The Seiko Prospex SPB151 and SPB153 are modern interpretations of the 6105 diver often nicknamed “Captain Willard.” Their main reported launch-era distinction is appearance: the SPB151 is black with a steel bracelet, while the SPB153 is olive green with a black silicone strap. Seiko’s UK listing currently displays the SPB153 at £1,050; that is a regional price, not a verified current price for the SPB151.
What are the Seiko Captain Willard SPB151 and SPB153?
They are two references in Seiko’s Prospex diver line, presented as contemporary interpretations of the Seiko 6105. “Captain Willard” is a community nickname rather than an official model name. Hodinkee linked the nickname to the 6105’s association with Apocalypse Now, while noting Seiko did not directly use that film connection in its marketing; Seiko’s lore instead referenced Naomi Uemura’s 1978 North Pole expedition. Hodinkee’s April 14, 2020 introduction provides that context.
What’s the difference between SPB151 and SPB153?
The clearest difference is the color and supplied band configuration reported at launch. Monochrome’s 2020 coverage describes the SPB151 in black on a three-link steel bracelet with a folding clasp and diving extension, and the SPB153 in olive green on a black textured silicone strap with a pin buckle. Offerings can vary by region or over time, so check the exact reference and included band when buying.

Seiko’s UK product listing specifies the SPB153 as follows. The figures describe that reference as listed by Seiko; they should not be treated as current SPB151 specifications.

Seiko lists 42.7 mm across the case, but diameter alone does not tell you how the watch will sit on your wrist. Its 46.6 mm lug-to-lug measurement is the more direct indication of how far it spans wrist-to-wrist, while the 13.2 mm thickness affects how high it stands. Compare all three measurements with a watch you already find comfortable rather than relying on diameter alone. Monochrome’s 2020 launch report gave a 42.8 mm diameter, a slight difference from Seiko’s current UK listing of 42.7 mm.

Does the SPB153 fit a 20 mm strap?
Seiko specifies a 20 mm lug distance, so 20 mm is the relevant nominal strap width to search for. That measurement does not guarantee that every third-party strap will fit cleanly. Check the strap’s end shape and thickness, spring-bar width, and length, along with compatibility for the watch itself. No specific third-party strap is verified here.
How much is the Seiko SPB153?
Seiko’s UK product page displays a price of £1,050 for the SPB153; the page was retrieved in 2026. This is a UK-listed price, not a global price, and it does not establish the current price of the SPB151. See Seiko’s UK SPB153 listing for its product details. The SPB151 and SPB153 prices in the comparison above are their reported 2020 launch prices, not evidence of present-day offers.

Seiko describes the SPB153’s 6R35 as an automatic movement that can also be wound manually, with a stated reserve of approximately 70 hours. Seiko Luxe also lists 21,600 vibrations per hour. Its product copy says: “Following ISO standards for scuba diving to depths of up to 200 meters, this exceptional timepiece can be wound manually or automatically and includes a 24-jewel automatic movement with a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and a power reserve of approximately 70 hours.” Seiko Luxe’s SPB153 page is the source for that vendor statement.

The 200 m / 660 ft figure is Seiko’s stated diver’s water-resistance rating, not an independent pressure-test result for an individual watch. For a specific used or older example, its condition and service history are separate from the published specification.
