What Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 Promised Smartwatches—and What It Delivered

Qualcomm’s W5+ Gen 1 promised better battery life and performance through a hybrid 4nm-and-22nm design. Here’s what the claims meant, which watches adopted it, and why it is no longer Qualcomm’s newest wearable platform.

Announced on July 19, 2022, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 was built to improve smartwatch battery life and performance with a 4nm main processor paired with a separate 22nm always-on co-processor. Qualcomm advertised up to 50% longer battery life and 2× performance versus the previous generation, but those were platform claims—not guarantees for every finished watch. As of August 2026, W5+ Gen 1 is a previous-generation platform, not Qualcomm’s newest wearable chip.

What Qualcomm announced

Qualcomm introduced two related wearable platforms in July 2022: Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 and the higher-end Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1. The distinction matters. The W5+ added an always-on co-processor to the main application processor; the standard W5 did not. Qualcomm positioned both for wearable devices, while the W5+ hybrid design was intended to balance demanding workloads with lower-power everyday tasks. Qualcomm’s launch announcement and its W5+ product brief describe the platforms.

Qualcomm called the W5+ a platform rather than just a single processor. Its relevant components include a 4nm application processor and 22nm co-processor, along with graphics, memory, connectivity, location and signal-processing blocks.

How the 4nm processor and co-processor were meant to work

The main SoC was designed for computationally demanding work. The lower-power co-processor was meant to handle routine tasks—such as display behavior, sensor activity, audio and notifications—without waking the main processor for every small job. Think of it as a companion for selected low-intensity workloads, not a second full smartwatch CPU.

Amazfit Active 2 Premium Smart Watch 1.32" Sapphire Glass, GPS, iOS/Android
  • STYLISH DESIGN, BRIGHT DISPLAY: The sleek stainless steel build blends classic style with workout durability, while the bright 1.32" AMOLED display keeps your data easy to read, even under bright sunlight.
  • PRECISE HEART RATE AND SLEEP TRACKING: Amazfit's BioTracker technology tracks your heart rate and sleep data with accuracy that previous sensors just can't match.
  • UP TO 10 DAYS OF BATTERY LIFE: With long battery life that lasts up to 10 days with typical use, nightly recharges are a thing of the past.
  • FREE MAPS WITH TURN DIRECTIONS: Stay on-track with free downloadable maps, and get turn-by-turn guidance on-screen or via your Bluetooth headphones. Enjoy ski maps for global resorts, including guidance for cable cars, slopes, and more.
  • FASTER AND MORE ACCURATE GPS TRACKING: 5 satellite positioning systems ensure fast GPS connection and accurate positioning whenever you're out running, walking, cycling or hiking.

This division was central to Qualcomm’s power-efficiency pitch: leave the main processor available for richer interactions and use the co-processor for suitable background or ambient work. Qualcomm also described low-power states called Deep Sleep and Hibernate, low-power islands for Wi-Fi, GNSS and audio, and a low-power Bluetooth 5.3 architecture. Whether a watch used these capabilities effectively depended on its hardware and software implementation. Qualcomm’s platform page outlines the power features.

What the launch claims actually meant

Qualcomm’s claim or specification How to interpret it
Up to 50% longer battery life versus the previous generation A Qualcomm platform comparison, not an independent result or a promise that every W5+ watch would last 50% longer than every older watch. Qualcomm platform page.
30–60% lower power in typical use cases Qualcomm’s separate power-consumption claim. Lower power consumption and longer runtime are related but are not interchangeable figures. Qualcomm platform page.
2× performance Qualcomm’s aggregate comparison across platform areas; it does not mean every app or task runs twice as fast. Launch announcement.
2× richer features Qualcomm’s positioning for capabilities the platform could enable, not a fixed feature set included in every watch. Launch announcement.
Smaller silicon and board footprint Qualcomm’s materials cite a 30% smaller SoC area, 35% smaller chipset area and 40% smaller core PCB area; its launch summary also used a broader 30%-smaller design claim. These are component or board-area comparisons, not a 30% reduction in watch-case dimensions. Platform page and product brief.

The 50% battery headline should not be read as “every watch gets two or three days.” The final result depends on the whole device: battery capacity, display size and settings, LTE and Wi-Fi activity, GPS use, calls and music, sensor sampling, firmware and operating-system behavior, and the manufacturer’s power-management choices. An always-on co-processor may help with suitable ambient tasks, but a bright display or heavy GPS and LTE use can still consume substantial power.

Qualcomm’s launch materials also gave example runtime gains based on different battery capacities. Those were projections, not independent tests of retail watches. Droid Life’s launch coverage discussed those examples. A chip’s efficiency cannot, by itself, establish how long a particular finished watch will last.

Performance and the experiences it could enable

The product brief lists a quad-core CPU clocked up to 1.7GHz, an Adreno 702 GPU and LPDDR4 memory operating at 2133MHz. Qualcomm’s 2× performance language covered multiple areas, including CPU, GPU, camera, memory, video and audio. It is best understood as a broad platform comparison with the prior generation, not a claim that every interface action or app would be twice as quick.

Qualcomm presented the platform as capable of supporting richer watch faces and animations, real-time maps, two-way video calls in some wearable categories, more responsive audio and notifications, and machine-learning-assisted sensing. Its promotional examples included 3D watch faces and fall detection. These are potential uses, not features guaranteed by the processor: a manufacturer still needs appropriate sensors, components, software and—in relevant cases—regulatory clearance. Qualcomm’s W5 launch explainer describes those use cases.

Technical capabilities at a glance

Area W5+ Gen 1 detail
Main processing 4nm quad-core CPU, up to 1.7GHz
Graphics and memory Adreno 702 GPU; LPDDR4 at 2133MHz
Companion processing 22nm always-on co-processor, including a 2.5D GPU
Imaging Dual ISPs with support for cameras up to 16 megapixels
Connectivity and location Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi, integrated location capabilities including dual-band positioning support; optional 4G LTE configurations
Signal and machine-learning processing Qualcomm Hexagon DSPs, a U55 machine-learning core and a HiFi5 DSP

These are platform capabilities, not a checklist of parts or features guaranteed in every product. For example, camera support does not mean a watch has a camera, and optional LTE does not mean every regional model includes the same modem configuration. Specifications are from Qualcomm’s product brief.

Smaller components could mean a different watch—not necessarily a smaller one

Reduced SoC, chipset and core PCB area gave manufacturers design options. They could make a smaller device, fit a larger battery or more sensors, add components such as LTE, a speaker or a larger antenna, or use the space for a more robust casing. The area figures do not predict the final case size: what the buyer gets depends on how the manufacturer spends that space.

Health sensing and software still depended on the manufacturer

The W5+ included processing intended to support machine-learning and sensor workloads, but the chip does not establish the accuracy of a heart-rate, sleep, blood-oxygen, ECG or fall-detection feature. Those depend on the watch’s sensors, algorithms, calibration and implementation; some features may also require regulatory clearance. Likewise, Qualcomm’s support for Wear OS, Android Open Source Project software and RTOS describes platform options. It does not mean every W5+ watch combines those systems in the same way. The operating experience and support policy are product-specific.

Which watches used W5-family platforms?

At launch, Qualcomm named OPPO and Mobvoi as early customers, said the OPPO Watch 3 series would use Snapdragon W5, and said Mobvoi planned a flagship based on W5+ Gen 1. Qualcomm also said 25 customer designs were in the pipeline at the time. That was a count of planned designs in 2022, not 25 confirmed retail watches. Qualcomm’s announcement records the launch plans.

The first smartwatch Qualcomm identifies as powered by W5+ Gen 1 is the Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 5. Qualcomm lists its battery life as up to 80 hours; that is a product-level claim for the finished watch, not a measurement attributable to the processor alone. Qualcomm’s device finder also lists the Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro and Huawei Watch 4 Pro among W5+ Gen 1 products. See the TicWatch Pro 5 device page and the Snapdragon Wear device finder.

The OPPO Watch 3 and Watch 3 Pro are useful examples of why W5 and W5+ should not be conflated: they used the standard W5 platform, not W5+ Gen 1, and were initially confirmed for China with OPPO’s proprietary operating system rather than Wear OS. Their availability and suitability therefore depend on region. Wareable’s OPPO Watch 3 coverage gives the product context.

Did W5+ Gen 1 fix Wear OS?

It addressed real hardware constraints by moving to a newer process node, adding a low-power companion processor and giving manufacturers more room for performance and design flexibility. That could support a more capable watch with better efficiency. It could not control Wear OS quality, app optimization, health algorithms, update length, charging behavior or an OEM’s software decisions. A watch using W5+ could still disappoint if its battery was small, its display or LTE use power-hungry, or its software poorly tuned.

That is why the processor name alone cannot establish whether a watch is smooth, lasts a particular number of days, receives long-term updates, or works with a particular phone. Evaluate the complete model and its regional variant, not just the platform branding.

What the chip means to a buyer in 2026

W5+ Gen 1 is historically significant as Qualcomm’s 2022 attempt to improve smartwatch performance and efficiency, but it is no longer the company’s newest wearable platform. Qualcomm announced W5+ Gen 2 in August 2025 and Snapdragon Wear Elite in March 2026. Buyers comparing watches should consider the exact generation and the finished device’s features and support, rather than assuming a Gen 1 model offers the capabilities or support horizon of newer platforms. See Qualcomm’s W5+ Gen 2 announcement and Wear Elite announcement.

  • Check the precise watch model and region; LTE bands, payments, software and health features can vary.
  • Look for battery estimates under the use you actually expect, especially always-on display, GPS and LTE.
  • Confirm the operating-system version, phone compatibility and manufacturer’s update policy.
  • Check that the health features you need are available in your region and on that exact model.
  • Compare the price and support prospects with newer-generation watches; an older chip is not automatically a poor choice, but it should be priced and supported accordingly.
