They share the family’s automatic Caliber 6R64 and second-time-zone layout, while the available official information does not establish that every reference has the same dial details or edition status. Here’s what the SPB223 is, how its GMT hand works and which specifications Seiko publishes.
What is the Seiko Presage Sharp Edged GMT SPB223?
SPB223J1 is a stainless-steel Presage Sharp Edged Series watch with a mechanical GMT display. Seiko labels it the “Seiko 140th Anniversary Limited Edition” and specifies a production run of 3,500 pieces on its official SPB223J1 product page. That limited-edition designation applies to SPB223J1; it should not be transferred to SPB217, SPB219 or SPB221 without model-specific evidence.
The name can be confusing because Seiko’s February 2021 announcement introduced a group comprising SPB217, SPB219, SPB221 and SPB225, while the official product page identifies SPB223J1 separately as the anniversary edition. The announcement is useful for the family’s movement and operating principle, but it does not make SPB223 interchangeable with SPB225. See Seiko’s 2021 GMT launch announcement.
How does the GMT hand work?
Caliber 6R64 has a 24-hour hand for a second-time-zone display. Read that hand against the dial’s 24-hour scale and the two-color inner ring, which distinguishes day from night. The watch also has a date display at six and a power-reserve indicator at nine.

Adjusting the local hour
Seiko describes the hour hand as independently adjustable: it can be moved to set local time while the minute and seconds hands continue keeping time. The movement also has calendar-linked time-difference adjustment and a stop-seconds function. These are manufacturer-stated features, not a report of hands-on testing.
Movement and reserve
The SPB223J1 uses automatic Caliber 6R64 with manual winding. Seiko specifies 29 jewels and approximately 45 hours of power reserve on the model page. Its 2021 family announcement additionally gives a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour, or eight beats per second.

These are the SPB223J1 figures published by Seiko on its product page. Seiko also specifies stainless steel with super-hard coating, a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the inner surface, Lumibrite on the hands and indices, a three-fold push-button clasp and a transparent screw case back. The 10 bar rating is the published water-resistance specification; it does not, by itself, establish suitability for every water activity.
What distinguishes the Sharp Edged design?
The series pairs angular case and bracelet surfaces with flat polished areas and hairline finishing. Its dial carries an Asanoha pattern, a traditional hemp-leaf motif. In the GMT configuration, the inner day/night ring, date at six and power-reserve display at nine make the additional functions part of the dial layout. How to compare SPB217, SPB219, SPB221 and SPB223
Start with reference-specific product listings rather than assuming all four are cosmetic variants of one watch. Seiko’s materials support the family’s shared GMT concept and movement, and confirm SPB223J1’s anniversary-edition status. They do not establish every reference’s current regional price, stock, or a complete reference-by-reference mapping of dial colors and hand contrasts.

- Dial details: verify the exact dial color and GMT-hand contrast on the specific reference page. Do not infer a complete color mapping from the family announcement alone.
- Fit and construction: use model-specific dimensions and bracelet details. For SPB223J1, Seiko lists a 20 mm lug width, but that alone does not guarantee that every 20 mm strap will fit its end-link interface or suit a particular clasp preference.
- Price and availability: consult a current, dated seller listing for the region where you plan to buy. Seiko’s announcement said the family would be available through boutiques and selected retailers from May 2021; that is historical launch information, not evidence of present stock or price.
