At launch, yes: watchOS 11.3.1 was worth installing because it fixed an important Messages security vulnerability that Apple said may have been exploited in a sophisticated targeted attack.
Today, no—not specifically. As of August 18, 2026, install the newest watchOS version offered for your Apple Watch and paired iPhone. Apple’s watchOS 11 update history lists later releases, including watchOS 11.6.2, so there is generally no reason to hunt for the older 11.3.1 package.

The important security fix
The principal documented fix addressed a logic issue in Messages. A maliciously crafted photo or video shared through an iCloud Link could trigger the problem when processed by the device.
Apple identified the issue as CVE-2025-43200 and said it was aware of a report that the vulnerability may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals.

It does mean this was more consequential than a purely theoretical vulnerability. For a supported watch, avoiding the update solely because it added no visible features was difficult to justify when 11.3.1 was current.

What watchOS 11.3.1 did not add
- No new watch face was announced for 11.3.1.
- No new health metric or workout mode was announced.
- No battery-life improvement was promised.
- No performance or charging improvement was promised.
The Unity Rhythm watch face belongs to watchOS 11.3, the preceding feature and bug-fix release. It should not be attributed to watchOS 11.3.1.
Any change in battery life or responsiveness after installing 11.3.1 would be incidental or device-specific, not an announced benefit of the update.
Which Apple Watches support it?
Apple listed watchOS 11.3.1 for Apple Watch Series 6 and later, including compatible SE models and the Apple Watch Ultra family.
| Apple Watch | watchOS 11.3.1 eligibility |
|---|---|
| Series 6 and later | Yes, subject to the paired-iPhone requirement |
| Apple Watch Ultra and Ultra 2 | Yes |
| Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) | Yes |
| Series 5, Series 4, first-generation SE, and older | No |
watchOS 11 also requires an iPhone XS or later running iOS 18 or later. A compatible watch alone is not enough; an older iPhone may prevent the update.
Check Apple’s Apple Watch and iPhone compatibility guide before troubleshooting an update that does not appear.

Should you install it now?
If you were deciding on February 10, 2025
Yes. Install it once your watch and iPhone are ready. The security fix, combined with Apple’s warning about possible targeted exploitation, outweighed the temporary inconvenience of putting the watch on its charger.
If you are reading this in 2026
Do not specifically target watchOS 11.3.1. Open Software Update and install the newest compatible version Apple offers. Apple lists watchOS 11.6.2 as a later 11-series release with important bug fixes recommended for all users, but your watch may be offered a different version based on its model, paired iPhone, region, and installed software.
If your watch supports a newer major watchOS release and Apple offers it, follow the version shown on your device rather than stopping at 11.3.1.
If you are still running an older watchOS 11 release
Update rather than remaining on an old version. The normal Apple workflow presents the latest compatible release, not a catalogue of historical packages. There is generally no normal user-facing method for selecting watchOS 11.3.1 manually.
If you own an unsupported older watch
Do not try to install watchOS 11.3.1 on a Series 5, Series 4, first-generation SE, or older model. Those watches remain on older compatible watchOS branches.

How to update safely
Using the paired iPhone is usually the simplest method:
- Update the iPhone to the latest iOS version compatible with it.
- Open the Apple Watch app.
- Tap My Watch, then General.
- Tap Software Update.
- Download and install the newest version offered.
- Enter a passcode if requested.
- Keep the watch on its charger and the iPhone nearby until installation finishes.
Apple’s requirements include a watch with at least 50% charge, an iPhone connected to Wi-Fi, and the watch left on its charger during installation. Depending on the device and update, the process can take several minutes to an hour.
You can also update directly from the watch:
- Open Settings on the Apple Watch.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Tap Install if an update is available.
- Leave the watch on its charger until the process is complete.
Apple’s current Apple Watch update instructions cover both methods and the required conditions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When is it reasonable to delay?
A brief delay is sensible if you are about to start a workout or travel, need the watch immediately for an alarm, authentication, payments, or cellular service, or do not have enough battery or storage.
If you are particularly concerned about health and activity data, back up the paired iPhone before updating. These are reasons to delay briefly—not reasons to permanently skip a security update that Apple recommended for supported users.

Troubleshooting watchOS updates
The update will not install
- Confirm that the watch is connected correctly to its charger.
- Restart the Apple Watch.
- Restart the paired iPhone.
- Try the update again.
- In the Apple Watch app, open General → Storage.
- Delete the downloaded update file and retry.
No update appears
Check the watch model, iPhone model, iOS version, and whether the watch is already on a later release. Apple may be offering a newer major version instead of 11.3.1.
If beta software or a developer seed is installed, Apple says you may need to remove the beta profile, restart both devices, and check again. A missing update can also simply mean that the hardware or paired iPhone is not compatible.
A note for some U.S. Apple Watch owners
For U.S. Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2 models, later watchOS 11 updates changed the Blood Oxygen experience. Apple says watchOS 11.6.1 introduced measurements calculated on the iPhone and viewed in the Health app.

That change was not part of watchOS 11.3.1. It is another reason current users should install the latest compatible release rather than stop at the older security update. Feature availability can vary by model, country, region, and paired iPhone.
