch behavior separately for each app from System Media Controls. When enabled for an app, its controls can appear on the watch when that app starts playback on your paired phone. Google describes this change in its Wear OS 7 developer announcement.
Remote Output Switcher
Wear OS 7 also adds a Remote Output Switcher to System Media Controls. While media is playing on a paired phone, you can change the playback destination from your wrist—for example, between headphones and a home speaker when those outputs are available. The feature is described in Google’s developer announcement and its June 16, 2026 Pixel Watch post.

Google says Wear OS 7 is rolling out to eligible Pixel Watch devices, but the cited announcement does not list every model or establish identical timing for every region. Check your watch’s update status rather than assuming all models received it simultaneously.
Which requirement applies to each feature?
| Feature | Requirement stated by Google | Where it operates |
|---|---|---|
| Podcast fast-forward/rewind; playlist, shuffle, like and repeat menu | Wear OS 5.1 or later | On-watch media controls for supported playback |
| Per-app auto-launch preferences | Wear OS 7 | System Media Controls on the watch, for playback started on a paired phone |
| Remote Output Switcher | Wear OS 7 | Switches the phone’s active playback output from the watch |
| Double-pinch play/pause | Pixel Watch 3, 4 or 5 with Wear OS 6.1 or later | Hand gesture; no screen tap required |
Wear OS 6’s controls, Wear OS 7’s routing tools and the double-pinch gesture are separate features. Installing one does not imply that the others are available.

How to use double-pinch for play and pause
On a supported Pixel Watch, touch your index finger and thumb together twice. Google lists the action as “Play or Pause music (Double pinch).” Hand gestures are enabled by default, and you can manage them on either the watch or the phone app.
- On the watch, open Settings → Gestures → Hand gestures.
- In the Pixel Watch app, open Settings → Gestures → Hand gestures.
- Turn Double pinch on or off; the same screen also includes Wrist turn.
- Make sure your watch apps are up to date if the gesture does not respond.
Google’s model and setup details are in Control your Pixel Watch with hand gestures.

What about always-on-display controls?
Android Central reported on December 8, 2025 that Google Clock version 6.11 added play/pause and next/previous controls to the always-on display. That report described the rollout as limited, so AOD media buttons should not be treated as a universal Pixel Watch capability without checking the current Clock version and device availability. See the Android Central report for the reported rollout.

Practical expectations
- For podcast seeking and playlist actions, verify that the watch is on Wear OS 5.1 or later.
- For automatic control surfaces and output switching, verify Wear OS 7 and wait for the update to reach your specific eligible model and region.
- For hands-free play/pause, verify that you own a Pixel Watch 3, 4 or 5 and are running Wear OS 6.1 or later.
- Output switching depends on the playback devices exposed by the paired phone; the watch is controlling the phone’s media session rather than replacing the phone or headphones.
