Its new element-based editor, Wear OS 3 readiness and improved layout tools were especially useful for Galaxy Watch 4 owners and advanced designers. The major drawback was equally clear: the update ended support for Samsung’s Tizen watches, including the Galaxy Watch 2, Galaxy Watch 3 and Galaxy Watch Active families.
Pujie’s launch announcement and the official 5.0 changelog document both the redesign and the compatibility cutoff.
What Pujie Black 5.0 changed
Pujie Black lets users build watch faces from scratch or modify designs from its library. Version 5.0 moved the app’s core design model to a single list of elements. Watch hands, graphics, tick marks, numbers, digital clocks, date labels, progress circles, indicators and tap targets could all be managed as elements rather than through unrelated editor systems.
That architectural change is why the release deserved the “major” label used in contemporary coverage such as Droid Life’s March 2022 report. It changed how faces were assembled, not merely how they looked.

The element-based editor was the centerpiece
One ordered list for the whole face
In the new model, each component occupied a position in one ordered element list. Designers could control drawing order—placing a hand above a graphic, for example—or add several instances of a component such as digital clocks or watch hands. This made layered layouts and repeated data displays substantially easier to construct.
More room for advanced designs
The unified structure also gave custom elements a more consistent foundation for automation. Existing presets were automatically converted to the new format, so users were not expected to rebuild every saved face manually. Automatic conversion was an intended migration path, not a guarantee that every unusually complex preset would render identically; important designs were still worth checking after the update.
Tools aimed at serious designers
Global variables and functions
Designers could define reusable global variables and functions inside custom elements. Reusing those values or routines across parts of a face reduced duplication and made data-driven or conditional designs easier to maintain. This expanded Pujie’s automation system, although it should not be confused with an unrestricted general-purpose programming environment.

Icon layer
Version 5.0 added an icon layer with large Material Design Icons and Fluent Design Icons collections. Designers could add familiar symbols directly instead of preparing every icon as a separate imported image asset.
More data tags
The changelog added tags for seconds, milliseconds, last known altitude, rain volume, metric rain volume, wind speed, metric wind speed, and current, hourly and daily weather forecast objects. Seconds and milliseconds enabled finer timing effects; the structured weather objects gave custom elements more information for conditional displays. The sources do not specify a common refresh interval or battery cost for each tag.
Animation controls
Elements could animate toward their equivalent position in the other watch view, such as the transition between interactive and ambient modes. Designers could also set a target position, scale and rotation manually. These controls offered deliberate per-element transitions rather than only a fixed collection of animation presets.

Dark mode for the editor
Dark mode applied to Pujie’s design interface, making phone-side editing more comfortable in low-light conditions. It was a user-interface option, not a new rendering mode for the watch face itself.
Better support for modern watch shapes
Wear OS 3 and Galaxy Watch 4
Pujie announced 5.0 as ready for Wear OS 3 watches, including the Galaxy Watch 4. That mattered because Samsung’s newer generation had moved from Tizen to Wear OS. The announcement was a developer compatibility statement, not a promise that every Wear OS 3 model would behave identically.
Round, square and rectangular previews
The phone app added rectangular preview modes alongside round and square layouts. This helped designers working with watches such as the Oppo Watch and Xiaomi Mi Watch judge proportions before sending a face to the watch. A rectangular preview improves layout planning; it does not mean every rectangular model has the same screen dimensions or universal support.

The serious catch: Tizen support ended
Version 5.0 could not support the Tizen watch app. The developer said Pujie had been removed from the Galaxy Store, so the Tizen component could not receive the update needed for the new system. As a result, presets created in 5.0 could not be used on the affected watches.

For a Tizen owner, this was not a small missing feature. Updating the phone-side app could break a workflow that depended on sending newly edited faces to the watch. The detailed device list is in the 5.0 changelog and Pujie’s Tizen and Galaxy Watch FAQ.

Pujie said older presets would be converted automatically into the new element format. That spared most users from recreating their libraries by hand. After updating, designers should open their important faces and verify layers, positions and transitions, particularly when a design used complicated custom elements. Conversion could not overcome the separate Tizen limitation: a converted face still could not run on a Tizen watch whose app could not be updated.

Should you have installed 5.0?
Good reasons to update
- You owned a Galaxy Watch 4 or another Wear OS 3 watch supported by Pujie’s announcement.
- You wanted multiple clocks, hands or graphics with precise layer ordering.
- You built automated faces using variables, functions, weather data or detailed timing.
- You designed for a rectangular watch and needed a more appropriate phone preview.
- You wanted editor dark mode or more deliberate ambient/interactive animations.
Reasons to pause
- Your watch was a Gear S3, Gear Sport or a Tizen Galaxy Watch or Active model.
- Your work depended on the Galaxy Store’s Tizen version of Pujie.
- You had a large collection of complex legacy presets and could not quickly inspect converted results.
The practical verdict in 2022 was straightforward: 5.0 was a strong upgrade for Wear OS 3 users and ambitious designers, but it was not an upgrade path for Tizen owners.
Installation and account checks
Pujie’s support guidance says the phone and watch should run the corresponding Pujie version. If an installation or purchase is not recognized, use this sequence:
- Confirm that the same Google account is active on the phone and watch.
- Install the matching Pujie version on both devices.
- Restart both devices if Play Store synchronization is delayed.
- Do not buy a second copy merely because the watch-side Play Store has not synchronized.
- If the problem persists, clear Play Store data or use Pujie’s Play Store troubleshooting guidance.
The advice is about account and installation synchronization; it does not restore Tizen compatibility.
Later history: Pujie is no longer simply “Pujie Black”
The 2022 release should not be confused with the product’s later platform changes. In 2024, Pujie introduced a free-to-try model. Free users could design faces and browse the library, but were limited to saving one watch-face design and using roughly 15 library faces. Premium access added unlimited saved designs, the full library, customization of library faces, watch storage, shared-face imports and Tasker integration. The official announcement describes the access model; it does not establish one dependable current U.S. price.

The Wear OS 6 announcement identifies Galaxy Watch 8 and Galaxy Watch 8 Classic as initial compatible devices and directs older Wear OS 4/5 watches to the legacy version until they receive Wear OS 6. Those are later product generations, not features delivered by Black 5.0.
Before installing anything today, identify whether your watch is Tizen, Wear OS 4-or-older/legacy, or Wear OS 6+. Then use Pujie’s current product information and the matching Wear OS 6+ or legacy guidance. Pujie Black 5.0 remains best understood as the 2022 element-system and Wear OS 3 transition—not the current app version.
