Review: Diving With the Casio G-Shock Frogman MRG-BF1000R

The titanium MR-G Frogman pairs an unusual joined-hand dive timer with solar and connected features, but its size and basic logging matter when deciding if it fits your needs.

The titanium Casio G-Shock MR-G Frogman MRG-BF1000R-1A is a serious water-resistant analogue watch with useful dive timing and logging—not a dedicated dive computer. Its unusual dive display, where the hour and minute hands move together as one elapsed-time pointer, is designed to make underwater minutes easy to read. Casio specifies ISO 200-metre water resistance; whether the watch suits you also depends on its substantial 56 mm-wide, 132 g titanium case and the limited depth of its logging features.

What the Frogman does underwater

Casio specifies ISO 200-metre water resistance for the MRG-BF1000R-1A. In dive mode, the hour and minute hands overlap and travel together to indicate elapsed dive minutes. The timing function measures in one-second increments up to 1:59:59. That is a distinctive analogue way to track elapsed time, though it does not provide the range of information or functionality of a dedicated dive computer.

Casio also lists surface-time measurement up to 24 hours and capacity for up to 30 dive log records. The paired CASIO WATCHES app provides dive-log and tide-graph features. Its current product page advertises tide data for more than 3,000 locations. These features make the watch more than a conventional time-only diver, but the evidence supports describing it as a watch with dive timing and logging—not as a dive computer or a substitute for one. What one reviewer reported in the water

In a hands-on review published on 22 June 2023, Derek Haager of Monochrome Watches said the display was legible underwater and the large buttons were easy to locate and operate while wearing gloves. He described activating dive mode and using the joined hands to read dive minutes, adding that the concept worked well in practice. He also found that the mode took reading the manual to learn before it became intuitive; these are one reviewer’s observations, not a guarantee of every diver’s experience. Casio G-Shock GWF-A1000C-1AJF FROGMAN Bluetooth Solar Radio Watch
  • The product video shows "fluorine elastomer band", but this product is a composite band (resin x fine resin with metal parts embedded). It also features a double locking one-push tri-fold clasp with an extension mechanism that allows you to easily adjust the band when wearing a wetsuit
  • G-SHOCK "Frogman" series analog display model with ISO standard 200 m submersible waterproofing to support underwater missions
  • Dive mode / Tide graph mode to support diving activities: Dive mode to show diving time and surface rest time. Tide graph mode displays tide information anywhere and current time in that city. Analog display of useful functions for diving activities
  • Bluetooth Radio Solar: Support Bluetooth, standard radio wave time correction. Equipped with tough solar, it is stable to drive various functions
  • Smartphone Link: Dedicated app allows you to easily set tide data around 3000 locations around the world in the app. You can also check the dive logs on your smartphone and enjoy the data measured on the watch side

Logging is useful, but basic

Haager reported that the app log includes basic details such as dive time, start time, interval times and location. He considered it less robust than a dedicated dive computer. If you need computer-style dive information and recordkeeping, the MRG-BF1000R’s timing and log functions do not establish that it can meet that need.

Titanium construction and asymmetrical design

The MRG-BF1000R is the titanium MR-G version of the G-Shock FROGMAN. It retains the range’s asymmetric case, shifted slightly to the left; Casio says this shape is intended to keep wrist movement unrestricted underwater. Casio describes the model as bringing the asymmetric Frogman design into metal form. Casio’s 15 March 2023 launch announcement

The case and bezel are titanium, with individual finishing across a multi-part exterior. Casio’s current product listing specifies a titanium case and bezel, a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, and a Dura Soft fluoro-rubber band. Protective fluoro-rubber buffers separate bezel parts and help absorb impacts; Casio also describes protection around the crown and buttons. The crown and case back screw-lock. Casio says the sapphire crystal is press-fit into the titanium case back to maintain airtightness while allowing radio reception. Its launch announcement counted 76 components in the case construction as of 15 March 2023; that is a dated construction figure, not a claim about a current production change. The band uses a Ti64 titanium alloy buckle and band loop. Casio says it can be removed using the pins and buttons at the lugs for cleaning or changing it. The product information does not establish compatibility with a particular replacement band, so check the exact part before buying one.

Size, weight and everyday features

Casio lists dimensions of 56 × 49.7 × 18.6 mm and a weight of 132 g. Those measurements make fit a key consideration: a large, thick watch may feel imposing on smaller wrists or catch on close-fitting cuffs. The titanium construction does not make this a light or compact Frogman by the published figures. Trying it on, if possible, is a better guide to comfort than judging from the material alone.

Beyond dive timing, Casio lists Tough Solar power, Bluetooth smartphone connection, Multi Band 6 radio timekeeping and ISO 764-compliant magnetic resistance. Functions include automatic time adjustment through the smartphone connection, dual time, tide graph, stopwatch, countdown timer, alarm, date and day display, and a high-brightness LED. The specifications establish the available features, but do not establish battery life across different patterns of use or comparative performance against other watches.

Who should consider it?

  • Consider it if you want the MR-G Frogman’s titanium construction and distinctive analogue elapsed-time display, along with solar, radio-controlled and connected timekeeping features.
  • Think carefully about fit if you prefer a smaller or lighter watch: Casio’s published dimensions and weight are 56 × 49.7 × 18.6 mm and 132 g.
  • Choose a dedicated dive computer for computer-style functionality. The Frogman’s published capabilities are dive timing, surface-time measurement and limited log storage; one reviewer found the app log basic relative to a dedicated computer.
  • Check the price at the time you shop. Monochrome Watches reported USD 5,000 in 2023, but that is historical editorial reporting, not a current retail quotation. No live retailer price or stock status is established here.
