Sequent Elektron / SuperCharger 2.3 Review: A Self-Charging Hybrid Watch With a Catch

The Sequent Elektron / SuperCharger 2.3 is a niche self-charging hybrid watch, not an Apple Watch rival. Here is what the concept delivers—and what used buyers must verify.

Verdict: the Sequent Elektron / SuperCharger 2.3 is best understood as a niche connected hybrid watch, not an Apple Watch, Garmin, Fitbit or Galaxy Watch substitute. Its appeal is an analog-looking design and a kinetic, self-charging concept. Its risks are equally important: limited smartwatch functions, uncertain long-term app support, battery aging and difficult sourcing in 2026.

Buy one only if you specifically value the watch-first experience and accept used-product compromises. Choose a mainstream smartwatch if you need a bright data screen, dependable notifications, GPS, payments, apps, training tools or clearly supported software.

What the Sequent Elektron / SuperCharger 2.3 is

The naming needs care. “Elektron” refers to Sequent’s hybrid-watch family, while “SuperCharger 2.3” identifies a particular generation or variant. It should not be treated as interchangeable with the Elektron HR 2.2, SuperCharger 2.0 or other Sequent models; specifications and app instructions can differ.

The product is documented as a real review subject associated with aBlogtoWatch, including a segment in the May 25, 2023 episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly (episode listing). The original review page is currently inaccessible, so exact case dimensions, materials, crystal, water-resistance rating, controls, sensor list, launch price and the reviewer’s detailed measurements should not be presented as verified facts here.

What is established is the product category: an analog-style watch that adds connected and activity features while making kinetic energy harvesting its headline technology.

Self-charging: what it means in practice

Kinetic energy, not free energy

“Self-charging” describes motion-based energy harvesting. Movement from wearing the watch is converted into stored electrical energy for its connected functions. It does not mean the watch can operate indefinitely regardless of how it is used. A desk-bound day, travel, extended time off the wrist or storage in a drawer supplies less energy than an active day of wear.

Why cable charging may still happen

A 2025 Ricardo seller reported charging a SuperCharger 2.3 approximately every one to 1.5 months. That is one owner’s experience, not a standardized battery test or a guaranteed interval for every wearer. It nevertheless provides a useful reality check: kinetic charging can reduce charging frequency without eliminating it.

The available evidence does not establish the storage capacity, idle reserve, charging speed, exact charging accessory, behavior after prolonged storage or whether the mechanism combines kinetic harvesting with another source. Confirm those details with the seller or manual before buying a used example.

Battery aging is central to a used purchase

The watch still depends on an internal rechargeable storage component. As that component ages, a previously convenient charging interval can shorten. Replacement procedure, parts availability and service pricing are not verified, so a depleted battery may be a serious economic problem rather than a routine maintenance job.

How “smart” is it?

Until model-specific documentation is available, the safest description is connected hybrid watch or activity-tracking smartwatch, not full smartwatch. The product concept is designed to preserve conventional-watch styling and reduce screen dependence.

Functions to confirm on the exact watch

  • Step and activity tracking.
  • Heart-rate monitoring, if fitted to that variant.
  • Sleep, calorie or distance estimates, if supported.
  • Phone or watch finding.
  • Automatic time adjustment and firmware updates.
  • Basic notification signaling.

Capabilities you should not assume

  • Third-party apps, cellular service or voice assistance.
  • Onboard GPS or independent route recording.
  • Payments, music storage or playback control.
  • Emergency calling.
  • A large, always-available data display.
  • Comprehensive sport profiles and advanced training analytics.

Those omissions are not minor if you are comparing it with a current Apple Watch or Garmin. A hybrid watch can be useful precisely because it does less, but that also limits what it can replace.

Design and daily wear

The watch-first proposition is the strongest reason to consider the Sequent. An analog-looking case can work with formal clothing and avoids the conspicuous screen of a conventional smartwatch. It may also be more comfortable for someone who wants occasional connected cues rather than a wrist computer.

Because the accessible evidence does not verify the SuperCharger 2.3’s case size, thickness, lug-to-lug length, weight, crystal, strap width, finishes or water-resistance rating, inspect the actual unit rather than relying on photographs from another Elektron generation. Check hand alignment, daylight and low-light legibility, crown or button operation, strap condition and whether the charging mechanism produces a noise or balance that bothers you.

Sleep tracking also changes the practical verdict. A watch that is comfortable enough to wear overnight can collect more useful data; a heavy, noisy or poorly balanced example may spend the night on a dresser, reducing both tracking and kinetic input.

App, phone and service dependency

The companion app is as important as the hardware. Pairing, background permissions, account access, synchronization after the watch has been out of range and firmware delivery all determine whether the watch remains useful.

Current iPhone and Android requirements, the app’s present store availability, export to Apple Health, Google Health Connect or Strava, cloud dependence and firmware-server status were not verified for this exact model as of October 1, 2026. Treat that as a purchase condition, not a footnote.

Test before accepting a used watch

  1. Install the current Sequent app from the official iOS or Android store on your own phone.
  2. Pair the watch and confirm that the model is recognized, not merely a similarly named Elektron variant.
  3. Complete a manual sync and verify that new activity data appears in the app.
  4. Check whether firmware updating is offered and completes successfully.
  5. Disable and re-enable Bluetooth, then confirm the watch reconnects without an obsolete account or server error.

If the app has disappeared, cannot create an account or no longer syncs, the watch may still tell time but much of its advertised connected value is gone.

Health and fitness: feature presence is not accuracy

Any heart-rate, step, sleep, calorie or distance data should be treated as consumer wellness information. The available material contains no controlled comparison establishing medical or sports-grade accuracy.

Ask the seller or documentation whether heart rate is continuous, periodic or workout-only; whether sleep is automatic and detects naps; whether workouts are started manually; and whether GPS, if available, comes from the phone or the watch itself. Also determine whether metrics are visible on the watch or only after an app sync.

Expect occasional missed steps, implausible heart-rate spikes or sync gaps from any small hybrid platform. For serious training, route recording or medical decisions, use a device with documented capabilities and an active support ecosystem.

Battery and reliability expectations

Question What is established What to verify
Charging principle Marketed around self-charging or kinetic energy harvesting. Whether harvesting is kinetic-only and how much motion is required.
Real-world interval One Ricardo owner reported charging about every one to 1.5 months. Your expected interval when worn, removed overnight or left idle.
Battery service Not established from accessible documentation. Cell replacement process, parts, cost and authorized service.
Used-market evidence A Ricardo listing reported a CHF 200 sale for one example. Condition, included charger, warranty transfer and return rights; CHF 200 is not a standard current value.

A dead smart battery may leave a usable timepiece, but it defeats the product’s main convenience and can make repair uneconomic. Ask how long the watch holds charge when unworn and request a charging demonstration before payment.

Buying a used Sequent in 2026

  1. Confirm the exact “Elektron / SuperCharger 2.3” model and photograph the caseback, model number, box and charger.
  2. Pair it with your current phone and require a successful data sync.
  3. Ask how long it lasts off the wrist and whether the owner has needed increasingly frequent cable charging.
  4. Inspect crystal, case, crown, hands, strap, seals and any visible charging or rotor mechanism.
  5. Ask whether the case has been opened and whether water resistance was ever tested after service.
  6. Confirm the original charger or cable is included and available separately if not.
  7. Verify warranty duration, country coverage and transferability; a seller’s warranty claim does not establish coverage for you.
  8. Prefer a returnable transaction when app pairing, charging or firmware cannot be demonstrated.
  9. Do not pay a premium solely for the phrase “self-charging.”

The Ricardo listing shows that examples circulated second-hand in Switzerland and that at least one seller advertised remaining warranty. It does not establish United States availability, import costs, transferable coverage or a normal market price (listing; French listing).

Who should buy it?

Buyer priority Fit Reason
Analog styling and unusual engineering Good fit The kinetic hybrid concept is the point of the product.
Basic activity awareness with fewer screens Possible fit Useful if limited metrics and notifications are enough.
GPS, payments, apps and rich notifications Poor fit Those capabilities are not established and should not be assumed.
Long-term software and repair certainty Poor fit Current app, firmware and battery-service status remain unverified.

Buy only when the watch’s appearance and charging concept matter more to you than ecosystem depth. Avoid it if a failed app, aging battery or unavailable service would make the purchase unacceptable.

Final verdict

The Sequent Elektron / SuperCharger 2.3 is an interesting engineering project and a potentially elegant alternative to a screen-heavy smartwatch. Its self-charging system may stretch the time between cable sessions, but the available owner report shows why “never charge” is too strong a promise.

In 2026, the sensible verdict is conditional: buy a verified, returnable example only after testing pairing, synchronization and charge retention. If you want dependable software support, advanced fitness tools or a watch that behaves like a miniature smartphone, choose a mainstream smartwatch instead.
