Usually, no: you do not need to keep an unworn watch running. An automatic or hand-wound mechanical watch can stop when its stored power runs out, then be restarted when you wear it again. A winder is optional. Quartz watches continue using battery power while idle, so a depleted battery should not be left inside; solar watches need model-specific charging and storage care.
What happens when a watch sits unworn?

Is it okay to let an automatic watch stop?
Yes. Letting an automatic stop when its reserve runs out is a normal option, not a fault that by itself calls for service. NOMOS Glashütte says an automatic watch can wait a long time between wears without ill effects. When you want to wear it again, restart it gently using the method in its manual; Patek Philippe suggests a few gentle turns of the crown for its watches.
A stopped watch may need its time and calendar reset. That inconvenience matters more if your watch has a complicated calendar or other settings that take time to restore. The maker’s instructions should specify winding direction, crown position, and any model-specific precautions. Never force a crown against resistance.
Do you need a watch winder?
No. A winder is a convenience for keeping an automatic watch wound and ready, not a universal requirement. It may be worthwhile if you wear the watch frequently, dislike resetting it, or have a complication that is difficult to set. If you rarely wear it and do not mind resetting the time, letting it stop is a reasonable alternative.

Manufacturers’ recommendations are not identical: TAG Heuer recommends manual winding or a winder for its automatic-watch care context, while NOMOS says an automatic can wait between wears. Use the guidance for your own model, and if you choose a winder, confirm that its program suits that watch.
Should you pull out the crown to stop a watch?
Only if the manual for that specific model says to do so. Some watches permit a crown position that stops the movement, but crown behavior is not universal. Do not pull out the crown as a general way to save a quartz battery or stop a mechanical watch; use the model’s stated procedure instead.

How should you store a watch?
Use the original box or a similar protective case in a safe, ventilated place. Seiko recommends a dust-free, moderately dry location away from temperature extremes and magnetic sources, and specifically cautions against storing a watch beside a cell phone. Hermès also advises avoiding moisture, heat, and prolonged direct light. Keep separate watches from touching if they could scratch one another.
- Quartz: If the watch shows a low-battery or end-of-life indication, arrange replacement or service rather than leaving a dead cell inside. Hermès warns that a depleted battery left in place can leak and damage the movement.
- Solar: Check the exact manual before putting the watch away in darkness. Casio advises fully charging its solar watches and enabling power saving before dark storage; instructions vary by model.
- Mechanical: A stopped movement alone is not a reason to rush to service. Restart it as instructed and follow the manufacturer’s maintenance guidance.
Does keeping a mechanical watch running make it last longer?
The manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish that continuously running an unworn mechanical watch measurably improves its longevity compared with allowing it to stop. Choose based on convenience, complications, and your model’s instructions rather than assuming that a winder is required to protect the movement.

Service schedules also vary by maker and watch. Patek Philippe states an eight-to-ten-year interval for quartz and mechanical watches; Hermès gives three years for mechanical and five years for quartz models; TAG Heuer’s 2024 magazine article gives five to seven years for the mechanical watches it covers. These are brand-specific recommendations, not a universal schedule. Follow the manual or authorized service guidance for your watch.
