What is the Ressence TYPE 3 Marc Newson?
It is a collaboration between Belgian watchmaker Ressence and Australian industrial designer Marc Newson, built on Ressence’s TYPE 3 platform. The Japanese distributor’s launch release described the partnership as bringing Newson’s industrial design together with Ressence’s watchmaking vision, and said the model would go on sale from December 2025. Newson’s design history includes the rounded, elliptical Ikepod watches. In an interview context reported by Wallpaper*, he described Ressence’s early work as a compelling evolution of ideas he had explored at Ikepod. The TYPE 3 MN is a Ressence collaboration, not an Ikepod product.
How the oil-filled display is intended to work
The watch’s defining feature is Ressence’s patented ROCS, short for Ressence Orbital Convex System. Its rotating discs carry the indications in an oil-filled upper chamber. Ressence describes the arrangement as making the display appear to float; Red Dot says the TYPE 3 platform uses four biaxial satellites beneath a domed sapphire crystal, creating the impression that information is projected onto the glass. These are descriptions of the intended optical effect, not independent findings about contrast or legibility at different angles.

The case has no side crown. According to Red Dot’s project page, the watch is adjusted via the case back, reflecting Mintiens’s view that a traditional lateral crown is awkward to handle. That changes how the watch is set and handled: a prospective wearer should try the back-operated method rather than assume the familiar crown routine.
