Verdict: The SPB143, SPB147 and SPB149 share the same core 2020 Prospex platform, so the meaningful choice is visual and practical rather than mechanical. Choose the grey SPB143 for the most restrained, adaptable design; the brown-and-gilt SPB147 for a warmer vintage palette on silicone; or the blue-and-yellow SPB149 if its limited-edition color scheme, second strap and 5,500-piece production run matter to you. None is an exact 1965 restoration: each is a modern interpretation of Seiko’s first professional diver.
What the 62MAS reissues represent
Seiko traces its first diver to 1965’s 62MAS. In its March 5, 2020 announcement, Seiko Watch Corporation presented the SPB149 as a contemporary interpretation of that heritage, separate from the more expensive SLA anniversary recreations. The three SPB14x references use the same general design language and technical base, but their colors and supplied straps give them distinctly different personalities.
That distinction matters when reading the word “reissue.” These watches reinterpret the original rather than reproduce its dimensions, movement or every dial and case detail. They are modern Prospex divers intended for current wear, not museum replicas.
Shared specifications
Seiko’s official SPB149 specification lists a 40.5 mm case diameter, 13.2 mm thickness, sapphire crystal, 200 m diver’s water resistance and automatic Caliber 6R35 with a stated 70-hour power reserve. Contemporary coverage gives the same broad platform for the SPB143 and SPB147: 24 jewels, 21,600 vibrations per hour and the 70-hour stated reserve.

Small differences in reported thickness come from measuring methods and individual reviews; they should not be treated as evidence of a materially different case between references. The available evidence does not establish independent accuracy, durability or laboratory performance figures for any of the three.
SPB143: the understated grey option
Dial and supplied configuration
The SPB143 combines a grey dial with a steel bracelet. Its monochrome palette keeps the 62MAS-inspired layout relatively quiet and makes it the least visually assertive member of the trio.
Who it suits
Hodinkee’s 2020 “A Week On The Wrist” review describes the grey dial as versatile and records the reviewer’s personal impressions of the bezel, bracelet, lume and wearing experience. Those are a reviewer’s sample impressions, not independent laboratory results. For a buyer who wants one Prospex diver to work with casual clothing, office wear and different straps, the SPB143 is the natural starting point.

SPB147: brown and gilt with silicone
Dial and supplied configuration
The SPB147 changes the mood with a brown dial, gilt-colored details and a silicone strap. The warm combination leans more deliberately into vintage-style color than the grey SPB143 without changing the shared movement or water-resistance specification.
Who it suits
Choose the SPB147 when dial character is more important than maximum versatility. Brown and gilt can look richer and more period-inspired, while the original silicone strap gives it a purpose-built dive-watch presentation. If you prefer a bracelet for daily wear, factor in the cost and compatibility of an additional option rather than assuming the launch package included one.

Launch price context
US launch coverage reported $1,000 for the SPB147 in 2020. Treat that figure only as historical context, not as a current market quote.
SPB149: blue, yellow and limited-edition packaging
Dial and supplied configuration
The SPB149 uses a blue dial with yellow or gold accents and was supplied with both a steel bracelet and a silicone strap. That two-strap configuration is its most practical package advantage over the SPB147, while the brighter colors make it the least discreet design.

Seiko announced the SPB149 as a 5,500-piece limited edition in 2020. Seiko’s launch statement said: “Powered by Caliber 6R35, which delivers a power reserve of 70 hours, it will be available in June 2020 in a limited edition of 5,500.” The quantity is a production statement from the launch; it does not prove that the watch is scarce, valuable or available in a particular market now. A 2025 retrospective called the model discontinued at that time, but that publication does not establish stock status everywhere in September 2026.

How to decide before buying
- Pick the dial first. Grey is the quietest, brown-and-gilt is the warmest, and blue with yellow/gold accents is the most distinctive.
- Check the original strap package. The SPB143 launched on a bracelet, the SPB147 on silicone, and the SPB149 with both bracelet and silicone. That difference can outweigh a modest price gap if you plan to switch frequently.
- Confirm wrist fit. The 40.5 mm diameter and roughly 13.2 mm official SPB149 thickness create a substantial modern diver presence. Try the exact reference where possible; wrist shape, lug reach and strap flexibility affect comfort more than diameter alone.
- Treat prices as dated and regional. Separate 2020 launch prices from any current retailer or secondary-market quote, and record the country, seller, condition and date for the latter.
- Verify accessories. Before ordering a replacement strap, confirm the exact lug width and end-link or spring-bar compatibility for your reference. A generic “20 mm” listing should not be assumed to fit perfectly without that check.
- Do not pay for an unproven premium. The 5,500-piece SPB149 run is genuine limited-edition information, but the evidence here does not establish current scarcity, resale value or investment performance.
Are there meaningful technical differences?
Not on the published evidence. All three references are presented around the automatic 6R35, 200 m diver’s water resistance and sapphire crystal, with a stated 70-hour reserve. Their strongest differences are the dial treatment, original strap or bracelet and the SPB149’s limited-edition status. Claims that one reference is substantially more accurate, tougher or better sealed would require independent testing that is not established here.
Bottom line: which 62MAS interpretation is right?
Buy the SPB143 if you want the most adaptable and visually restrained version. Buy the SPB147 if brown, gilt details and a silicone-first presentation are the reason you are drawn to the watch. Buy the SPB149 if its blue-and-yellow palette, included bracelet and silicone strap, and documented 5,500-piece production run justify the premium for you. The best choice is therefore the one whose dial and launch configuration you prefer—not the one with a supposedly superior movement or water-resistance rating.
